Even though I have my soloist set at maximum setting when I'm playing a live solo using soloist > edit soloist track > record to soloist part, I still find I can hardly hear what I'm playing whilst recording. This is particularly bad for me as I play by ear not by music.
I gather I can adjust everything else by holding down Alt whilst increasing the soloist setting, but I don't really want to adjust the balance between them, as when it plays back it's usually either fine or even too loud.
Is there a setting somewhere that you can select to drop the BIAB backing by, say 50% during soloist recording?

Are you trying to record a MIDI or an Audio part?

There should be no reason to have to adjust the level of the other parts down to hear yourself, it is likely a setting somewhere else that needs attention.

So tell exactly what you are doing, the hookup, the soundcard, etc. and maybe we can get to the bottom of that instead, for it is never a good thing to adjust the level of the backing track monitoring when recording, you need to be able to hear them as they would or should sound.

Hi,

an easy way to achieve solo volume increase is to use the Piano Roll. Read the documentation how to do it.

I'll have a look at the piano roll. Thanks.

Thanks again Mac.

I'm trying to play midi using a USB keyboard (Evolution Ekeys 37).

In the meantime here's my setup:

BIAB 2009 (latest build), Windows XP Pro SP3.

Soundblaster Live 24 bit

Virtual Sound Canvas DXi with PG Dynamics and PG Peak Limit

Anything else you need?

By the way, when I say "playing live" I don't mean "in front of an audience" I mean "not using the BIAB soloist maker"!

The PG Dynamics and Peak Limit plugins may not be available in live playing, but could be chewing up resources needlessly. Save that for after the recording of the parts. Actually, you shouldn't need them. Not "yet" anyway.

Check the Playback software mixers for that Creative card, sounds like some of the outputs may not be turned up enough. Try turning the Wave output all the way up in the Playback, then the Master, too, if available on the software mixer you have. The ?VSC DXi plays back on the Wave bus. The Creative mixer will also list a MIDI fader, but that is for the Soundfont engine and not the VSC DXi.

You still have not told us WHAT you are attempting to record, though. MIDI keyboard? Acoustic or electric guitar to Audio track? Vocal to audio track? Audio or MIDI recording?

Or Audio or MIDI live playing, for that matter.

Just so you know, I do not have to turn anything up or down in order to record either here. My soundcard settings are "normalled" such that I don't have to. Just punch the big red button and play. You should be able to adjust for same performance at your end.

Thanks Mac,

I'll check into the settings you're suggesting. I know that sometimes BIAB resets some settings, so I'll keep an eye on that as well.

But I'm confused when you say:

I've already said:

Just to clarify, I'm playing the keyboard and recording it live to the solo track (Midi).

Hope that helps.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
