LYRICS:

"One Friend"

Well I've been on the road for a year so
got a heavy load that don't get any lighter, oh no
Whether slow or fast, can't escape my past
It's overcast and it don't get any brighter, don't you know?

Tried all kinds of pills to cure my ills
But nothing fills the aching void within me, oh no
In honky-tonks and bars, I must have downed a thousand jars
but the inner scars refuse to go away

But there's one friend I know will never judge me
When I'm feeling low, he'll come up close and nudge me
And should I wake in fright at the terrors of the night
Well he just lets me know he's there and it's all right

Well, about last May, on a cold wet, day
This ragged stray decided he'd adopt me, oh yeah
Wouldn't go away, so I let him stay
He's with me ev'ry day and I guess that he's an answer to my prayer

There were things that I saw in that crazy war
On a foreign shore, that are really best forgotten, oh yeah
But it's etched too deep, steals my sleep,
At times it causes me to weep and think life is so unfair

But there's one friend I know will never judge me
When I'm feeling low, he'll come up close and nudge me
And should I wake in fright at the terrors of the night
He just lets me know he's there and it's all right
He just lets me know he's there and it's all right

Hi Brian.
There are a lot of great songs being posted at the moment. This is one of them.
Loved the lyrics and the song.

A sweet song, and a really, really nice delivery!!! Love the clever rhyming which is done so apparently effortlessly. This is my fave of yours to date!! You have such a natural delivery in this song. AWESOME!!! Take care. Greg

Thanks, Gary. When I was putting the backing together I knew it was going to be a song about a dog - but the words (cunning devils!) evaded me. So I carried on and worked out a melody I could use as an instrumental. It was week or more before the story began to take shape, by which time I had rearranged the musical structure, moved the key from C to Eb, and upped the tempo from 75 to 83 bpm. Glad you liked it.

Thanks, Greg. Glad you liked it. Originally, I was aiming at a standard rhyme structure = end of paired lines, all the way through. It wasn't until I had played the backing for the hundredth time (or so) that the phrase-by-phrase rhyming took charge.

Well written and performed.
An interesting cadence.

Reminiscent of Steve Goodman.
That's a good thing.

Thanks, moto. I'm not familiar with Steve Goodman. Will have to look him up ☺

This has the vibe of a classic '70s song played a thousand times over.

Love the arrangement, and the mix. The harmonica works ridiculously well.

As Greg said, excellent vocal delivery.

Your clever rhyming stands out and does not seem forced at all. Well done!

Yes, definitely a 70s feel, and that only added to my enjoyment of your song.
