So for this one, I did something different. I plugged an acoustic in to Real Band and just sang whatever came into my head on the first take. I gave absolutely no thought to it. Just having fun. Then I went back and added all the other stuff and then typed up what I had sung.

Raw and undiluted and mostly live off the top of my head for better or worse. This is very close to the "live" sound I had in one of my first bands. Rough around the edges, but hey, why not.

Closing Time

By David Snyder

V1

I like you in that white dress
The one from the Civil War
It seems we’re living backwards
And ghosts come through these doors
I may have lost my mind
Cause I don’t know where I am
But to be completely honestly
I do not give a damn

V2

Been reading Dylan Thomas
and I just might change my name
If I’m not tangled up in blue
I’ll come in like a Hurricane
I was born on Ellis Island
In the early morning rain
My guitar is built with coffin nails
And I’ll sing anything

CH 1

So tell me
Is everybody fine
Go ahead and be honest
Is it closing time

V3

Push the boat into the water
Push away from the shore
We’ll sail to any place you like
I can’t take it here no more
Are we dying out
Have we reached the end
Who do I confess to
Have we really sinned

CH 2

Am I staring at the ceiling
Or am I looking at the floor
You know I have this feeling
Don’t want to live round here no more
So tell me
Is everybody fine
Go ahead and be honest
Is it closing time

So tell me
Does this really need to rhyme
Go ahead and be honest
Is it closing time

V4

I like you in that white dress
the one from the Civil War
It seems we’re living backwards
And ghosts come through these doors
I may have lost my mind
Cause I don’t know where I am
To be completely honestly
I just don't give a damn

CH

So tell me
Is everybody fine
Please be honest
Is it closing time

David,
Nice freestylo!
I like perspective of: "Does this really need to rhyme?"
A nice continuation in tradition of mr.B.D.
Clear, open mix. I wish harmonica be a little louder in the middle.

Misha.

Ah, you are capturing the essence of the procedures many FAWMers use to create their 14 or more songs in 28 days...
Just plug in a microphone & go for it...
After the "February Album Writing Month" is over, you end up with a bunch of songs you can either throw away or refine...

David, I think "Closing Time" is definitely a keeper you can refine for a future release...
And I bet you had fun recording it! smile

The experiment is a success.

Why not indeed!

It's amazing to me that you can come up with lyrics like this right off the top of your head.

Could have been on the Blonde on Blonde album.

Good stuff, David, I like the energy and feel of this track.

We certainly agree with the Blonde on Blonde comment...like a lost track from the session.

It has a cool mystique that's enhanced by the poetic (but overly so) lyric and the engaging vocal and band.

Well done Mr Snyder!

Impressive,

doesn't matter how it came to be

it's entertaining, it flows

it's David Snyder

expressing his apocalyptic optimism

with a signature cool

Wherever this came from...keep doing it! This is superb. Both the song and the production, vocal and mix...

I don't think more needs to said than that.

Reminds me of Bob Dylan. So cool that you can do this off the fly. Love it!!!

Mr. Dylan ..oh..sorry.. David Snyder,

This is just an excellent song. If this is just an experiment, I think you have set a very high standard for your future releases. Looking forward to that! smile

Thank you for sharing!

Gotta love those experiments that seem to work.

And this one did.

David,

As others have said, this is an experiment that definitely paid off. I found it very engaging to listen to.

All the best,
Noel

I am amazed at all the lyrical nuggets in this song, especially since you sang whatever came to your head. Besides the aforementioned Dylan, I think it's a bit like Rodriguez. Good stuff, Maynard!

Thanks Misha! Yeah, I was freestyling for sure!

Let me know if I can come for a visit and bust one old school over there.

David, you have got to be joking us! If you can throw that together off the cuff you have got some serious creative skills on display! I respect and appreciate your talent man!! Thanks, Torrey

David,

This has a great "top of mind" feel...

Could be a lost song from the Basement Tapes. Excellent instrumentation and mix as well.

Loved it!

Very cool David. Kind of like scatting with real words. Love your creativity David. This is an excellent tune. Well done

David, Wow, right off the top of your head with this song - I think Dylan himself would be impressed. Great sounding mix. Whatever you're using on your vocal chain these days I'm impressed,

Very cool David!! There is some abstractness but it really holds together well. Many of my favorite songs are pretty abstract. I frequently get the catalyst for a song by singing stream of consciousness but I only get a little piece and have to fill it out with a good deal of effort. You have put together something really cool here in one artistic purge!! Great stuff!! Take care. Greg

Thanks Jim!

I have heard a lot about FAWM.

I have a couple of expressions that are the center of my life.

1.) Every day is Christmas.

2.) Every month is FAWM.

Incredible! If this was just a thrown together experiment, just having fun - you need to throw together some more lyrics like this and have some more fun! I like everything about this one. The backing is perfect for your "experiment".

It is definitely closing time. But your should definitely keep opening up like this!
