I would like to import an existing midi file and just add lyrics to make a Karaoke file.
Then I would like to save it as it was so it sounds like the original midi with lyrics added.

You could start with File > Open Special > ... Open Midi File (or just use F7).

It's always good practice to save a file with a new name. That way you can always go back to the original and start again if you need to.
