I'm doing the February is Album Writing Month thing again this year. Just finished off my 11th song - which was inspired today while sitting in a waiting room at a Doctor's office. Listen to the song to understand why.

I post it here because I think some here MIGHT relate to the lyrics. If you want to listen to the other 10 songs, then you can click my name at the top of the page that this link will take you to.

Scott Lake - Gettin' Old is Gettin' Old

Enjoy.

I must agree that getting old is indeed getting old.

Good stuff, Scott.

Cool tune Scott. Nice lyrics and adventurous presentation. I got my Medicare card in Jan. so I can relate. Totally!

It's 1 a.m. and at 9 this morning the doc tells me how old I'm going to be. Scary.

So I can't sleep. Just a bit uptight. I just gave in and added what the wife calls, 'calm the F. down pills." I have lots of pills.

A year ago I was recording my songs, an album for my grandkids, and life was a party.

Now it's not. Bad gig. I aged 30 years in one. New cane. Hearing aids. Soft foods.

Don't put off the recording thing. I did. Now I've no voice, just a croak. I can't hear 50 percent of what is happening.

Just a little pea in my neck. Then it was a lemon. Then chemo, radiation, and chaos.

The only thing I have to hang on to is family, friends, and my music.

It's fine to laugh at life, but it's harder to laugh when the words Stage IV advanced cancer get thrown out.

Live now, Get stuff done. If you wanted to visit Australia book the trip. It might be too late.

Hug your kids. Make a Pot Roast. Play Satin Doll in Em just because you can. or Eb minor. Have an adult beverage or two.

Read. Propose a toast. Try escargot with Parmesan and fresh black pepper in cultured butter.

I can't sleep but I'm tired so.

MY grandson makes me smile. He says Papa and smiles. Papa sounds like popcorn. That's fun.

No Papa, accord, accord. He means no piano, the accordion. A cushla mine in fa. Or Danny Boy in F for you maybe.

I hope it's good news John. And thanks for the wake up call. We should never take this gift of life for granted.

Well the news is good. The problems now are related to chemo poisoning and radiation damage. But no cancer. I was really worried because I was having trouble talking and swallowing, and sometimes I can't seem to breathe. They spent an hour with me watching on a high def tv running a scope all over. Just bad swelling, almost closed up.

So moist food, and we hope not to have to get a ream job on the throat. I also got reamed because I went off drugs totally for 8 weeks. They ganged up on me 2 docs and a nurse and got my wife on their side so I'm going to some super narco specialist at the Cancer Institute. I'm to try 2 months taking what they tell me to with no arguments. I was told the pain was all over my face and that wasn't good.

My friend who played in an orchestra I sit in on was leaving for Florida tomorrow, had a stroke and is headed to a nursing home for at least 6 months. And he was a very healthy 70, never sick. Just woke up paralyzed.

I'm going to visit my son who lives in the north end now.

Glad to hear you've got the lesser of evils. Sorry to hear about your friend. That's what I worry about a stroke or heart attack suddenly, me Da had one at my age. I've been watching a show on HBO, Boardwalk Empire which other than topless women is about an Irish political machine in Atlantic City. they featured a song which I hadn't heard before and fell in love with, called Carrickfergus. I'd spent alot of time with crazy Irishmen at the Celtic Arts Center in LA, but had never heard this hauntingly beautiful tune. They also featured Crazy Blues which was a personal favorite of mine and was the first of the race records Recorded in 1920. When you mentioned Danny Boy it reminded me of this. Also I remember hearing a recording of Jan Pierce singing Macushla (not sure I spelled that right)as a boy. Well carry on and take your medicine, it beats the alternative as they say.

Carrickfergus...Pete we play and I love that song.

I wish I was in Carrickfergus.....

My wife on the flute, and I on some keyboard or other.

Someone better at it than I should do that. You need a haunting ethereal sound. t

I shall be in Ballygrant soon. But the Scottish one on Islay. Perhaps dreams do come true.

It's a sad song but very poetic, actually no sadder than Danny Boy. My daughter had Danny Boy on her karaoke and I sang it for her once but when I got to the end part she wanted me to quit - too sad. I had a friend in LA with a beautiful tenor voice who sang it beautifully. Drinking Guinness , singing songs, and telling stories and jokes in a little storefront on Hollywood Blvd. - great memories. Here's the Chieftains lyric. Some of the lyric is similar to "The Water is Wide".

I wish I was in Carrickfergus
Only for nights in Ballygrand
I would swim over the deepest ocean
Only for nights in Ballygrand
But the sea is wide and I cannot swim over
And neither have I the wings to fly
If I could find me a handy boatman
To ferry me over my love and I
My childhood days bring back sad reflections
Of happy time there spent so long ago
My boyhood friends and my own relations
Have all passed on now like the melting snow
So I?ll spend my days in this endless roving
Soft is the grass and shore my bed is free
But to be home now in carrickfergus
On the long road down to the salty sea

And in Kilkenny it is reported
On marble stone there as black as ink
With gold and silver I would support her
But I'll sing no more now till I get a drink
For I'm drunk today and I'm seldom sober
The handsome rover from town to town
Ah but I am sick now my days are numbered
Come all me young men and lay me down
Come all me young men and lay me down

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
