My question has to do with a recent purchase, a MIDI keyboard controller. It's an M Audio Oxygen 49, and I've just learned what a DAW is (digital audio work station, right?). Other than playing music into PT, would I be able to use some of the other bells and whistles to make the program do things (Rec, PB, FFWD, etc.). Also, This is a new computer running WIN 7 64, and I hope this won't complicate things. If you have any words of encouragement/instruction, please respond.

Thank you!

I've been using PT extensively for over nine years. I play only the piano, but have used PT to write and/edit scores for accompaniment (voices, bass and rhythm). I use it mostly for editing my inevitable mistakes in midis I've recorded live (is anyone perfect?).

By editing, I mean changing the velocities of notes, copying and pasting in intros or endings, or combining several takes (selecting the best parts).

As a primarily solo player, it's really all I need - plus a good piano sound.

Glenn

PS - I use Pianoteq for the piano sound - the onboard sound of digital pianos is lifeless and boring, and they are all looped. Samples have reached their peak - their sound isn't going to get better than it is, and the next edition of Pianoteq will make samples sound like the old technology it is.

My question has to do with certain functions on a keyboard controller that, when configured properly to a software program, allow you to operate things like start/stop, record/playback volume, track selection, etc., from the keyboard controller instead of having to go to your computer keyboard for such things. For example, The M Audio keyboard I'm getting will, out of the box, give one control of Pro Tools from the controller. There are drivers at M Audio for other software programs that allow the same type of control. The nearest thing to it I can find is a reference in the PT manual about some wireless interface that gives you this kind of functionality, but I don't want to go wireless. I am willing to set everything up manually if need be; I just need to know how and what to use. This has nothing to do with piano or any other sound. I just want to get more functional use of the controller keyboard.

I'm not sure about the Oxygen. Some MIDI messages are pretty common messages, and some features like the start stop work, if you set the program to accept certain things. It is pretty hit and miss though, mostly because a lot of those features aren't really 'standardized' officially. Can't say if it will or won't work that way. I had workstations I was able to get pretty well sync'd to PT (reading start/stop and even song position ponter), but I had other workstations of the same brand that didn't. And that has happened with more than one brand (I am a Roland guy, and my friend Barry is a Yammie guy).

I'd send an email to support, they probably do have access to that info. More than any of us users would for specific brands, etc. Just a thought. Support button at top leads to a special 'sales' section, worth clicking. They even have Live Chat now.

I did send an email to support, and although there isn't any direct path to using transport controls from the keyboard, they suggested tying in transport controls and the keyboard macros, so I'm going to try that. Anyway, thanks for your input.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
