Morning folks! Here is a new one from us:

Train, Train (YouTube Video)

Train, Train (audio link)

The train picture was taken by Marty Straub.

The Band:

~674:Organ, B3, Background Blues Roadhouse Ev 120
4249:Guitar, Electric, Rhythm BluesFunky Ev 120
(I used both the regular a held chords versions of the two realtracks)

Drums and Percussion: EZDrummer3

Marty Straub (BabuMusic): Bass Guitar
Chris Spruit: Vocals
I played guitar and also sang.

Mixed in Reaper, mastered with Ozone10.

Train, Train (2023, Dave Bell and Chris Spruit)

1)When times are tough, and you're feeling blue
Gotta find a train, you know what to do
Gonna hitch a ride, on that iron track,
One thing I know, I ain't going back

Chorus)
Train, train, rollin' down the line
Gonna ride that train, 'till I see a sign

2)My baby left me, for someone new
I see the steam clouds coming, cold and blue
Heard the whistle blow, right on time
Gonna leave this town, far behind.

3)Fold up the blanket,  my time to roll
All the bills are paid to free my soul
This train's coming, and I'm out the door
Ain't gonna stay here anymore

All comments welcome!

Dave, Chris & Marty,

What a great song! Love the opening. Also, love the combination of your voice Dave with Chris - really great stuff.

Marty holds the groove together with that great bass sound and Dave's guitar is on fire.

The whole production sounds pro and radio ready. Excellent!

BA,

Terrific opening! The funky guitar rhythm, the drums (cool choice) and That Bass! Then Dave's guitar...
Not a fan of "twin leads" - they sound so dated now. But This is something else. More a guitar-and-a-harmony-guitar ("twin leads" seldom sound like that). Exquisite!!! Kudos.
Glad that when the main solo happened that it was, indeed, solo. (no good-thing-too-far here...)

Holy Moly! COOL Vocals! An amazing combination. Yes, Holy Moly!

Well written.

The Mix is Velvet.

WOW.

Howdy collaborators....

I'm diggin' this one.
Great BGV's and arrangement.
Cool....I'm not the only one who writes beyond 4:00 smile

Very well written & recorded....enjoyed the listen.

(I have (2) song topics to get busy on but I've been in a creative slump lately.
I'm second guessing their potential musical merit before I've even written them! :))

Carry on....

Rocking intro! Doubled lead, doubled vocals - cool sound!

And it's blues! laugh
Posted By: firesong Re: Train, Train - 07/29/23 03:43 PM
Hey Blue Attitude...man this is crazy good! Dave the intro is a song in itself...it's such a great groove...love the harmony guitar stuff...you and Chris sound great together...Marty is transparent and right on as usual...I always love the tone of your guitar and just the all round pro quality of your writing and recording...5 stars from me!

The intro sizzles!

Slinky, slick sound.

Vocals are blended well (two by Chris and one by you?)

Guitar solo is on fire too.

Give the bass player a raise. grin
Posted By: Guitarhacker Re: Train, Train - 07/29/23 08:41 PM
Cool one.... First thought>>>> Blackfoot... but nope.

Kinda bluesy...

I enjoyed it. Nice guitar work.
Posted By: rayc Re: Train, Train - 07/30/23 12:26 AM
Everything about this sizzles.
The guitar intro is amazing as are Marty's pick up notes to kick in.
Fab mix, fab performances. I really like the harmony work between Dave & Christine.
The rhythm guitar "solo" from 2.35 seemed like a missed opportunity though. Not so much what was played but the tone/sound.
One little nit but of no real consequence as the whole package is a blast.

Hello Chris, Dave and Marty
Extremely good song
Sounds great
Vocals, BGV's, bass all very good
But Dave's guitar work makes this song so great
A very impressive performance Dave
Really a great collaboration from all involved
Many greetings
Andi ;-)

Dave,

Truly excellent. Possibly the best treatment of your vocals I've heard (lovely work by Chris in support).
Marty holds it together well, and the guitar work is very nice nice indeed.

The only thing missing is a 3 minute twin guitar outro....

It was Chris's idea to do a duet, my original plan was that she do the main vocal.

Thanks, Bob!

Originally I only had one guitar playing the intro part, but then I happened to catch an old Allman Brothers concert on YouTube and thought it might be fun to try a twin lead thing, it's something I've never done before. And I developed the second guitar part by thinking of it as a vocal harmony.

And then I ran it by Chris and Marty to make sure it didn't sound too cheesy, 'cause you are right, the twin lead thing has been done to death wink

Hi BlueAttitude,

Nice musical construction. The lead guitar is nice. The set pleases. Could the ending be abrupt?

Well done

When I see a song by BlueAttitude know it is going to be a great one.
And this is a great one.
As usual everything is top shelf and perfect.
Loved that rhythm guitar part and the double leads.
You all are fantastic musicians and composers.

Loved it.

I can relate to having half written songs, I've got lots of those! Mostly because I almost always have problems coming up with lyrics. This one sat on the half finished pile for ages too until I came up with the idea of the train. And even then I could only manage one verse and the chorus, Chris knocked out the other two verses in a couple of hours wink

Thanks for checking out the song!

First of all thank you to anyone who thinks the bass helped this song. The BiaB guy usually does a much better job, so thank you, Dave, for your confidence and friendship. Dave, many have already mentioned your vocal, and I want to pile on. Man, I always like the songs you sing --partially because they are so good, but also because your vocals are really quite engaging and add a special twist to songs. On this one you are soaring to new heights. I also applaud Chris for encouraging you to bring it all out. You guys sound great together. Let's get some of those stalled tracks off your shelf. Lyrics come easier to good songs.

Like the groove, it really captures the train feel. Its jazzy, and rockish, and smooth. Excellent guitar work and tone. The bass is cooking!!!

Very kind, Dan, thanks!

Well for starters we have listened to the Allman Bros since their beginnings thru their final concert.
Bud saw them live in a park in 1969 when they were unknown.

All meaning we can deeply appreciate harmony and counter point twin leads.
We've never tired of them smile and you captured it well!

All of your and Chris' vocal ins and outs work very well.
Good to hear your vocal out front.

Excellent support from that bass guy.

Great pop with that snare within an overall fine mix.

Well done and fun to listen to (and watch)!

J&B

PS: A bit off topic but we being deep south folks have always been amused when the ABB are referred to as "southern rock." Polyrhythms, Jaimoe's jazzy drums mixed with Butch's rock drums, foundations of later blues rock, jazz rock fusion, melodic bass players, Gregg's just right amount of tasty B3 ... they did it all.

Hey Scott,

Chris actually sent me three tracks, but the high harmony only comes in at key spots. Thanks!

Hi Ray,

Yeah, I got lazy and used the BIAB dude for that part. I would have played the same thing, but the tone of course would have been different.

Thanks!

Yeah this deserves all the accolades.

Nice piece of work everyone!

This one really cooks!

Dave have you seen the new weird purple devil star thing on your Reverb page and the website icon?

Do you also feel it is ugly and obnoxious??

Hi Peter,

Having Chris do the unison vocal, which was her idea, kicked up the vocal quite a bit; my vocal by itself is nothing to write home about eek

Thanks for the listen and comments!

Dave and team,

A killer track for sure! Dave your work with the Toontrack drums always sounds fabulous! Those Realtracks you used were excellent choices especially the guitar. I don't remember hearing you do a twin lead section before but you nailed it! Chris is a super vocalist and what a luxury it is to have her available for backup vox! It's easy to expect a solid bass performance on your tracks with Marty laying it down and he did not disappoint on this! Another wonderful job of guitar solo work and vocals Dave!

Thanks, TB

Very cool that you saw them in '69, Bud, that would have been the original lineup with Duane. I wore the grooves off the Live at the Fillmore Album back when I first got it, stole a few licks too wink

And yeah, I never thought of them as being part of the Southern Rock scene either.

Thanks for checking out the song and the video, very much appreciated!

Yes, I've seen the new RN logo. Not a fan either. Thanks for checking out the song, David!

Funnily, although totally different, the start of the intro reminded me of another song, and it turned out to be Long Train Runnin', so you really know how to get the train going smile Superb guitar playing later in the intro. I felt also The Robert Cray Band mood, so you are really playing in the top league now.

Good upbeat message, "Fold up the blanket, my time to roll/All the bills are paid to free my soul". Marty's bass and the vocal duet work splendidly, I can only admire your virtuosity, I wish that train would take you on a world tour.

Chris, Marty, & Dave ...

What a great song! Watched and listen to the video - nice!

Everyone before me has pretty much said what I was thinking as I listened. The guitar smokes, the bass drives, and the vocals bring it all to life. This is one of the best-written, arranged, and produced songs I've heard on the forum in quite some time. There wasn't even a second that didn't capture my attention and made me so appreciative of the richness and grandeur of this song. WOW!!! sums it up for me!

Excellent in every way!

Hi Janne,

Big Robert Cray fan here. The band I was in in the early 90's covered a lot of his songs. The line you quoted was written by Chris, probably my favorite too.

Thanks very much for the kind words, happy you liked this one smile

Blue Attitude team,
Your best tune of 2023 to my taste. Very seasoned, yet doesn't have boring commercial feel. A very strong collaboration. Excellent blend of Chris + Dave voices, fantastic instrumentation by you and Marty and programming skills.
Love the lead guitar section at 1:36. Mixed very professionally. Really cool tune (and video) Thank you for sharing.
