Anyone personally used any of the light weight Class D with switching power supplies for subs? I'm looking for an amp for a sub I built. Needs to be bridgeable and about 500/700 watts into 8 ohms bridge mono..There was a time when these amps were not recommended for subs. They couldn't keep up.I'm interested in the Crown xls1500. Can get it at MF for $340 which is a great price & it also has a built in variable xover. No matter what the price though if it doesn't do the job it's not worth buying.

John,

I started to answer earlier but was interrupted.

It's hard to go wrong with Crown. I have used them in my racks when I was doing live sound and all the better fixed installations tended to have them, too. They are just about indestructible. If MF has a decent return policy you have nothing to lose by giving it a try.

Another brand worth consideration is Peavey. I was dragged kicking and screaming to the conclusion that they are very good and cost effective. They are also American-made, if that is important to you.

HTH,

R.

I've used Crown as well years ago when they were Class AB and had a big old heavy power supply transformer. When the light weight amps first came out they were Class D with switching power supplies. They were horrible for low end especially things like kick drum. This is well documented. All the lit you now read tries to state that this has been overcome. I wonder is all.I'm still sort of laying low for now & am not in immediate need so have time to research more.

Repairin' a LOT of the Crowns the past couple years, John. Under warranty, they often blanket replace whole circuit boards, after warranty the only option is sometimes the same, although they can be repaired at component level as well, but Crown has been taken with the idea of amp networking via standard network cabling and all that jazz, my thoughts are that something that complicated is not called for just to run a subwoofer at the gig, YMMV.

QSC amps may cost a wee bit more, but I think it is worth it if you are looking for topline workhorse stuff. Often sighted in use on pro tour stuff these days.

Of course, you might find a good deal on another brand, as well, for example, I picked up a Samson awhile back and can't complain. It isn't class D, but is a fine example of mature class AB and features a toroidal power transformer which makes for a rather compact rackmount. Of course it is likely a bit heavier than the equivalent Class D with switcher, but I couldn't pass up the price...

It seems all the co. putting out these low cost low weight amps are suffering. Even Carvin that has been a good choice for those on a budget have terrible reviews.
Mac are you saying that the lightweight QSC GX series have better ratings and history then the Crown. I was originally contemplating the QSC.Both have built in xover but the Crown xover is more flexible. It's variable. Qsc is fixed at 100Hz which for a sub is were I'd set it anyway.

John,

Never used the Crown, but have a QSC PLX1804 running our small PA. Couldn't be happier. If you're looking at the GX series, you can type in your sub specs in this page and match the sub to the QSC amp.

If you decide on the QSC, PM me - I know a QSC dealer in California who might me able to give you a better price than a retailer.

Bob

My issue is limited funds.I'm looking at either the Crown or QSC.
I have an adequate amp that now powers the tops. I was looking for something just for the sub. Can't bridge the QSC GX amps.

John,

Have you considered buying used? You can get a lot of bang for your buck, and might be able to get more amp for your limited funds. Here is a link to the PSW Marketplace. There are some good deals on used gear there.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
