I konw that MGU files include melodies, but working with Realtracks (where you often use the Melody track as an instrument track) I really don't see the advantage of working with both kinds of formats anymore. Actually it's kind of annoying when you're working with a saved song, add a track on melody track, resave the song (now under a different file format) and the next day, try to open the file only to discover two identical files (with the same icon) on your hard disk, and that you have to "discover" wich one is the last one you worked on. Simplicity is the future!

Showing the file extension is one easy way. Go to folder options and check the 'show extensions for known file types' (or something close to that, depending on OS)
It'll then differentiate between the two.

And generally the MGU file is bigger, and dated later.

Yes, I know that, but it takes some time, and for users who don't have this clues (musicians and computers are not always good friends) could be a problem. The point is: are both file formats (and others, such MGX) really necessary? The existence of several file types with different extensions to represent different kind of songs was justified years ago when you could only use the melody channel for melodies, but it makes no sense today, IMO.

When things are simpler, the user experience is better.

Yeah, just 1 IV and V. Solves a host of probs. Very simple though.

I don't see this as a big deal. At first it was a quick way of seeing what was in a file.

Things have evolved and I doubt anyone would miss it.

However, I don't care really.

I must agree that I don't like it too much that the extension changes from SGU to MGU when you add a melody section or solo section or both (what is the criteria?). It does seem unnecessary.

Well, I was speaking about software, not music, John

And yes, the attention to details and user interface's optimization (which translates on better workflow for the end user) are important subjects in makng a great great software, but that's only my opinion.

It used to be worse. There used to be numbers used in the extension.

Having MGU and SGU is still useful to me. Sometimes I want the melody and sometimes not. For example, if I were to post the song, I would have to strip out the melody and soloist parts first. With a SGU copy, it's ready to go.

But I would not be upset if we had just one extension. There would have to be backwards compatibility, though. Perhaps also a utility to review and delete one of each pair of songs?

Well, in that case, the program shouldn't try to save as MGU file a song that has any realtracks on the Melody track. Since no real tracks can play melodies, that makes no sense IMO.

It may or may not have to do with the ability to import midi files which do have a melody track in most cases, and can be assigned as such. Just a guess.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
