The Songs of Yesterday

I've bad the basic bed for this one for quite a while now and decided to do something with it a couple of weeks ago. I came up with the melody and the line "I long for the songs of yesterday" and then got totally stuck. Tried many different approaches and none of them worked.

I asked Marty if he would give me a hand, and he came up with three verses (in less than an hour!). I then went back and wrote a chorus for it. Thanks, Marty! wink

EDIT: Marty says we should have a name that tune contest. I hint at a "song of yesterday" at the start of the guitar solo, and Marty does the same with his outro bass part.

EDIT2: Uploaded a new mix with suggestions from David Cuny, thanks, David!

The Band:

Marty Straub, aka BabuMusic: Bass guitar and harmonies

The Songs of Yesterday - 2021, Marty Straub (75%) & Dave Bell

1)When I am driving all alone.
Winding my way back to our home, I think of you.
Turn on the radio, our favorite song will play,
and I long for the songs of yesterday.

2)There's still a long road yet to ride,
and all of our songs will be our guide.
Play 'em loud. Sunshine and rain will fall and yet our love will stay
Playing the songs of yesterday

Chorus:

The songs of yesterday remind me of the times we've had,
and all the adventures we have known.
The good and bad, the ups and downs, the music's playing all around,
All the songs of yesterday

3)As I come pulling in our drive
feeling so blessed to be alive, there you are.
Reminding me of times and tunes, and why I feel this way.
That's why I long for the songs of yesterday

All comments welcome!

You're welcome, Dave. Thank you for asking. Hey, my favorite part is the line you wrote. Can't get this outta my head: "I long for the songs of yesterday." Wonder if anyone can name the song your reference in the beginning of your solo, or the oldie I stick in the fade.

Dave and Marty, I sure enjoy hearing Dave stretch out a bit and step up to the mike. Sounds great! The guitar work and bass playing is excellent as usual. I knew the guitar lick at the beginning of the solo before I read the pop quiz remark. Dave- you're an Animal! Good write and a great hook. Nice mix and thoroughly enjoyed, Tom PS, check out Robben Ford's version of the referenced song. Sorry Marty, I didn't get the bass reference. I'll settle for a 500 batting average.

Love the vibe of the song, and mix, although (my opinion), I think the vocals could stand to come up some. I really loved the guitar solo!!

Dave & Marty,
A good song for a road trip...strong melody and well written rearview mirror lyrics.
The way the guitar solo tingles my cranium, I`m thinking Hendrix; sorry, no entry from me on the outro reference.
The title is fine btw.

Dave & Marty,
Nice team work! Love chord progression. I know... It sounds like something very familiar... Can't guess it. Perfect steal smile Nice guitar @ bass work. Harmonies are great! They are so close, I thought some sort of Helicon plugin was used at first. Thank you for sharing.

A quiz? No one said there was going to be a quiz today! blush

I recognized the riff from Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood, but I have no clue about that bass outro.

Nice, moody minor key song. The snare seems to be placed a bit to the right. At least it's not mixed like some of those "stereo" pop songs from yesterday. wink

I like the hi-hat stuff. In the guitar solo, the stereo spread on the drum really comes through.

The harmonies are cool! They're a bit "loose", which fits the feel of the song.

There are some super-minor nits, like at 1:30 the melody comes in a bit louder than the prior phrase, or the guitar strums at 2:49. But I like that "loose" feel it gives the song.

At 3:20, the background vocals are singing something a bit different from the lead vocal, but it's too quiet to hear what they're saying. Now that I noticed it, I'm trying to figure it out, but it's too far back in the mix. Perhaps "You can..." or something? cry

But really, I didn't really pay attention to that stuff - I just enjoyed to the song. laugh

Dave & Marty

Nice track. Very effective and a really good hook.

Like Tom I found it to be no burden in working out the borrowed riff.

The bass part - nope - think we'll need some help.

A thoroughly enjoyable song.

This is fantastic. Love those stolen, err borrowed lead lines. Super vocal and mix.

I also long for the songs of yesterday!

This is an outstanding song!

Great song, guys. Your best vocal to date, Dave, in my humble opinion. Also really liked the harmonies. Like others, I got the guitar quote but no idea re the bass outro.

Leon

Sadly, I cannot name that tune from your hints. No matter, this is a really nice piece. Love song with a deep dollop of melancholy. Very nice. Band sounds good and the mix of grit from both you and Marty set it up very well. Much enjoyed.

Dave & Marty,

A really nice song. Great idea/hook, put across well. Nice, "comfortable" overall feel to it.

Terrific bass and guitar (needless to say!!). A good vocal.

Your solos are ALWAYS so musical and elevate the recording.

Mix sounds good to me...

Janice nailed the Animals immediately and now she's humming the bass tag line. Thanks guys -- this may last until she figures out the reference smile

"There's still a long road yet to ride,
and all of our songs will be our guide."

Great "on the road" lines!

One word comes to mind -- FUN!

We would like to be along on that drive.

You got that vocal thang going Dave along with the fine guitar chops and
the tight harmony and cool bass lines from Marty.

Enjoyed the spin!

That is one hell of a collaboration. Nice hook. As Marty says, I can't get it out of my head. Love the solo.

I had a listen to this last night. I got the guitar riff right away ;-).. Super vocal and lyric Marty and Dave. Loved the bass lines and the guitar solo was just excellent. I didn't get Marty's bass line at the end of the song though...

There's a little of the Chris Rea vocal there.
Nice, easy going song. Good mix.
Oh! and yes. I do long for some of those songs of yesterday (but not all):-)

I too love songs of yesterday!!! AND songs of today by Blue Attitude!!! This has a really pleasant retro groove that I dig, and some wonderful playing by you both! Nice minor blues vibe. And, the vocals were excellent too!! Take care. Greg

Thanks to everyone that listened to and commented on our song, we appreciate it!

Most people got the little lick from the Animals classic "Don't let me be misunderstood", all the people our age anyway. Marty's little quote is a bit more obscure, I didn't get it either. It's part of the song "She Loves You"

Outstanding song. You guys nailed this one. Great theme. Great blend of the band and the wailing lead guitar. Great lyrics and vocals. Ten thumbs up!

Nicely rolling pop rock tune, reminds me of some... song of yesterday smile Clever tribute! Catchy and melodic.
Very good vocals and playing, the solo guitar is the icing on this tasty cake.

The vocal really suits the theme and arrangement.
Ace playing and singing...bass from an ace certainly settled the matter.
Thematically strong as nostalgia AND love of good music do often send me looking backward...but I've not thrown out, sold or given away any singles, albums, CDs or cassettes from my 1st purchases in the late 60s and I buy newer music often so am in a lucky place.
Terrific song fellows.

haha, me too! I have all my old albums and 45's. And tons of CD's. First 45 I bought was Louie Louie and first album was Revolver, both back in the 60's. When I first started working in the 70's my weekly routine was to head down to the record store after I got paid and buy an album or two.

Thanks for the listen, Ray!

Hi BlueAttitude,

Very pleasant composition. I love the guitar which is really in harmony with your voice. It's sweet and pleasant. The atmosphere is melancholy without being sad. I appreciated. Well done.

Kindly regard

Love this Dave and Marty! This really takes me back in time! Love the smooth flow of this! Late 60's feel of Folk/Pop . That guitar solo is very nice! Marty is such a great addition to your musical offerings! Very nice work guys on a top notch song! T
