Anybody else around here have to deal with insomnia?
It's said to be fairly common among artists, musicians and creative types.
I've had it to some degree all my life.
Sometimes worse (like lately) and sometimes not as bad.
Just wondering - misery loves company...LOL!

Ha....

You're in good company.
I've had sleep issues since my military experiences to this very day.
Great...us creative types have that propensity too!
I'm a mess. smile

I keep Excedrin PM, Alka Selzter Nightime in my cabinet....always.
Sometimes Melatonin has been an aid for me but the dreams are odd sometimes.
So, I don't use it anymore.

Carry on insomniacs....

I have not dealt with that, but being retired, I can sleep all day....

I don't have insomnia. In fact, I sleep like a baby. Then I wake up crying with a wet diaper.
That was a joke. It was supposed to be funny.

No. Not insomnia. But, my creativity really starts going at around 9:pm. This keeps me working on music in my Doghouse well past mid-night 3 - 4 times a week. I have to force myself to stop and go to bed. I sleep through earthquakes and usually don't need to wake up until 7:am. I would make a terrible security guard on the night shift.

Josie,

Oh yeah. Since I was old enough to remember, I have not been able to turn my brain off. It just does not have an off switch. I was born without the off switch chip.

No problem concentrating at all. Just can't STOP concentrating.

Interestingly, my thesis advisor in grad school, Dr. Gregg Jacobs, is now the leading authority on insomnia and has some cool papers and books on it. You can do some research here.

http://www.cbtforinsomnia.com/about-us/

My basic method of going to sleep is I have to "de-stim" and "unplug." I can't be around any kind of electricity or jarring stimulation (like television, which I never watch anyway) for about two hours before bed or it gets me WAY too wired.

It also helps if I completely intellectually and artistically exhaust myself during the course of the day so that there literally is not an ounce of energy left in my brain. Long walks also help. And swimming until you can't swim anymore.

I can honestly say that if I did not have music as hobby to siphon off a lot of that energy I would be completely insane.

OK, so I know a lot of people are going to post and say "But David, you are insane..."--Ok, yeah, right, I already know it. I am talking about not going "completely" insane. Music helps with that a lot.

Answer the question Josie?

Josie,

Go to a used book store and pick up a nice book on algebra or geometry and read it for about 10 minutes before bedtime every night... It worked for me in 9th grade!!

Guilty as charged (unfortunately) ... however, given the opportunity, I sleep like a baby during the day .... laugh

Back in the day, when I was playing in a band on Friday and Saturday nights (usually 9pm - 1am), I'd get home around 2 and not be able to fall asleep. I tried everything I could think of and everything people suggested, still no go. I'd have music running through my head all night.

I asked my doctor if he would recommend an over the counter sleep aid of some sort. He would not, as he said they can become addictive. He prescribed a mild muscle relaxant and suggested using it sparingly, which I did and it worked just fine. I could come home from a gig, make a batch of popcorn, sit down to read the paper, and before the popcorn was gone, I'd be nodding off and ready to go to sleep.

Sooooo....
If your insomnia is a result of playing/working with (eg BIAB)/listening to music, and you can't sleep because you can't get it out of your head, you might try that.

Good luck!

Dear Josie,

I may have a solution...at least it works great for me. Download some Old Time Radio (OTR) and listen with a pillow speaker or earbuds. I'm sleeping within 22 seconds on average!

The mental clutter/litter that keeps us awake must be replaced by more benign stimuli.

Archive.org is an excellent source of OTR.

I have a HUGE collection if you would like a start, 2TB worth.

Nope.... I don't know what it is.

Since I was a young child, I have been able to lay down and be asleep in about 5 minutes average. And, I normally sleep all night.

Sorry if that grinds your gears, but that's my normal. I have even taken to catching a nap.... sometimes around 3pm to 5pm but every once in a while at 8pm or so.... and then wake up, go climb in bed and sleep until the sun comes up.

I can even drink caffeinated coffee before bedtime and still get to sleep quickly and sleep all night. As a younger man, I could go out and play, pop some stimulants of one sort or the other, go home and get right too sleep.

So I have heard some people can't sleep.... I feel your pain.... no, actually I don't, I'm getting ready for bed here shortly and I'll sleep on it.

Heck... just a thought.... use that insomnia time to write and record some music.

Yes I do Josie. It probably strikes for about a week every 8 weeks. I usually wake up at about 2 and struggle to go back to sleep. I get out of bed and go and make some tea and then drink my tea in bed, in the dark. When I am desperate I listen to podcasts and will usually go back to sleep at about 4. The other night I didn't go back to sleep at all so that was my nights sleep was 10 till 2!

For me, I just live with it, knowing that it will soon pass.

I'd also recommend checking them out.
I have about 14 gig of these OTR shows I got on the site your refer to a few years ago....I'm heading back there to see if there's anything I've missed. smile
Love those OTR shows and love that site for the 'benign' yet classic entertainment in which one's imagination comes into play.

Back to it...

I think insomnia is a different animal than what I would call "adrenaline rush". To me, insomnia is a sleep disorder that has become the norm. In other words, it doesn't have an assignable cause, it just happens regularly and you can't pin it on anything.

But... I think all creative people have experienced the adrenaline rush that happens when you finally get your brain wrapped around an idea, and it's really taking off, and you can't walk away from it.

Then suddenly its 6 am and you've been up all night ... and trying to go to bed just ain't happening because your brain is so stoked about the implications of the idea/song/project/whatever that it simply won't shut down.

If that's what you're talking about, I think we'd ALL have to say we know that demon on a first-name basis.

Thank you all so much for your responses! I'm glad I brought it up!

Don, and anyone else who uses one, what brand of pillow speaker do you use?

Josie, I've owned several but this is my current model:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0092TX8Y0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The padding is important to prevent ear fatigue and it's easily washable.

Some cheaper models are available but they soon feel like your head is laying on a brick. You won't need stereo with OTR but some friends prefer earbuds.

I have 2TB of OTR if you are need more. They are PD so I can upload a few of my favorites.

Josie,

3 a.m. and I seem to have a special friendship. I have no idea how it came about but in the last few years I've seen heaps of sunrises.

I'm just glad that I have BIAB. That keeps me entertained smile

All the best,
Noel

I'm not sure how to answer that. I used to have issues sleeping. Now I have it handled using a program and conditioning. So, it's an ongoing program, but I sleep great at night.

Clear or confusing?

This may sound obvious, but does the tea have caffeine? I know it wouldn't be waking you up, but it may have you staying up if it has it in it.

Also, do you have that before bed at all?

Just thoughts...

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
