45s

I loved buying and collecting 45s when I was younger and later to learn songs,
someone was assigned to "move the needle" usually back about 10 seconds
to try to get that part down just right. Talking to Bud about how most songwriters
have a lot of pieces and ideas that get left by the wayside and I remembered how
there was a time that bands and artists put an unused track on the "B" side.
They were some of the coolest songs that just didn't fit in with the album.
You might remember or even still own some of these (not the double hits on A and B.
but like the Beatles Let It Be/You Know My Name (awesome!) couldn't believe it was
them. Elton John Island Girl/ Sugar On The Floor (great ballad)
Police Every Breath You Take/ Murder By Number (played it about a thousand times)
George Harrison Bangla-Desh/ Deep Blue (my all time favorite B side.

https://youtu.be/HKiWYbpLd3Q (Deep Blue on YouTube)

and many more, I miss 45s and the little plastic spacers
Anyway, I'll get to it, thought I'd post my own 45
hope you like them or at least one
thanks for listening and commenting

Just A Kiss Away
© 2017 Kenny Leverett

Well there’s loves that come and go
Like fashion going out of style
But my heart tells me what’s real
And I’ve known it now for quite awhile

So there’s nothing you can say
To ever make me change my mind
Cause I’ve had this love for you girl
For such a long long time

Tell me that you feel it too
Cause I’m more alive
When I’m with you
I can see it hiding in your eyes
It’s just a kiss away

If the stars align tonight
Will you feel the magic in the air
If the heavens will allow
Then you’ll surely see how much I care

Tell me that you feel it too
Cause I’m more alive
When I’m with you
I can see it hiding in your eyes
It’s just a kiss away

If this love is really meant to be
Then it’s not up to you or me
Come a little closer now
It’s just a kiss away

Tell me that you feel it too
Cause I’m more alive
When I’m with you
I can see it hiding in your eyes
It’s just a kiss away

Great boppin' number with the Corvette job Kenny.

(I cheated and listened to the B Side first, sorry blush .)

I also really enjoyed the contrast you brought between the two songs. That really works well when applied to the A/B side concept.

We have quite a few of these kicking around the house. My roommate and I listen to old records on an almost nightly basis.

But back to your post --- I really like this idea. As VideoTrack said, the contrast is quite lovely, and it almost strengthens each song. I think I personally prefer A Side in this particular instance just due to my own personal taste, but both songs are equally fantastic and deserve praise!

Thanks for sharing.

Kenny,
Firstly - thanks for sending me to a George Harrison song I`ve never heard before! In our house we bought one 45 a month... 4 kids and the choice rotated, so you really had to bite ypour tongue when your sibling chose a stinker!
Back to your A side - love the melancholy the resonator brings to the tune and your vocal carries the feeling throughout with strength. Very good!
(Back for the B side later)

Hello, Kenny

This is a very nice idea.
I had also loved to buy 45s in my childhood.
A side - melancholy song and B side - rock'n'roll song.
Yes there were many records of the same combination.
Your vocals are splendid both side.
I prefer B side this time.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.

Hi Kenny,

Just listened to both songs - really cool! I somewhat prefer the "A" side. Love the slide. The "B" side says "Jerry Lee" to me all the way through. That pounding piano carries the song. Great guitar work, too! Love the idea and both songs are stellar.

About two weeks ago Di and I were having a conversation along the lines of your comments. We were talking about the generally unheard great songs on the "B" side of the 45s and what a shame they never got the attention they deserved.

A couple of our faves were:

"We Will Rock You" (Queen) - "B" side of "We Are The Champions"
"Every Day" (Buddy Holly) - "B" side of "Peggy Sue"
"Colour My World" (Chicago) - "B" side of "Beginnings" .... Our Favorite.

Super job, Kenny! Always a pleasure to tune you in.

Alan

Kenny,

WOW. WOW. WOW. You blew me away with "Just A Kiss Away".

Perfect in every way. A hit. A top level write. The lyrics is memorable. The melody even more so. SO very sing-able...

Your vocal is over-the-top good. Star material. (The harmonies are really nice, too).

The instrumentation is excellent. Quality. The harmonica solo was a surprise - and VERY tastefully done. Outstanding mix.

Outstanding everything. I can STILL hear the song in my head - with only a single listen - the sure sign of a hit. I will definitely go back for several more listens...

"Corvette" - a perfect B-side. A very clever idea!! It has that B-side feel of "the band loves this, so we hope you do, too". Again, super everything - great use of The BAND - the piano parts are exquisite. Super mix, super vocal. Will no doubt be listened to a bunch after I've worn out side A...

You are killing it, Mr. Leverett. WOW.

I enjoyed Corvette - a rocking way to 'recover" from the strong emotions of the A side. Still, have to say, Just A Kiss Away is soo good- and the way that harp break fits with the resonator is a little touch of magic I missed the first listen.

Apply outa the park great to the following:

- the concept
- the writes
- the vocals
- the arrangements
- the rt choices (dobro sounds like it played for YOU and so does the piano on Corvette)
- the mix

Man, you set the piano on fire and walked off stage. And you throw two killer songs out here in one post.

If, I could write two like that I'd milk 'em dry!

Amazing,

J&B

PS Janice is singing away on Just a Kiss and dancing away with Corvette! She says she can't stop her feet smile

Thanks VT,

I would never have posted the New Orleans Boogie, it's only about 2:10 long
but I love listening to it, glad you enjoyed.

Thanks Robert,

I'm so happy that I could turn you on to a great Harrison song. I love it

even tho it's sad.

I dig that resonator too, haven't found too many opportunities to use it

hope that you will also enjoy the B side

Kenny, both are strong songs. Like the "A" side for its completeness - lyrics, melody, the whole song is there. Like the "B" side for its energy and fun. Great concept. I used to collect 45's as a child, too. Brings back a lot of good memories!

Hey Kenny,

I also loved buying 45's back in the day and still have most of the ones I bought. And yeah, lot's of hidden treasures on the 'B' side.

Great idea to bring that concept back as part of a modern song release! I liked both songs, "Just A Kiss Away" is my favorite of the two, so a perfect 'A' side, and "Corvette" is a perfect hidden jem 'B' side.

Thanks for the link to the Harrison tune as well, I'm a fan of his but missed that one somehow.
