Olen sulle ilmaa (I am air to you)

Most likely, not many Finnish songs have been heard on this forum, but here is one smile Noel requested something in my own language. Also my vocalist Miira suggested showcasing this track, because it is already quite strange with the Asian/Bollywood style instrumentation. So here it is to baffle you smile Miira created nice oriental backing vocals and also influenced on the lyrics with many good ideas. All instruments were created with BIAB, what a versatile program smile

RealDrums: RetroPop
RealTracks:
Electric guitar #542, #1762, #660
Acoustic guitar solo #1453
Charango #2772
Electric bass #2615
Fiddle #1604
Synth #1741
Synth bass #2578
Synth horn #2747

Loops: dhol_vow_140b, Tabla-indi-120a, Bollywood_escape_115_perc_csharpminor

Vocals: Miira

Mixed in Adobe Audition 2017

Lyrics freely translated in English:

I am air to you
You think you don't have to ask for it
I'm tired in your company
You are living too full life.

I am space to you
you want to conquer every corner
you suck all my energy
and repress without me noticing.

When you step into the room,
you take oxygen, light and its rays
your presence darkens the stars and the moon
in vacuum withers the tree of life.

I hope you understand
why I'm running away.

I am air to you
if you stay by my side I get weak
I break into atoms in the wind
I cease to exist, disappear.

I am time to you
I'm too easy to consume
the hours go by fast with you
I'm not enough although I run for real.

It's not your fault I seek your company
I give you too much power to take advantage of me
I hope that even once you leave me some peace.

I hope you understand
why I'm running away
I endure you
only on small doses
only when I'm alone
I get to recover.

Hi Janne & Miira,

Well,I, for one, like this. I love experimenting with genres and sounds. The chorus really takes off with the background percussions. I hear mixes of India, Latin America, Asia and Africa. That works for me.

When I lived in Bakersfield, CA, I had a friend from Finland and loved to hear her speak Finnish. I speak German, fair French and Spanish, as well as a smattering of English - languages are fascinating to me! Music and languages have one thing in common -they both have a syntax on which to build.

Thanks for something different and a very pleasing listen.

Alan

Janne,

Ambitious and dramatic.Mira`s voice is well suited to the song and I for one love the way your songs challenge the conventions... forgetting about what styles are blended into this, I enjoyed getting carried along into "strange" Finnish mysteries.

I really liked this! Even though I didn't understand what was being said, the emotion hit just as hard - a sign of a well written song, when the music itself is what hits you! This tune is wonderfully catchy, and it's amazing all the different types of influence you can hear in this.

Thanks so much for sharing smile

Dear "jannesan"...

In my entire life, I've never heard any type of music that did not arouse my interest, or my appreciation, in some small, or large way. Music is a universal phenomenon, so, what's not to like???

I would take exception to your own use of the word "strange" to describe "Olen sulle ilmaa (I am air to you)". "Strange" has too many possibly negative associations attached to it that could give a listener the opportunity to find reasons to treat your song as something other than what it is -- music, nothing more, and nothing less. In its place, let's substitute a more complementary word, "unique". It's much more affirmative of what's different about the sound, the feel, and the impact of your song.

"Olen sulle ilmaa (I am air to you)" fascinated me simply, and precisely, because it was created out of diverse musical genres. Again, music is music, so no matter what ethnic musical influences shaped your song, the experience of listening to it is exhilarating just because of those myriad influences.

The unusual chord changes, the abrupt transitions of tempo, the ritualistic, incantational sound and style of Ms. Mira's vocal performance (as though she was casting a spell!) -- it's like you created an entirely new musical scale for your song where astrological signs replaced the typical musical notation. The choral arrangement is dramatic and mysterious in its effects.

The imaginative lyrics quite literally describe a personality so powerful as to possess the ability to "conquer every corner", "suck all my energy", and "repress without me noticing", to drain a room of its "oxygen, light and its rays", that "darkens the stars and the moon" and "withers the tree of life." They complement the shape-shifting mood and feel of the song. It's as though you're describing a sort of vampire.

At its most experimental, this what is music composition is about -- blending old and new, ancient and contemporary, the past and the present, to jar the listeners' ears, titillate their minds, and shake-up their souls.

"Olen sulle ilmaa (I am air to you)" is a heady, magical stuff. It's like music from another reality in another, possibly hidden corner of the Earth (like, Finland, perhaps? blush) , and that makes it absolutely unforgettable.

Hi Janne and Miira,

Since we're Dutch we understood the lyrics immediately, because our languages are so alike.
Just kidding laugh
This sure sound different from your usual stuff, but we find it very original!
The instrumentation and RTs are very well chosen, especially the acoustic soloist guitar.
Very nice vocals by Miira,

Rob and Anne-Marie

Man, there is a LOT happening in there. Almost a hint of gypsy jazz here and there. This has got to be the most multi-ethnic song posted here. Real “world music.” Janice repeatedly commented on the multilayers of percussion. The vocals worked well with everything.

A real showcase of BiaB on the showcase forum.

Well done.

Thanks Loren very much for your analytical and insightful comment, I truly appreciate your beautiful words, finding so much to say about my song, you really made my day smile Magical, from another reality, I'm glad to make something so unforgettable blush I really like blending many styles and instruments, going through tens of instruments just trying how they fit... and BIAB makes it so easy, thanks PG Music smile

The story is about persons who are usually nice, but somehow we get tired in their company. Really intriguing comparison to vampires, makes me smile laugh Nicely said also about Miira's vocals and choral arrangement, like casting a spell, so true, she made great work.

Janne, you have created a wonderfully complex, innovative and interesting sound here! It's deep and mesmerizing and Miira's wonderful vocal trancends the language barrier! Top level work as far as I'm concerned! Take care, Torrey.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
