Hi folks. Just got my hands on a second hand M-Audio Oxygen 49 USB MIDI controller. Price €50. Barely 2 years old and hardly ever used (so the man says). Trouble is: no box, no manual and no installation CD (and no original receipt, of course). First of all, is this a fair price? It looks as the guy says. Second, does anybody know what is on the installation CD? And last but not least, what should I test for to see if I will take it? So far, I have put down €20, the rest is on trust.

Thanks

You can download the .pdf manual from the M-Audio website.

O-8 is Class Compliant and therefore needs no driver disk to install. Just plug in the USB cord (with Band in a Box or other MIDI program NOT running at the time) then turn on the keyboard and wait for the Windows OS to recognize it. That's what Class Compliant means.

The Manual is certainly needed to find out what, how, why and when of the various controls on the thing.

Sam that probably isn't a good price here in the states, but I have no idea about where you are. A brand new gen 3 can be had for US $122.98 on ebay and other places, and they depreciate fairly fast. I would suggest doing an ebay search and adjust from there.

As far as the software on the cd, You can download what you need from the m audio site.

Hope that helps.

Later,

I disagree. M-Audio Oxygen models are very highly rated. I will take a wild guess that 50 Euros is something like 60US. If that is true, then you got a very good keyboard for about half of the price quoted above. About par for an older model. Maybe its not a screamin deal, but I would say this is a fair price for a reliable keyboard with a good list of features and a proven reputation.

I just sold one last month for $85. The older generation models actually have one advantage - they can be used standalone with MIDI hardware as they have standard DIN MIDI connections. The newer models only have USB midi connections so they can only be used with a DAW/computer. However, in my opinion, the older models key-bed left alot to be desired - very stiff for my tastes - hence one reason I sold it. FWIW I paid just over $100 for it about 5 years ago.

Tons of controllers on them, but unfortunately most are over on the right side of the axe - if you are used to playing melodies and chords with your right hand, you'll be reaching over with your left arm/hand quite a bit.

This is one reason the new Casio XW-P1 was so attractive to me - all of the controllers are on the left 1/3 of the axe; sliders, knobs, etc. all where the left hand has quick and easy access.

I have a little M-audio controller keyboard and I love it...

it's not only a keyboard, it also works as a control surface, audio I/O interface and MIDI I/O interface. I don't know if your model has the audio I/O.. but if it does, that alone makes it worth the money.

It definitely offers MIDI I/O at a price that is comparable to many MIDI I/O only interfaces. Plus you get the control surface, keyboard and possibly audio IO thrown in at no extra charge.

Ask the current owner for whatever software came with it. M-audio typically bundles software with their products

No software. Not even the original box. It is USB with only a Sustain I/O

One bit of software you definitely want to download (and that goes for everyone here) is the free Air Ignite program that comes with M-Audio keyboards these days. Can't use VSTs with it, but it has its own quiet decent instruments. More to the point, it's intended for building songs with MIDI, one phrase at a time. It's got some nice preset phrases and chord patterns, is a breeze to learn, and frankly way too powerful to be free, so grab it while you can.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
