I've been using MediaMonkey (free) for many years because it is feature-rich but the current update changed the GUI to the point that I'm completely lost. All of my default features have changed.

Any other MM users willing to help me sort it?

Don, I use the free VLC Media Player:

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html

But could you tell us what kind of media you play, so we can be more sure it will meet your needs?

I have MediaMonkey Gold, but I actually use it more for tagging my MP3 files rather than playing them. I agree that the UI has gotten too busy.

I actually still play my files using WinAmp (even though it's defunct, it still works on both my Win7 and Win10 computers).

I have iTunes also, but only really use it to load up my iPod 160GB classic.

I don't know about the free version, but MediaMonkey does have several skins and color palettes to choose from. Have you tried doing that, Don?

@Matt, I love to go to sleep while listening to OTR ( Old Time Radio ) I load a playlist of several hours of mp3 episodes ( I'm usually zonked in a few minutes ). Since updating to the current version, it only plays the first episode in the queue and then stops.

Another problem is that the GUI has been rearranged so I don't know how to get the features back that I had setup on the previous version.

I posted my problem to MM Support but it's still pending.

Thanks for jumping in.

If I can't get it sorted today, I'll try your recommended program.

MM has a lot of nice functions that I haven't found elsewhere.

Thanks, John.

I hadn't thought of changing skins but I'll explore that option.

Thank You

Like John, I'm a Gold subscriber. I just upgraded mine from 4.15 to 4.16 (current version) and didn't really see any change.

Maybe it is the skins that John referenced. If you can describe the differences a little more maybe that would help or what older version you are upgrading from.

Windows Media Player - whichever version is part of Win7 and Win8.1, but I don't use playlists with it.

Have you considered obtaining an inexpensive Android tablet or cast-off phone and going that route? How are you obtaining your mp3 files of OTR? If these are part of a podcast, it could be that you can just skip the whole playlist loading, and go right to podcast subscription and use.

Podcasts are nothing more than .mp3 files that get 'fed' to your podcast application of choice, and you can usually manage how many to keep in your queue, playback speed, etc.

Just a thought of a different and perhaps more convenient way for you to listen to these shows.

Understood. So, how do you currently form your playlists? I'm just curious, because with podcasts, it's a subscription that does the work of making a playlist for you, so to speak, and you just have to enable the playback.

For a windows machine, you can also use a podcast downloader with built in player and subscribe to your favorite podcasts. Miro is one of them that appears to do that as well as Grover.

It looks like Grover is only available for Win 10.

WinAmp will also work for a podcatcher and player.

@Scott,

I simply drag the mp3s into MM and hit Play. Fall down easy.

I worked on MM last night and it works again albeit a confusing
GUI.

@Jo,

I've used WinAmp before. If I can't sort this I'll go back to it.

Thanks for throwing out a lifeline.

See why I love this forum?

Whatever is set to default. As long as it plays my file, that's all I care about. I have tried at least 10 over my computer life and none is better than another to me. Once again, you like best what you best know how to use. The same reason people hang on to a 10 year old DAW.

I am using the new 1040XTRAEZ form this year. It has just 2 lines.

1. How much did you make in 2023?
2. Send it to us.

Eddie,

At my age (read mature) I'm very reluctant to take on new mental challenges. I spent years tweaking MM so I wanted to get it working properly and not need to start at square one with a new program if I could escape it.

I love these PG Forums because nobody flames me when asking a somewhat stupid question.

Got it Don. How do you get the MP3 files in the first place? That's where podcasts are a boon, they come to you instead of having to fetch them on your own

A site called www.archive.org has literally millions of OTR episodes that are in the Public Domain. I often download during the night.

I think you would like podcasts to do that work for you, but if it's not a bother for you to select the files you want to download and then get that started, then you are all set!

Just an FYI, here's several OTR podcasts I found:

http://www.cbsrmt.com/

This site has a pile of links to OTR podcasts:
https://player.fm/featured/classic-radio

Each of the links takes you to a page where you can subscribe to the podcast via RSS feed.

It's a really simple process once you get started.

If you decide to use WinAmp, then you can use these instructions to give it a try: http://www.wikihow.com/Add-Podcast-Subscriptions-in-Winamp

So do I ... I dont need all that fancy thing. Used MM before, but every time I upgrade, it was a new GUI, so I got lost... To old for an every day changing life... Have all my music sorted in folders, and that¨s all I need.. Go to the foler I want to play, ctrl a and hit play. That's all this old guy need.. wink Taggging, I use MP3tag... Works for me...

What is great for anything more advanced is the free Audacity.. I do a lot there... Like balancing volume, delete silence part in the end and beginning of tracks, fade in fade out, change the frequencies to 432Hz a.s.o. All in one go and for a whole folder if I want to. Planning to post a how to about that....

Forever Grateful, BUT, sometimes pissed of. wink

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
