I seem to remember feeling something like this once.

https://soundcloud.com/tuigorge/god-bless

Real Drums - Nashville shuffle
Bass = RT 539 Pop Sw
Guitar - RT 974 country Swing

Criticism most welcome!

God Bless

God bless every-body God bless every-thing
God bless all the insects and the little birds that sing
God bless all the animals God bless all the fish
God bless the mushy cabbage thats floating in my dish

May God bless Mum and Dad well Mum any-way
God bless all the little kids who turn to him each day
God bless all the family God bless Sister Sue
God bless all the many things that leave me black and blue

God bless Betty Robinson who teaches me in school
Won't let me write with my left hand she's a god damn fool
Ate her apples yester-day Dad gave me a whoppin
Just like him and her on the inside they were rotten

God bless every-body God bless every-thing
God bless all the insects and the little birds that sing
God bless all the animals God bless all the fish
God bless the mushy cabbage thats floating in my dish

God bless all the older kids who won't let me play
And the stupid mongrels that beat me up each day
There'll come a time things will change there'll be a tale to tell
With bitten tongues and bleeding gums I'll see them all in hell

God bless every-body God bless every-thing
God bless all the uni-verse and all the stars that sing
May God bless all cre-ation and bless himself with joy
God Bless me too cause I'm off to sleep and I'm just a little boy

God bless every-body God bless every-thing
God bless all the uni-verse and all the stars that sing
May God bless all cre-ation and bless himself with joy
God Bless me too cause I'm off to sleep and I'm just a little boy

Growing up is good fun init!?!

Quote:
Won't let me write with my left hand
Yeh that was me too. Miss Davies was the old bat. I put up-turned drawing pins on her seat and they were stuck in her bottom all day but seemingly caused no pain, which confused me a lot.

Enjoyed the memories evoked by that song!!!

Richard,

well done. you have developed a signature sound - clean and simple - and it works well for your lyrics and vocals...

your lyrics really have a way of making people think about things that they might otherwise not pay attention to... and often with a good deal of humor mixed in...

enjoyed.

Now that was fun! I went throught
the lefty thing also. My dad went to
the school and straightened them out.

Clever write and just what you needed
to support it.

Fun!

Thanks Alyn for making my day with Miss Davies and the drawing pins!
Have been giggling on and off all day. Cheers.

Thanks Rob. These half remembered images keep coming to me. Cheers.

Hi Floyd. Thanks for your support. The bass guitar drums arrangements seem all i can handle at present with out muddying things up. Am trying to be more simple and direct with lyrics too. Had a great comment from a FAWMer whose songs I admire that the imagery for one song was a bit much to process and there was enough material there for 5 songs. Am still thinking about that. Cheers

Thank you Guenter. Glad you enjoyed a bit of fun. Cheers.

Thanks Janice and Bud. I am surprised to find that others were forced to change from the left hand also.
My teacher also boarded with us (little country school) so I had no choice but to change and now write like a spider. But on the positive side am somewhat ambidextrous. Good on your Dad! Cheers.

Richard, I enjoyed this fun look at your childhood. There is always a lot to think about in your story songs. The simple arrangement works well. Tom

Fun song!! Nice sentiment, and delicious humor. I never thought I'd hear God bless and God damn in the same song. This is my new favorite of yours!! Take care. Greg

Hi Rich,

As Floyd said, you really do have a way with your lyrics to make interesting and thought provoking observations with a humorous spin.

I thought the following lines were great:

Quote:
God bless the mushy cabbage thats floating in my dish

ha ha .. typical little boy attempt to put a positive spin on a distasteful situation

Quote:
God bless Mum and Dad well Mum any-way

another classic little boy trait: first, say what people expect you to say... then revise it into what you really think...

Quote:
God bless all the many things that leave me black and blue

proof of a kid whose parents tried to arm him with an attitude that can see usefulness in tribulation...

Quote:
God bless Betty Robinson who teaches me in school
Won't let me write with my left hand she's a god damn fool
Ate her apples yester-day Dad gave me a whoppin
Just like him and her on the inside they were rotten

VERY interesting metaphor, and you got the idea across in just a few words!

Quote:
God bless all the older kids who won't let me play
And the stupid mongrels that beat me up each day
There'll come a time things will change there'll be a tale to tell
With bitten tongues and bleeding gums I'll see them all in hell

again, typical of a little boy to start with the expected blessing for those who abuse him, then follow up with what he really thinks

Quote:
God bless every-body God bless every-thing
God bless all the uni-verse and all the stars that sing
May God bless all cre-ation and bless himself with joy
God Bless me too cause I'm off to sleep and I'm just a little boy

I'm glad you included this bit of key information because without identifying the fact that the singer is a little boy, much of the meaning you crafted into the lyrics would be lost or at least, not as easily understood

All the song writers on the forum have their own unique strengths... I think your strength lies in your ability to write lyrics that tell an interesting, profound and amusing story. Good job!

Thanks Tom I'm glad you enjoyed it! Cheers.

Thanks Greg. The boy is confused. Cheers.

Thanks Pat. I find your observations quite amazing. Very close to the story.
It's about a confused little boy trying hard to do what's right or at least what's expected of him.
But resentment and rage are building up. Will post a companion song "Not without a fight" when it's been reworked and tidied up. Cheers.

I liked this one. The simple arrangement works here, putting focus on the story.

Richard,

I agree with Tom. Under the funny blanket there is a sharp critisism to what your world used to be. You may have grown old to fast, the child is not lost smile smile

I do love your signature style. I enjoyed following your song, reading the lyrics.

Thanks Rich, I loved it!

Hi Rich,

another funny one! You're definitely developing a signature sound (like Floyd already said).

Thanks Charlie. Am trying hard to keep the backings simple.
It's so easy to add more RT's (and tempting). Cheers.

Hey there Fred. Am surprised to find I am developing a style.
Suppose it's inevitable to a point. Glad you enjoyed it. Cheers.

Hi Lawrence. I like to recall the joy of childhood.
Basically had a hell of a lot of fun and got in loads of trouble.
Some things don't change. Cheers.

Thanks Rob and Anne-Marie. I suppose it's a good thing to develop a sound.
I do worry about repeating myself with only minor variations between songs though.
Ah well. Write fearlessly and just let it flow I guess. Cheers.

Hi Floyd. ETA here in 2 days. Not good in Vanuatu.
The storm center this morning was 899hpa. Very low!
We will certainly be keeping an eye on the weather.
