I'm doing a lot of editing of some RealDrums tracks, because I want fills and endings 'n' stuff to sound like they belong with the rest of the drums. And I was wondering....

a] Are all the RealDrums recorded from the same set, same miking, etc., or do they vary a lot? Not, e.g., EDM or electronic sets, but your basic jazz or rock combo.

b] Is there any chance we could get a small set of 24-bit individual drum hits? I don't need articulations or anything -- just a good solid whack on the various drums and cymbals. I can probably go through and mine them myself if necessary, but if you have 'em at hand it would make editing (and constructing new) tracks to sound like the originals much easier.

c] Has this all been done already and I just don't know about it? Wouldn't be the first time....

A) Same drum set used to make RealDrums? Don't know but doubt it as PG Music has used several drummers from several different locations over the years. Since musicians normally provide the instrument I assume different drum sets have been used.

B) Single hits available? Most RealDrums audio tracks include single hits (also called shots) at the end of each file. Import the wma, wav or aiff file into your editor or daw. Advance near the end of the file, identify the single hits and copy them into a new audio track. Split and label the single hits you need.

C) 24 bit files available? No. RealDrums were recorded as stereo audio files at 16 bits / 44.1 KHz.

PS, forum member, Pipeline, created a soundfont from the single hits of one of the RealDrums for use with the Plogue Sforzando sampler included with Band-in-a-Box.

A. no, not that I know of
B. no, not that I know of
C. no, not that I know of

The drum samples are often available at the end of the files used to generate them.
Usually not 24 bit samples (many times) .. but they are there.
I have WMA files available to work with; if you are using the Audiophile version you may have better samples available (but I still doubt you'll find 24 bit).

I tried to encourage other users to make SFZ drum kit files (for sForzando or any other sample player) using the various recorded RealDrums files, but had little response.

/Charlie; Pipeline added to the sForzando Realdrums effort? I want a link

rharv,

You successfully managed to encourage me. I'm just waiting for a spare day or so to get working on it. My thoughts were that if I could get together an SFZ file, then I'd be able to use some of the drum tracks from the tracks PG Music have in their midi styles. This could open the door to a whole new world for me!

I'll get back to you when I get it happening!

Regards,
Noel

Yes it keeps getting asked since 1851.

I'm trying to get PG to fix some issues with Biab so you can have your song in Biab, move the drums to the audio track and then in another instance of Biab you can load a RealDrum track from the Drums folder set the Master tempo for it, change the BB tempo to your song then you can copy sections from one drum track to the other.

More from other posts:

If all the RealDrums have been recorded on the same kit in the same room PG should be able to make a drum sampler with mixer and FX for each drum/cymbal and master, to create the custom bits we need in the actual realdrum track.
If you open a txt file in the Drums folder then set the tempo in realband first of the wav/wma drums then drag it in you will see the shots at the end, the listing will be at the end of the txt:

With a PG RealDrum Sampler being use with a midi track it could also be used to generate up a drum phrase in wav, you could highlight the Bar/s/beats of an existing RealDrum track, Generate > Drum fill/solo, a DrumRiff window will come up and let you choose from midi drum phrases as well as being able to add your own midi phrases to the list/categories, RB will then write the midi to wav into the RealDrum track, the PG MultiDrumRiff Sampler will come up allowing you to mix/preview the levels before writing to track. When you click the Preview button it will play the selected midi through the PG RealDrums Sampler/mixer.

If think want something like this go the the well and pray http://www.pgmusic.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=postlist&Board=9&page=1

You can download a kit, look and see how many wav samples are in it, using the hits at the end of RealDrum track is too limited, Peter needs to get some of the guys out the back and record some samples, as long as they do use the same kit n room.

Bob please accept my apology for attributing the Realdrums soundfont creation to the wrong person. I must have encountered a gross memory failure. blush

By-the-way, I'm Jim, the good looking one. Charlie is the smart one! grin

When I need single shot drums, I go to one of my drum synths and program some midi. Sampled drums sound awesome.

Now that's funny right there.. sorry I got you and Charlie mixed up.

smile Always a good time here in the forums. Many thanks for all of your helpful info. (GuitarHacker, I do indeed have LOTS of drum samples, as well as BFD3. I should probably just spend an afternoon cruising samples and auditioning which ones sound closest to BIAB's. I just thought there might already be a solution to this out there.)

Again, thanks, guys!

Jim: the "shots" are intended to be shots using the whole drum kit, and often have at least a kick and/or snare and/or cymbal or high-hat. I want the individual drum sounds. smile

This would be nice moving forward.
Do it for all realdrum recordings.
It's not hard, just record each drum separately once or twice, put it at the end of the RD tracks.
We could take it from there.

Isn`t this better achieved by using SuperTracks, which use MIDI, but are a transcription off of the related real style?
I`ve found, that when using different RealDrums, I get differnet sounds, often even audible cut offs in ringing cymbals.

The sounds of the recordings vary. They have different artists, and my guess is, they use different drum sets. Also the recording / mixing parameters cannot be reproduced over the years.

I love RealDrums, but given up on them when it comes to individul kicks (accents) and more sophisticated drum arrangements. That`s when I try to find a matching super track and tweak it.

Sandra, that is why I use MIDI drums also. Drums are one of the instruments MIDI does extremely well IMHO.
