https://soundcloud.com/torrey-bliss/roll-with-itI have always had a special affinity the R&B/Soul sound and it influences a lot of my music. I relied heavily on the band for this one! I wanted to go back and do something in this vein with this one. She (my wife) has put up with me for 40 years and this one's for her. I don't usually post tunes but about once a month or so but this one came to me in a days time and I quickly put it together before I forgot everything LOL!! Hope someone enjoys it!

Roll With It
Words and music by
Torrey Bliss copyright 2019
I've got a will
She's got her way
And I know where we'll be
At the end of the day
She'll never lose
But she'll never win
Each day we get up
And start it over again
Oh I know that I could just walk away
But together on this road we will stay
I'm gonna roll with it baby
I know that we'll make it
Our love is getting stronger each day
I'm gonna roll with it baby
Wherever life will take us
I'm gonna be there with you
She picks me up
Then brings me down
One moment she'll laugh
Then won't make a sound
I'll spend my life
Trying to figure out
Just what makes her tick
Just what she's all about
Oh I know I couldn't make it alone
But together we'll just keep movin' on
I'm gonna roll with it baby
I know that we'll make it
Our love is getting stronger each day
I'm gonna roll with it baby
Wherever life will take us
I'm gonna be there with you
Your vocal is most excellent. You hit the 70s groove right on the nail. Your guitar sounds so good that it's good enough (or better)to be a BIAB track.
Torrey,
An irresistable groove you`ve got going on this -you really sound like you`re on a high with this music- vocals, guitar ( the lead section with horns is sublme!) and arrangement all so on the money for the genre.
(Not sure if its even worth mentioning- there`s a touch of harshness I hear on `phones on the esses).
This had me rolling along from the opening drum beats - very well done!
Robert
I love the lyrics and your arrangement. Top notch track! Really enjoyed listening to this!
Will
Torrey,
There is a WHOLE BUNCH to LOVE about this.
It has a SUPER overall "catchy". Like how Robee Dupree's "Steal Away" is so very catchy. (An all-time favorite).
A truly AWESOME melody. What Pop music is ALL ABOUT!!!
The bass is OUTRAGEOUSLY good!
The funky crisp guitars are perfect. Horns to die for. Tasty lead guitar.
Drums are terrific. Awesome harmonies.
This is top-shelf, pro quality music making.
One "nit". The vocal (which is OUTSTANDING!!!!) needs some "warmth" to it. It has a high-EQ crispness that "takes it out of the mix". Maybe rolling off the high end or adding some middle??
THIS is SO damn good!!! Loved it. Best POP song ever on the forums. A hit.
Impressed.
fj
Had me envisioning Don Henley Live From Darryl's House!
Awesome groove, stellar vocals and guitar picking.
Great job!
Rick
Wow, Torrey. I was hooked before the end of the second bar and it just kept getting better. So many elements of this production resonated with me. I'm on my third listen right now and the only part that didn't sound quite as 'real' as the rest was the horns. It's not a big detractor and there may not be much you can do about that anyway. Thanks for brightening up my afternoon.
Torrey,
Pretty sound you have going on here . . . a bit of Steely Dan here . . . catchy hook and sweet vocal—sits perfectly crisp in the mix. Very chill tune—impressive!
All my best,
Deej
Torrey
Some superb writing and performing. Top notch in all aspects and beautifully crafted.
A real winner.
Peter
Torrey,
at 1.44 there's a strange click - it may be in the RTs or something in production but you might like to reduce it if possible.
This arrangement and mix is SPOT ON.
I can easily picture this as the soundtrack to a music video very easily - you've the sound covered with the RTs and your own instrumentation.
The vocal is the icing, I don't hear the lack of warmth fj mentioned but I did note is was crisp on top which popped a couple of sibilant syllables higher than needed.
LOVELY stuff as always.
... I don't hear the lack of warmth fj mentioned but I did note is was crisp on top which popped a couple of sibilant syllables higher than needed.
To be clear... "warmth" is perhaps the wrong word. In no way meant to define the PERFORMANCE (which is terrific), but the overall "EQ-ness". Just a bit "too crisp" (I think) - some "roundness"? needed?? ...hard to describe it... and just "a bit". It is SUCH an excellent piece of work...
Hi Torrey,
Man, you are on a roll! (see what I did there?
) Two great songs within weeks of each other.
This is as good as it gets, just top notch and totally professional.
Great vocal, and man, I love your jazzy guitar style.
Mix sounds great to me.
I think I hear what Ray mentioned, missed it the first time but went back and specifically listened after I read his comment. Around 1:40 I think. And might be coming from the vocal track?
Loved this one, Torrey, hearing material like this makes me strive to do better with my own productions.
Love it Torrey.
Great anthem for marriage
Thanks Scott! I always appreciate your positive supportive comments! T
Thanks Robert! You are such a valuable member of this forum with not only your work that you present but also the input and encouragement you give others on their work! Thanks, for the listen and comments! I sort of rushed putting this one up and missed some things that others like Floyd and Ray along with yourself mentioned regarding EQ, sibilant noise etc. I inadvertently applied the wrong vocal effects chain to my lead vocal and didn't realize it at first. It's close to the one I usually use but a little thinner sound! I have since replaced and edited out several clicks, pops, smacks etc. Hopefully it's a little less distracting now! T
Hi Torrey
I'm also a big soul/R&B fan. This is excellent. Love your vocal and guitar work.
Regards,
Leon
The lyrics are simple but oh-so-sweet! I hope your wife loves it
Blue eyed soul!!! I LOVE this Torrey! One of my all time fav genres and you NAILED it brother. Great groovin arrangement with Horns oh yeah. Love the vocals/lyrics too. Terrific song and track for my taste. Oh and extra cool you wrote it for your wife!
Hi Torrey,
this one is not just good - it's top notch in all respects. Not the first of your songs I consider to have absolute radio quality, but this one is outstanding.
That's the kind of music I almost adore anyway, and the way you pleased my ears (and toes) was just grand.
A classic compact (in the best possible sense) driving yet smooth composition - that's what I'd call 'the art of song writing.
Very nice lyrics (I'm sure you'll get double Christmas presents from your wife this year
), extremely well-sung and perfectly arranged and produced.
A perfect sunday morning treat - thanks a lot for sharing.
All the best,
Stefan
Edit: Just called Maha to have a listen: She LOVED it, too !!!
Well I certainly did...
It the kind of song I would expect to hear on KNON's morning show...
Very nicely done!
Torrey, you nailed the R&B/Soul genre! Everything about this fits perfectly with that genre. Your vocal was great, your arrangement was great, your mix was great, and your lyrics were super. I am a big fan of your guitar chops!
PS, loved those horns also!
Outstanding! A lot of people try this genre but don't have the success you have here. Almost missed this, I discovered it as the followup tune on Soundcloud to a different tune from the showcase. Glad I caught it, you have a real winner here!!
Thanks Will for having a listen and commenting! I appreciate it! T
Thanks Floyd for all the positive feedback! I really appreciate that you have taken the time to listen and comment! I have tried to address some of the eq issues you mentioned as I said in my reply to Robert. It's funny how an effects chain can sound different from song to song. Plus I also increased the tempo 3 bpm to give it a little more snap. T
Thanks Rick! I really appreciate you taking time to listen and comment! T
Thanks Ghostgum! I appreciate the listen and comment! I don't think I'm quite done working with the horns in this one yet! I will probably be editing out a few places where they and the guitar are stepping on each others toes. T
Thanks Deej! I really appreciate your positive comments! T
Usually, I try to work through forum songs on a top-down basis.
But when I saw there was a Torrey Bliss song, I cheated and skipped a few to get to it early.
As usual, it doesn't disappoint!
First of all, it's got that
tone of a '70s classic.
Then there's the catchy-as-hell chorus, and an excellent enthusiastic vocal driving it.
Horns sit where they should, bass is fun... Everything just comes together and works.
Most importantly, the song sticks with me after the song's done, and makes me want to play it again.
I really enjoyed the combination of instruments in this song, and I feel they worked really well together! Awesome job.
Listening and commenting again just cuz it's so good! Cracked my top five for the year, will be playing this one a lot!
Thanks Peter! Your comments mean a lot to me! T
Thanks Ray for taking time to notice the small details! I had planned already to address some of that extraneous noise and knew (lol) you would catch it! I appreciate all your contributions to the forum! T
You have amazing ability to create catchy pop songs which sound strangely familiar but are still original in your own unique style. Well done with this one also, positive sound and story with perfect band, excellent vocals and very balanced mix.
Janne

Thanks Dave! I was wondering when a pun or two would arrive on this one! I still have work to do on this track with editing and re-recording a couple of flat places in the lead and background vocals as well as possibly re-record the guitar solo but it's getting closer! Thanks so much for your continual positivity and support! I appreciate it! T
Oh wow Torrey! Very enjoyable and foot tapping tune.
Mike B.
Outstanding, Torrey! Nice BIAB backing tracks. Your vocals (the lead as well as the sweet backing vox) and guitar playing are superb. Nice tribute to the love of your life. Bravo!
Well, we certainly enjoyed rolling with it!
Steely Dan came to Janice's mind...she paid more attention to them than Bud
Oh yeah, a little Doobie Bros also but ultimately it's Torrey goodness.
70's music was all over the map with multiple genres emerging and a few disappearing but
this tune is a great example of the best of the period.
Your guitar ALWAYS so well supports your melodies and arrangement. Just where it should be
and never obtrusive.
And what a tribute to your relationship with that positive and well done write. Right in our wheelhouse
Vocals are outstanding. Extremely well performed and sitting perfectly in the mix.
Great!

Another great song Torrey!!! Has that 80's vibe that I dig....some Hall and Oates, Ambrosia, Kenny Loggins, etc... Really well done in every way.....a pleasure to listen to!! Take care. Greg
Thanks so much Marty for listening and commenting on my tune! I appreciate it! T
Outstanding, Torrey! I always enjoy your work. Great arrangement. I agree with Floyd. The vocal could use just a tad warmth to sit just a little better in the mix in my opinion. Great job on this one!
Steve
What a wonderfully sophisticated audio track, Torrey. Seems there is no challenge you are not equal to.

great production love the mix and super vocal awesome and great guitar chops to thanks eric
I saw one other person mention Don Henley..... My immediate thought was this is classic Eagles, oh yeah....and with Timothy B Schmidt on the vox....
Excellent job.
You're one of my favorite vocalists and songwriters here on the forum and I always look forward to your posts. This is no exception and the song falls right into the wheelhouse of one of my favorite genres of music. Truly enjoyed this one. I shared the SC link on my FB page so all my friends can hear this one.
Thanks for the kind words Janne! It means a lot to me! T

Thanks Marc! I appreciate all that! T
When I saw the title I immediately thought of Steve Winwood...
but the actual song was reminiscent of Hall & Oates and even Steely Dan in places.
But at the end it is all Torrey Bliss! Good job on this crazy catchy tune!
Thank you J&B! I soak up everything you say and greatly appreciate it! Thanks, Torrey
