Brian, Thanks. The FX is actually Waves Harmony. Sometimes it sounds great, but I find it to be artificial sounding overall. Bob

Alan, Sorry to hear about Di's health setback. Sending good thoughts her way and your way... This is a great song. The instrumentation is absolutely beautiful and this may be the best vocal I have ever heard from Ray. High production overall and just an all around awesome piece of music. Bob

It might be harder to get users to "pay for fixes" rather than new features ? I think Peter may of said it would be easier to add the chord entry on any beat in the Track view Chord Track same as Cubase, Studio One etc.. ? The best place to start with real time signatures, 255+ bars, real tempo maps is with the JUCE Plugin when they move the generate code into it, get rid of all the old limiting factors, giving it a quantum leap. I can generate up tracks in Reaper in any time signature and any number of bars. [Linked Image]

I suspect that it's possible that getting these tired old issues out of the way for once and for all might actually be sweetener enough. Maybe a poll?
Many of us have stated that for just one release, we would prefer to see 50 'improved features', rather than the usual 50 'new features'. Those 'improved features' would handle the constraints of 255 bars, integer time signatures, complicated and sometimes confusing menu structures, and much more. I personally think it would be a major selling attraction to users. Many users probably don't upgrade because they don't consider this or that new feature sufficiently useful. On the other hand, I am confident that significantly more users would upgrade if it fixed some of the existing shortcomings that they currently endure. Unfortunately, we have never been able to convince the company to adopt this approach.

HI Carl, Well, another gem from you! I always love a good Pop-Blues. And when a slight element of funk squeaks through, so much the better. Your playing is always so super-smooth and a joy to listen to. Your music is always pleasing to my ears - love your style. Wishing you the very best, Alan

HI Misha, What a great song! You have a great assembly of instruments from the various sources. In my opinion, this is a super vocal - perhaps the best of what I've heard from you. A very satisfying listen - smooth yet exciting. It's contemporary and fits perfectly with today's music. Wonderful lyric, arrangement, and mix! It has everything it needs to be a perfect listen! Best to you, Alan

Hi Marty & Dave, You gentlemen never disappoint. Everything you do is pure gold - this one's 24-carat! Dave's guitar is on fire, your bass line is so perfect, and the lyric is a great read. Your vocal sits in there perfectly! This is great music! Everything is perfectly done and produced. Congrats to both of you on a terrific song! Take care, Alan

HI Hans, Di and I are both 77 years old. My health and mental status are still very good - I had a physical today, and the Dr. said I was as healthy as a 50-year-old! Di, on the other hand, has been ravaged by the calendar. This is a great song! You and Anne-Marie sound great together. The lyric is so true, unfortunately, for many folks as they age. Best to you, Alan

HI Chay, I listened to the first four and a half minutes. I would have loved to listen to the end, but my time here is extremely limited due to my wife's very serious health issues. Trying to listen to as many folks as I can. Loved the sax! This is a really nice, easy-to-listen track. As soon as I can I'll listen to the full song. Take care, and nice work! Alan

Re: How do you actually generate music ideas? David Snyder 04/11/24 03:12 AM Forum: Songwriting Jump to new postsJump to new posts
I agree with Charlie and Mike among others. As Charlie stated, the key ingredients of a memorable song include a location and a story line and a dramatic arc. Where are we? What's going on? Why does it matter? What's the conflict or tension? Next, what are we going to do about that conflict and tension?? This usually occurs in the chorus. Or if we're not going to do something we just tell you what we think about that. The last line of this Chorus is typically the title of the song. V I was standing on a corner in Winslow Arizona Such a fine sight to see There's a girl my Lord in a flatbed Ford Slowing down to take a look at me Ch Hmmmmmm. Anyway, insofar is melodies are concerned, I am like Mike in that I write 90% of my stuff in the car. I don't have to think about the story structure because that's kind of in my bloodstream and I wouldn't imagine writing the lyrics to a song without having a story structure, or at least something compelling to say (a hook) if there is not a story line or location per se. These lines just kind of pop out of my head. I carry stacks of index cards around and write song titles and chorus ideas down constantly, everywhere I go, every day, all day, 7 days a week. Even in church. At a restaurant. Everywhere. But those melodies: I usually get them while I'm driving along in the car and they fly by my brain like a bluebird and I make sure that I have my telephone recording app within reaching distance so if I start humming or saying something out loud I can capture it. Because if I wait until I get home I forgot what I was singing and then I want to shoot myself. For inspiration, I create a bunch of chord progressions in the keys that I like to sing in with different styles in band in a box and have them on my phone as MP3s, in different grooves. Like some are ballads, some are mid tempo, some are up-tempo etc. If I'm feeling in a ballad mood I'll just press the trigger and start listening to something with no lyrics as I'm driving along and then start mumbling some words or singing out loud. All I want is the gist of the idea and the melody. I can figure out the chords later. That in essence is my songwriting process.

HiMario, To my ears, it sounds like a mix of early 50s pop and early 70s pop rock. But whatever else it is, is pretty darn original, creative, and a super listen. The nice thing about your posts is we never know what to expect, but we know it's going to be enjoyable. Nice!!! Alan

Hey, Hold off on learning your parts. I just discovered tonight in the 2nd verse that some of my chords last only 2 beats when they should last 4. They're 4/4 bars, I just made a stupid mistake, and worse, I couldn't figure out how to add those extra beats. I'm waiting for some assistance, and I'll get back asap. Tanx, KC

I think I'm just going to leave BIAB behind for this tune. It just gets too convoluted for me. I don't want to use 3/4 bars bcuz that messes up the feel. I really don't understand why they did it this way.

Re: Any Old Codgers Looking for Good Collaborators? David Snyder 04/11/24 12:37 AM Forum: Songwriting Jump to new postsJump to new posts
I am a spoiled rotten, insanely arrogant musical genius who hates old codger music and is impossible to get along with. I will refuse to do anything that you say and demand that you adapt to my preferences because I always come first in any project I take part in. It is because I don't really like other people and don't think they deserve to be in the same room as me. I charge $5,000 a note and expect to be paid in advance. However, on the bright side, I can play anything. Feel free to reach out if you are interested.

Are you looking for a GM sound source? If so google/bing GM VSTs and you will find many options. If you want the best sounding MIDI sources you will have to not use GM, but of course you will have to assign each track to a MIDI sound source. You can enter that world with the free Kontakt Player, the free IK MultiMedia Sampletank 4, as well as a number of good sounding free VSTis.

Thanks for all the responses and some great questions. The music is all covers. Classic Rock, Blues, Rock and Roll, Country, Oldies. I would like to find something under $100 but a little more wouldn't break the bank if it provides a significant improvement.

Have you tried twice as many 3/4 bars instead? The Bars/Chords may cooperate better that way. BiaB is based on 3/4 or 4/4 in my experience, and anything else is the application trying to adapt the the task (faking it to the best of it's ability) So giving it 2X as many 3/4 bars may give you better chord control Just an idea at this point

Budget would be helpful. Are you looking for a free one, or do you have a little something to spend? As mentioned by DrDan, VSTSynthFont64 is free with a little effort, and there are many sound font options to choose from that would likely be better than Coyote .. Also, what kind of sounds/music? Country, Orchestra, Bluegrass, Rock, Synth .. (?) I assume for a GM app like BiaB

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
