I'm using BIAB 2009.5 as a means to practise my blues guitar playing.
The track I'm working with is from RealTracks Demos: "Blues Quintet featuring El. Blues Monday Guitar". However, when BIAB generates a solo I like, I can't find a way to save that exact solo with the file. I use the 'replay' button to keep the same solo, but if I have to shut down BIAB, when I open the song and press play it generates a different solo. The solos are generally all good, but I want to stick with one particular solo in order to learn it from the Guitar Window.

I tried saving as a MIDI file, but that only saved the drum track!

Is it possible to save the solo with the file?

I don't remember what was available with 2009.5 but you can try assigning the soloist to either the Soloist or Melody track and generating it there.

I guess you know 2012 has the ability to Freeze a track.

You can do this at least one sure way and maybe two. I'm not sure if 2009.5 has the "freeze tracks" feature or if that came in later. Right click on any instrument and look at the bottom of the window. If it says freeze track then that's all you need to do. If it's not there, then that's one of many good reasons to upgrade.

The other way is to move the solo to the audio track. That won't regenerate. Of course if you're already using the audio track then you really need to upgrade to get the freeze track option.

As to saving as a MIDI file, you're missing the fact that Real Tracks are not midi, they're audio. Any time you use RT's as individual instruments there's no midi to create a midi file from. If you were using a Real Drum part (that's audio too) then you wouldn't even have drums in your midi file. That audio track I mentioned earlier is not one of the regular instrument tracks, it's a separate audio track that you can record your own instrument or vocal to and keep it along with the rest of the Biab song.

I don't think saving the audio is the issue. Seems like being able to follow along with the Guitar Window is what (s)he wants.

Yes, it's the ability to keep the Guitar display showing the same riffs that I was after.

There is no freeze in my older version. Just an option 'Save RealTrack as WAV'.

If I could read music, I would output the song as audio, print the sheet music and follow that. I realise that the riffs are basically from a selection that are repeated in different regenerations, but it gets confusing trying to learn them when they change order, if you know what I mean.

Thanks for the MIDI info. I should have known that.

I wonder if I save the track as a WAV, if there is a way to import that exact wav into the track, and if that's possible, would it still show the guitar fretting on the fretboard?

Thanks for the replies.

Erotemata is a 'him', BTW. I should sign off as:

No unless the track was Frozen when exporting - which, I believe, was not available in 2009.

Not all RTs have notation. If the one you are using has notation, copy the generated track to the Soloist or Melody track. You'll have to use a Midi instrument to play but the notes should be the same. I believe it should keep after exiting BIAB. I don't know how it will look in the Guitar window though.

Again, BIAB 2009 is a distant memory in my pea brain.

Umm...nope. It is MIDI that translates directly to notation. Real Tracks are audio, not MIDI. Some of the Real Tracks will show notation, but that is only because those tracks were subjected to the extra step of a person listening to the audio, figuring out the notes, and adding the required information to the RT as MIDI data. The notes you see on these tracks are only approximate, and only show in BiaB or RealBand. The notes are not saved when you save as a WAV file.

If you want to play along with the track...
Click on Wav Icon click on all tracks rendered, maybe normalize and stereo.
This will save all your tracks as separate wav files, normally added into
DAW's.

In this case erase all the tracks except your wanted solo track.
Play it in WMP, or in Audacity(there you can change tempo).

Good Luck!

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
