Note that this is using an updated version of the String Quartet style, that will appear in a patch tomorrow.

This style uses 2 RealTracks w/added bass:

Style is _SYMPHON.STY

RealTracks in style: 2291:Horn Section, Rhythm SlowPopPads Ev16 065 <<- released with BiaB 2014

RealTracks in style: 2335:String Quartet, Rhythm PopHall Ev 085* <<- released with BiaB 2014, only in the BonusPak, with purchases before Dec. 31, 2013

RealTracks in Song: 1386:Bass, Acoustic, Jazz Ballad Sw 085 (Very Simple) <<-- this bass track was added, and played whole notes, by setting all chords to held chords (while other tracks were frozen)

The melody is played beautifully on fiddle by Andy Leftwich (as part of the Artist Performance Tracks with Band-in-a-Box 2014)

Peter,

That was a very impressive listen. I was so captivated that I had to let it go all the way to the end. I'm looking forward to getting the updated quartet.

I have to say that Andy's gift for melodic interpretation is outstanding. He certainly knows how to make the fiddle sing.

Regards,
Noel

Peter,

(looking forward to those strings!)

I often make an extra copy of a song and set all the chords to held chords for a big electric guitar "hit and hold" at each chord. Hadn't thought about using it for a simple bass like you did (so thanks! for that idea!!)...

To accomplish the change, I use the chord replace function:

* replaced with *... gets the majors
*m replaced with *m... gets minors
*m7 replaced with *m7...

etc., etc.

Is there an easier way to do this globally? Wondered that each time I've done it. A simple song goes fairly quickly, but anything elaborate... there's not a "Set All Chords To Held" button is there?

floyd
Thank you Peter.

This new String Quartet is going to prove a favourite for me.

Very much appreciated.

smile
Edited to compliment whoever put that track together.

It sounded fantastic and very impressive arrangement.

I'm "on the road" and limited to a laptop and its feeble audio output. I didn't really appreciate this until I put on the headphones.

I encourage everyone listening to this do the same, or send it to your best set of speakers to get the full effect.

Thanks for posting Peter!
Are we 'having fun' yet? <grin>.

LLOYD S
Hi Lloyd,

This Bluetooth connected speaker from Altec Lansing goes with me and my laptop everywhere now. I used to use a now discontinued pair of tubular Altec Lansing amplified speakers that powered from USB and plugged into the Earphone Jack of the lappy, still have them.

Either is capable of being used as Nearfield Monitors for working in the field, as well as being loud and having enough of a fullrange sound to also play along with BiaB out on the trail in motels, hotels, etc. - even with my Trumpet and another Sax player. Not for performance sound levels, of course, but in the room, works a treat.

I also tote them along to private lessons for the same reason.

The Bluetooth ones are, of course the newest, I dig it, but you also may peruse the 'net at places like Amazon and Ebay for the older tuhular "BX1220" speakers, there may still be some around and the prices may be a lot lower due to the fact that Altec discontinued them.

Either model fits into my laptop shoulder bag along with the PGMusic USB drive, laptop, little Bluetooth mouse, Headphones, etc.

The Bluetooth model I use is called, "The Jacket" and the link below is to Altec's product page and video about it. Works with anything that has Bluetooth, too, not just the Lappy.

Check 'em out.

Me, too! Electric piano blends well, too.

I'm fairly certain I saw an option for this exact feature in the 2014 release. Not a button, but a "set range of chords" to sort of command. It'll be a great time saver for me.

Artist Performance Tracks? Are these pre made melodies we can select from? Are they customisable to make any melody from them? Or am I way off?

Thanks.
Paul

Thanks Mac, but being a newbie to BIAB 2013 with limited experience I'm still none the wiser? What are Artist Performance Tracks? OR is it the ability to play along and add your own recordings to BIAB like you would through a DAW?

Edit; the more I think about it, it would seem that BIAB 2014 now allows you to record your own audio along with selected tracks like RealTracks rather than BIAB producing melody for you.
10. What new features are there in the latest version of Band-in-a-Box for Windows?

With each version upgrade, we add many great new features. With Band-in-a-Box 2013 we've added a new MIDI DXi/VST synth (SampleTank) and have added some great High Quality (“Hi-Q”) MIDI Sounds. These Hi-Q sounds make the MIDI tracks (both regular and MIDI SuperTracks), sound much better. We’ve added Performance Tracks – Artist’s Performances on the Melody track, to showcase the Band-in-a-Box RealTracks demos playing along to an artist performing the melody. These are great for listening or for learning-from-the-Pros (since notation/tab shows for the performances). "Print to PDF” to save your printouts directly as a PDF file, or share your arrangements with the added SoundCloud.com integration and DropBox integration. There are a number of RealTracks enhancements including "Pick best soloist RealTracks" that shows you the soloists that best match the genre, tempo, and feel of your song, and many more.

BB2013 is when they came out, there are more added in the New BB2014 and that fiddle melody will be one of them.

Of course, the Melody played is the Melody you get, with these.

For more info, Type Artist Performance Sets into the main website Search at the top of these pages (NOT THE Forum Search slot...).

Peter,

1. Beautiful!

2. Peter, put your way back hat on: Did you EVER hear this in your head THAT day you set out, with your band of merry men, to create BIAB?

Larry
That sounds fantastic. I'm very excited about using the strings.
What a beautiful arrangement and performance!
Wow! I've been waiting for strings. It can't be long before we get the entire Vancouver Phil playing RealTracks to use with ballads, etc. Thank you Peter and crew and BIAB.
Peter, what a great sound. It gave me an inspiration to take the melody I know so well as Danny Boy and change this around a bit. To my surprise, I find that I can change the style somewhat and get many options. I saved the original Performance in a separate folder(Performance Tracks Mixed). I did keep the original style from 2014. Working from the original, I started by changing the bass to a very simple picked RealTrack [518]cleaned up the bottom end, plus a basic jazz drum holding John Jarvis [2024] on piano in a rather nice pattern IMHO. I selected Brett [2200]on nylon country @ 85 bpm and assigned that to Strings. Next Paul Franklin [2002]Country [bluesy] @ 85 bpm to soloist. Keeping the fiddle up front most of the time with Brett and Paul adding their usual stellar performance to the mix. Which, by the way is totally arranged in BB. I would like to be able to submit this file in a special forum section created for myself and other forum members to showcase how easy it is to create an arrangement within BIAB. My time spent was maybe 30 minutes. Others will follow suite. Lots of songs are public domain. Please consider this-----Leon
Agreed that this sounds good!

I can't find the style, and am wondering what I'm doing wrong?

I just updgraded to UltraPlusPak 2014 and installed the update as well.

I can't find the style and have tried to look for it manually and trying to filter "__SYMPHON.STY"

Any help will be appreciated.

There is is a 'User Showcase' section under "General Discussion"
Flatfoot, That us true, but it is for original music created by forum members. I do not compose. There are lots of songs from the past which are public domain. Loved by us older folks, smile and not write protected. The existing forum rules forbid users like myself from sharing their talents. The songs selected for the Artist Performances are possible examples.-----Leon
Leon, that would be a great tutorial. Redo what you did on a youtube video.

I don't really know a way around the copyright issue. Even if a tune is in the Public Domain, wouldn't that cause the administrators to have to research every tune to determine if it truly was copyright free.

It even get's complicated with public domain songs as artists will copyright their arrangement of a public domain tune. I know this has happened to House of the Rising Sun. Lot's of landmines and snakes in the grass out there.

I can't think of a solution, I would love to see what was done here and what you did as a tutorial video.
Post the song on Youtube, which has their own licensing system.

Point the forum post to the youtube video, or use the Video button at top of Reply screen to embed it right in the forum post.

Thanks all for the reply's. I have not entered the u-tube crowd although that would be an option.-----Leon

Leon, read the rules carefully.

"The songs must be originals, no copyrighted or "cover" songs. You must have all of the rights to the songs."

The first part says "original" .... the second part says " all the rights".

If you take a public domain song and record it with your style, the requirements of both lines are met, in my humble opinion, since no copyright infringement exists with public domain songs and no one holds the exclusive rights to that song anymore.

You must be careful however, because some older songs are still covered by copyright. Many "Christmas songs", especially those from church hymnals written in the 1800's or earlier are all PD now..... a quick glance at the date of creation will tell you what you need to know. Go to the Library of Congress web site to figure out the length of copyright afforded the song originally since the length of protection has changed numerous times though the decades.

Another option is to purchase a license for the particular cover tune as some here and in other forums have done. The Harry Fox Agency can fix you right up all nice and proper and totally legal.... for a small fee.

Original and public domain.... good to go....anything else, not so much.

Hope that clarifies it a bit.
I hadn't heard this yet.

Peter, this particular song means a lot to me. My mom used to sing it to me; my late grandmother used to sing it to me. (The "Danny Boy" version, of course.)

This is a simply awesome arrangement. By chance, is there somewhere we can download an .MGU file? If there's a link on this thread, I've missed it.

Awesome.

ETA: Ahhh. Just saw how to duplicate it. Excellent!
Hi Ton,

I agree. Wonderful song, with so many memories.

Glad to hear you how you duplicated it ( by loading in the Artist Perormance File, and changing the style to _Symphony.sty

We'll get a version of that file uploaded.
I can't wait to work with these new tools.

Merry Christmas,
How does one get the strings then? A search for _Symphon.sty on my bb directory finds it not? Is it downlaodable or buyable?
Hi Arbogast
Have you found the style yet?
What a beautiful arrangement too! And Andy is wonderful. Great PERFORMANCE.
