I am old to music....new to BIAB. Just purchased BIAB 2012. Neat stuff. My initial question is:
I want to generate vocal harmonies, mostly 2 and three part. I've been able to do that to my satisfaction. I can create separate wave files for the harmonies. Is there a process or routine to get the audio harmonies to the printed page after they have been created?

Can you convert the audio to midi and then print the music from the midi file?

This is the first of many questions

Thanks in advance

-Tom

Eeugh. There certainly are tools out there, including some free ones, that convert audio to MIDI, but I don't think there are any in BIAB -- and certainly not for the audio harmonies. I think you might be able to get the MIDI harmonies into notation, but I've never played with that. Anybody? Bueller?

PowerTracks and RealBand have an audio to MIDI menu selection; I've never used it so I don't know how well it works. But it might get you close (I think it only works with non-chordal audio - one note at a time).

I have never used real band but doesn't it include the t c heliccon harmonizer?
I do use a tc helicon harmony G xt pedal but never tried recording with it. Sounds excellent live if you mix it in correctly.

I am very happy with the TC Telicon harmonizer. I do have one question. Did I miss a setting somewhere that will allow audio harmonizer to follow the lead vocal closer as opposed to using just chord changes? It misses many of the passing notes.

Thanks

TC can be set to follow chords or it can be set to follow a MIDI Melody on the Melody track.

Of course, that means there must be a MIDI Melody on the Melody track for the Helicon to be able to follow.

For best TC Harms - Use a mono vocal track that is dry, no FX etc. Use the Maj chord instead of Ab6 etc when processing the harms. Throw in a 7th chord if there are more then 2 bars of the SAME chord for different harmonies.

Generate each harm to their own track, then edit them with FX and pan to blend better in the mix.

I don't know about audio harms to notation/midi, sorry.

In RB you can set the Harmonizer to follow different MIDI tracks so you can 'play' the notes you want the harmonies to 'sing' on a track beforehand, then tell Harmonizer to use those tracks for each voice.

I still like to do them one at a time so I can tinker with the other settings available, like male/female and portamento for each 'backup vocalist' part.

Is there a video available that shows how to accomplish with TC what Mac and rharv describe? Thanks.

Record the notes you want to "sing" on a MIDI trck
Record yourself singing the parts

Use Harmonizer and pay attention to the options on how it is going to harmonize. One of them is to use a MIDI track instead of chords. Once you get how to make one work, you'll be doing three at a time pretty quickly.
Experiment; it's rather intuitive if a little time is invested. That's how I learned what it does.
I don't know of any videos, but there may be some.

Tip;
Play the MIDI notes in the correct range and timing. Mid-low if you desire a baritone voice .. mid-upper for alto .. etc. That's part of the experimenting; finding the right range for the male/female selection and singing it in time with the MIDI so it doesn't jump suddenly or "warble". Which means playing the MIDI as if you were singing it (timing wise) so it naturally tunes the voice, as opposed to starting after the vocal part, which will make it jump to the new note.
Lean toward the early side.

Rharv,

If the guide MIDI notes are tweaked with CC (fade in , pitch wheel etc) is the harmony affected by the same tweaks?

(Yes, yes I know I should try it myself.. but since you have already invested time in experimenting I'm hoping you already know the answer.)

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
