Hi there,

I'm very new to band in a box and so far it seems great. I've managed to manually enter in chord progressions and load up songs with pre-filled progressions, but what i'm most interested in doing is being able to select from a list of formulas (I-IV-V; ii-V-I; V-I etc,..) to auto generate chords for me.

You start up BIAB and it usually starts on C, is there a button or function that will allow me to auto-generate I-IV-V for the whole song.

I am a music student and i am trying to get my head around theory, namely cadences and chord progressions and itd be great if i could just throw in different kinds of conventional progressions and compare them.

Any clues?

Hi. Welcome to the forum.

BIAB is an ideal tool for learning theory precisely because you can enter any chord progression - yours, or one from a leadsheet or fakebook - and hear it.

Perhaps what you are looking for is a powerful little function that takes a progression and makes suggestions for alternatives. Type your chords, use the mouse to highlight a range, and go to the menu Window, Chord Substitution Dialog. Lots of options there, and a great study tool.

Or are you looking for a function that will follow the melody and write the simple progression for you that fits it?

You can set BIAB Chord grid to Roman Numerals. Then type in the Roman Numerals instead of the chords.

The toggle is the toolbar button with the big I on it, a capital I actually, but of course stands for Roman Numeral one.

After entering ii V7 on beats one and three of bar one, enter I on beat one of bar two. Copy and paste as far out as needed.

Then, just hit the Roman Numeral toolbar button again. It will toggle through Do Re Mi and Nashville notation with each hit, keep on pressing it to return to fake chords.

Once at fake chords on the grid again, changing the keysig dropdown will change the key of them for you.

Or you can set the Practice Transpose to change keys on every repeat for practice purposes.

Think the target tonic when you see the two to start out. Play the scales that work over the tonic for both bars at first. Then expand.

Hi,
There should also be a "JazzPrac" folder in your bb folder, that has several practice songs like that in it.

That's great Andrew.

I've been hesitant to mention the jazzprac folder because I wasn't sure if it still was part of the package.

Locate that "jazzprac" folder in your bb folder, dhaub, there are already some two five one drills laid out in it.

Use that folder to add your own drills and use those drills to quickly customize them into files for your own personal practice regimen, too.

I guess I've always had a sort of obsessive/complusive thang about practicing.

Have fun,

Wow! Thanks guys!

Matt: If BIAB has the ability to suggest chord alternatives for any chord progressions the user inputs, does it have a precompiled list of all the possible chord progressions for a given key? Something that you could use for a blank slate at the beginning of a project, like an auto-composing/auto-leadsheet feature!?

In either case, I'm going to try the auto-generate melody feature for chord chart and vica-versa, play around with auto transposing and try some of those drills. This program has got me excited!!

It must have a pre-programmed collection of progressions stored somewhere, from which it draws the suggestions. I don't know how it works, but I know what to look for and I'll take a look and see the file is something users can access.

Yes, you should be excited by this program!

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
