Here's a great way to make percussion loops for use in BiaB.

Open RealBand. Set the tempo to something appropriate, say 100bpm. Select one, two or four bars, whatever is appropriate for the percussion you are going to use.

Now generate a realdrums track such as BossaRockPerc^, variation 2 - Congas. There are quite a few RD tracks featuring percussion variations and there are a few that I created and are available from my profile.

Test the short track created by RD and tweak it as you see fit. Now just save the track as a wav file in the \bb\RealTracks\Loops folder.

To use it as a loop, right click an empty BiaB track and click 'Select a loop for this track'. Instant percussion loop, easy as that.

Remember, you can double, or halve the tempo easily by changing the tempo from 100 (the tempo we created the loop at) to 200 or 50. Similarly, you can change the beats from 4 (for a one bar loop) to 8 or 2.

How would these be different/better from what BIAB would generate?

You can add them to any empty track. You aren't restricted to the drums track. That means you can add congas or mixed percussion even though you have an existing drum track. Plus, with little effort you can mix congas with other percussion which you can't do with RDs alone.

I guess I am still not understanding the concept and value of loops. Maybe it's because I try to make every song very different from the one before it and don't want the same drum passages in multiple songs. Or maybe I truly just don't get the concept.

You can always select a number of bars and generate from a Real Band snippet, so the concept of "add them to any empty track" is again something I don't understand.

I am using the new 1040XTRAEZ form this year. It has just 2 lines.

He's talking BiaB, not RB. Track restrictions in BiaB.
And I don't think the idea is to use the same loop in different songs, they are a quick easy way to make repetitive parts in the same song.

Cut and Paste was a decent option up until the new version. Now, if they are labeled as loops (as opposed to cut/paste) they will follow the chord changes in the song. Quite an improvement.

PW that is a great tip, i have several nice loop disks from my old Acid Pro days, and i do just that.

With the loop feature, and elastique algo, you can add any sound you want.

Now THERE was the information I needed to hear. It isn't just setting the "Thriller" bass line loop and it plays for 4 minutes. It follows the chord changes. That's what I didn't think a loop COULD do was follow along to a score and move with the music. I thought it was a persistent loop of one pattern.

Now I have to look into it more.

Well, I found out about midnight last night that I will be getting a copy on PG's dime, so I will have it to play with. I love that PG responds so quickly to bug reports that there are updates already. Can't wait for it to arrive!!

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
