Tomorrow

Something I came up with nearly 40 years ago, but didn't finish until recently. I'm relieved to finally share it. It's been two years already since I uploaded a song. I experimented with a lot of drums and percussion ideas and almost gave up, and this kit is sort of cobbled together with percussion from one RD and kick and snare stems from another. I also tried to incorporate the RT Oohs and Aahs, which was a challenge. Thanks.

Scott

I read your intro about taking 40 years to finish this. I wasn't expecting too much and then you go and totally kill it Buffet style. All I got is yeah...'you killed it!'.
Super groovy island track!

Hi Scott,

Good song, well sung and good mix.

Look forward to hearing more of your songs.

Best Regards
Nigel

Well done, Scott. You created the perfect drum track (with loops and stems), and fashioned the ooze and oz just right. Man, 40 years for this beauty. I dig the island feel and the band is so good. Excellent vocal and mix. Everything shines through with a happy and hopeful feel for tomorrow. Yeah, like Mark said, you killed it by breathing new life into this 40 year-old gem.

So if you can keep up this pace, you will release your next album sometime around 2486 shocked

Not my favorite genre, but I like your song, it's well written and you have a good voice

Wow, that is some history regarding your song! Well, it was worth it because this song is a good 'un. Well sung and well produced. Good work!

Yep... nice one. Has a trop feel to it.... Certainly has a JB feel to it as well.
Posted By: firesong Re: Tomorrow - 10/02/22 07:10 PM
Scott...really nice song...it sure does have a Buffet vibe...great use of the nylon stringed guitar...great solo...you nailed the percussion...your efforts were worth the wait (maybe not 40 years next time)...really enjoyed the listen!

Hi Scott. It's like old home week!! Just listened to Steve Young who I hadn't heard in a long time, and you also return......what a good day!! This is a really cool song.......love the message and the way you put it to music!!! I think "the band" captured the vibe perfectly!!! NICE!!! Take care. Greg

Scott,

Forty years in the making, huh? Sounds pretty fresh to me . . . goes to show a good song withstands the test of time. Sweet vocal, nice mix. Good balance and touch on the background vocals . . . not always easy and you did it well. Good stuff!

All my best to you,

Deej

Scott,

Nice to see you back in the Showcase.

Nice one. Good vocals. Nicely mixed.

Kinda surprised that you did not use the BIAB steel drum RTs.

Don't be a stranger...

Scott,

This sounds great... Love the backstory. I guess we all have those old songs in the draw just waiting to be finished.

Nice job on this!

Thanks for the listens and the comments, the informative and the funny:)

Way back in like '85, I had a melody, a verse and a chorus, but it always seemed a bit too simple I suppose, and so I never did anything with it. I finally added another verse last spring and fired up BIAB for the first time in a long time. My wife isn't thrilled about some of the lyrics in that first verse, but in my defense, I hadn't even met her yet.

Steel drum RT's? I tried various kits and Reggae styles, but could never get the right groove. There was a Bossa Lewis RD kit that worked very well, but the swirl noise was too much and I couldn't get it out with EQ or gating. I didn't think to try RT's when looking for RD's. I'll remember that, Floyd. Thanks.

Hi Scott ...

Man, it's grreat to hear another one from you. And this resurrection went perfectly. Tottaly loved my listen. Di and I have always been very fond of tropical-based songs. And this one put a smile on both out faces.

I have a couple I wrote back in the late 70s I've thought about bringing to BIAB. They're kinda time-dated. Butg I might try to brinmg them around soon.

Nice music!

Good song Scott. Very relatable and the music really takes you away to the islands. I thought you made great use of that nylon guitar throughout and the ooh and ahhs came out nicely as well. Very easy listen.

Hi, Scott.

Well done with an engaging story. Excellent arrangement as well - loved the interplay between the instruments.

Good job singing it as well. smile

Scott,

You've really captured that tropical vibe with this! I know that is a good feeling when you've had a tune in the back of your mind for a long time and then finally be able to bring it to life! This is a great song with a great vocal also!

Thanks, Torrey

Thanks. I haven't had much success writing anything new, well, I have a couple 'new' incomplete songs, and so I'm trying to finish a few relics and make myself spend some time in the studio. Other stuff always seems to get in the way.

I'm not crazy about the second verse, and the song runs a bit long, but at some point you have to move on.

I'm glad to know it made you smile:)

Take care.

Very cool!

Song has a James Taylor vibe to it. Really well constructed and mixed.

Great vocal too.

Scott,
You nailed the Island vibe! No matter how long it took, the song is a keeper and the highlight for me is your warm, relaxed vocal. Good mix with those oohs/aahs fitting well.
Well done.

Robert.

Great to see you back and listen to this fine tune (cool backstory also).

The island vibe is nailed with the arrangement and excellent selection of tracks.
(all wrapped in a fine mix). The drum mashup and your acoustic sound good.

And those smooooooth vocals ice the cake.

There is a lot of feel similar to James Taylor’s Gorilla album ... a good thing.

Enjoyed it!

Thanks so much. It's funny how some songs just pop out, others have to dragged out into the open, and still others never see the light of day. Thanks again for the listen, Torrey.

JT? Wild. The reference track was the Ka'au Crater Boys' "You Don't Write." We lived on Oahu for few years in the early '90's and they were popular then.

Light feel good song is an excellent fit for the dark days of autumn. Great dreamful backing track, very nice Latin rhythm and enjoyable vocals. I can fully understand why a song called Tomorrow (mañana) took 40 years to finish wink

That's Brent Mason doing all of that great guitar work. Just the other day I commented on his Instagram telling him his RT's are fantastic and that I've used many of them. He said 'Thx!' which made my day.

Thanks for the listen and the kind words.

We lived on Oahu for about three years, though the song pre-dates that adventure. I hope you have a good time on your next island holiday:) Thanks for the spin and the feedback.

Hi Scott,

I als had a thought of making fun about the 40 years of composing. Even Leonard Cohen was closer than that.
But than I noticed others already made fun, so I concentrated on the song itself.
It is a very nice song that makes you long for a tropical island and a glass of rum, but I especially liked your vocals! Very cool!
Are you doing more with it, or do I have to get older to hear more (sh*t!, another crappy joke I said I wouldn't make).

Seriously, like a lot what I heard. Hope to hear more from you!

Thanks!

Not planning more with this song except that I may go back and master it closer to -10 LUFS or so. I targeted -14 LUFS but have since learned that's not ideal.

I've noticed several folks in the forum going back to earlier productions and updating them. That's on my to do list also, but for now I'm working on finishing a few more oldies and sharing them for the first time:)

oohs/aahs work really well on this track, so far I haven't had much luck with the myself.

So, 40 years .... hopefully we won't have to wait another 40 years for your next one wink

Thanks:)

It does take some editing/automation to get those Oohs and Aahs to sound smooth and to blend. I created at least one different BiaB Song in which I took out a number of chords which made a big difference. The generated Oohs/Aahs were more consistent with less transients. In the mix I used several fades to tame them also.

Very nice. I really enjoyed this. The band sounds great, wonderful vocals!
Nice job getting the oooh's & ahhh's to work that well. I have been unable to make that happen... Yet!
I agree with the James Taylor references, but also hear a good deal of Buffet in there.

Well done!

I'm glad you finished this - it's a cool little thing.
RT oohs n ahhs can be challenging to mix. I find they need a lot of reverb and, occasionally, some tuning.
I enjoyed the song and the chorus is really nice.
