Hi all
I am about to migrate my BIAB to a windows 7 PC
As I have have been a regular MegaPAK upgrader since (at least) BIAB 10 untill BIAB 2010, I expect to install from every CD/DVD on top of each other in order to keep all the "extras" that I stil want to use. (E.g on the oldest BIAB MegaPAK CD's the product 'Master Jazz Guitar Solos' were delivered)

My problem, however, is that when I insert the BIAB 10 CD in the win 7 machine, it is not readable.
Next problem is that when I insert the CD in the very same XP machine that I installed on 4 years ago, it is not readable on that either. In fact it stalled the disc drive so I had to force it opened.

Now to the questions:
Have any of you experienced that the old CD's wear out/get unusable over time? (They have not been exposed to any extreme climatic environments since last install).
Do you have any alternative strategy for migrating years of compiled BIAB stuff to another computer?
BR Kamilu

Contact PGMusic sales and see if they have a download link for the programs you can no longer load.
Or maybe even a fresh disk they could send..

Hi Kamilu,

I have always run BIAB/RB from desktop PCs. When I migrate to a new PC, what I do is to simply hook the hard drive of my old PC up to the motherboard of my new PC. Start up the new computer and simply copy all the BIAB/RB folders from the old drive to the new one. Once that is done, I then reinstall the latest version software on the new computer. This seems to have worked ok for me and it's allowed me to keep everything that I've collected over the years.

In relation to your question about CDs/DVDs degrading/corroding over time, I have had that happen also.

Regards,
Noel

I would like to do what you stated in your reply, connect my old hard drive from an older XP machine to the mother board of my new one. Just how did you do that, as I am not that savy. Someone told me I would have to make the old hard drive a slave hard drive before I could read anything off it. I have some Norton styles on the old one I would surely like to save, plus, all my BB folders all the way back to Ver 6.

Hi David,

I've sent you a private message.

If you do not feel confident being a technician, another option available to you is to buy a usb to usb direct netlink bridge. Carefully explain to sales staff what you require so that they don't end up giving you the wrong cable.

http://www.usbgear.com/link/index.html

The one above is a "driverless model". From what I read, this is simply "plug it in and off you go!". There are also models that require you to install drivers (and a small disk management program) on each of the two computers connected.

Hope this helps,
Noel

If you already have a router, there's an additional option that doesn't require a crossover cable: Windows Easy Transfer. It comes with Win7 and the XP version can be downloaded free from Microsoft. You cable each box to the router, run WET on each one, and follow the prompts. Not sure it's any faster than USB to USB, but it's mighty convenient.

Caveat: it can't be used to transfer an *installed* program - ie. one with registry entries. It's intended for data file transfer. But since BB doesn't use the registry, I believe even it can be transferred this way and still execute.

FWIW.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
