I have hooked up two external midi synths to Realband via Motu fastlane 2 x midi interface and MOTU 2408 A/D interface to receive analog output from the synths. I have asio4all for audio and LoopBe for midi , plus the fastlane midi drivers.

I can get either one of the two synths to playback but not both together. Each synth is on a different port (fastlane A and B) and selected. Each one will play with the DXi synth. Depending on which input port I select under preferences\audio\drivers, one or the other synth will playback through the monitor. Not both.

It seems only one asio input port will work at one time although it allows me to select up to 4 in one go. (4 x stereo).

Both are receiving midi signals and the "silent" synth is playing because I can hear it in headphones attached to the synth, but not back thru the main monitors.

Any ideas why I can't get the two external synths to playback together?

On the 2408 the green lights flicker for channels 1,2,3,4 but I only hear either 1,2 or 3,4.

The problem is either in the 2408 (I've enabled it for routing) or the RB asio drivers - I think.

thanks in advance.

Are you assigning the ASIO ports via the Tracks View, rightclick on the area below the trackname and select the right port for each track?

yes, done that. Ports are Fastlane A and Fastlane B.

According to your post the MIDI ports are working. If both synths can be heard thru the headphone jack on the synth, then the synths are recieving MIDI from RB
That's the fastlane side of it (MIDI) according to your post above.
""plus the fastlane midi drivers.""

When you said Fastlane A and B were you talking about MIDI out drivers? Mac asked about ASIO input drivers

Sounds like a monitoring issue, which would be an audio setting.

How is the sound getting from the synth to the monitors? Explain the signal path ..

... or maybe ASIO4All is only handling 2 ASIO channels for your soundcard, since you listed that as a driver. Aren't there better suited ASIO drivers available?
Since you are using external synths, have you tried using WDM (MME) drivers? If you are not using a softsynth for playback from your other synths' keyboards, there really isn't any loss in using those drivers instead; often less problamatic.

Make your sound your own!
.. I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

This is your answer as far as your computer setup is concerned. Both synths are responding to midi so it sounds like an external audio routing problem unless when you listen to each synth, they're both responding to the same tracks then you might have a output port problem. Please describe what you're using for sound and how do you have the cables running from the synths to your external sound setup.

The midi side of things looks ok. Both the synths are receiving midi concurrently from different RB tracks (the midi light flashes and I can hear the output via headphones).

From the analog outputs at the back of each synth a cable (L & R) runs to the back of the MOTU 2408 into channels 1-2 and 3-4. From the 2408 is a firewire connection to a PCI324 card in the PC. Now I'm not clear if the signal(s) is just being merged in the 2408 and sent straight back out the 2408's analogue outputs along with the Realband signal to the monitors, or if it goes down the firewire interface into the PC. I suspect it's the former. The 2408's analog ports send the final signal direct to the monitors.

ASIO4all is showing all 8 ports in and 8 ports out of the 2408. I am still using the softsynth. Could I use the MME drivers as well as the ASIO?

How do I assign an ASIO port from within Tracks when its a midi channel I'm using? Or do I need to set up an audio channel to partner the midi channel and receive the synth output?

Remember the issue is I can only hear one of the synths at a time. So the signal path seems ok when I'm using only one of the external synths?

thanks for your help

That MOTU looks like a heckuva unit at about $1,000. I'm pretty sure your problem lies in your CueMix DSP. I have the EMU 1820M Audiodock with their PatchMix DSP. My PatchMix is famously complex and hard for a noob to understand and I haunted the EMU forum for some time before I figured it out. My setup is almost exactly the same as yours. Any analog signal be it a mic or instrument goes through my Audiodock, out a Firewire cable to a PCI card and the audio outputs go to my mixer and then to my studio amp. In my case I had to set up the output monitoring inside PatchMix and I suspect you have to do the same.

Motu has very good ASIO drivers, so ASIO4All is not really ideal. ASIO4All is a wrapper for WDM drivers. I would guess Bob is on to it here!

I've solved it - thanks for all your advice. Especially Jazzmammal who put me in the right direction.
The MOTU 2408 has a software based cuemix console. (in addition to another config panel - confusing huh?) I needed to configure that for some extra channels. I now hear both synths.

Thanks again.

Glad you got it worked out. Most digital mixer applets are very basic, easy to understand but also limited. Emu's Patchmix and I'm sure your CueMix as well are very sophisticated mixers and allow you to do some "pro level" things. Like anything else that's worthwhile, it requires some time to learn and that can be confusing but once you do, it's very cool.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
