I've recently installed BIAB 2017 462 in a school lab - Mega Pak upgrade from BIAB 2013.

It was working well. Today when I opened a file on one of the computers, created in BIAB 2013, it took a while to load and then crashed. The file was a really simple 8 bar song - midi style. Since then, I have not been able to access the 'Band styles - best real styles' from the style picker. Numerous restarts didn't help, I then updated to 463 - this didn't fix the problem. Everything else works, but if I try to open this menu, it hangs - not responding. Clicking anywhere then causes a crash, regardless of how long you wait.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a fix?

Thanks

Sounds like that particular file was somehow corrupted, taking the system with it.

If I was you, I's just recreate the file and live happy ever after.

Thanks, yes I don't care about the file but I do want to access the real styles menu from the style picker. This menu no longer works.

Welcome to the forums.

Just checking, do you have the license for school use?

If it's a standard purchase of BIAB, it will only run three installations and, as I understand it, these three installs cannot run at the same time. (The premise is that a user has three computers the s/he runs the program on - one at home, one performing, etc. - and so PG Music permit three installs.)

The problem sounds like it might be one that you need to contact PG Music Support. Contact information is under the 'Support' link at the top of this webpage.

Yes, we have a licence for 18 copies - the other computers are fine. It's only a problem on the computer that opened the old file.

A couple of thoughts that might help...

Before doing the below, save your settings (the option is found under the 'Option' menu).

1. Try running "Return to factory settings". It's under the 'Options' menu. Select the upper option first. If that doesn't fix the problem, try the lower option.

2. If neither of the above fix the problem, rename the files "intrface.bbw" and "mysetup.dk" to something like "intrface.old" and "mysetup.old". These files are in the \bb folder. (Note the spelling of 'intrface' - no 'e' nor 'a'.) This is the ultimate version of "return to factory settings" and fully clears BIAB. When the program is restarted it will create new versions of the above files.

Lastly, it sounds like the file might have been corrupt. I suggest opening it in Realband and then saving it as an MGU/SGU file with a new name. I've found that doing this often has a positive effect.

Thanks very much, I'll try your suggestions. We have lots of files that were made in the 2013 version, I'm hoping this isn't going to be an issue when students start opening old files.

Cheers

I've used files from all versions since 2006 with the present BIAB and they work for me.

Every once in a while, it seems that a corrupt file arises. I have no idea why. It's been very rare for me.... just a couple of times in 11 years. I'm a heavy user of BIAB, too.

Let us know how you go!

Unless there was a corruption in that particular file, there should be no problem loading old files. I still load files from almost 20 years ago.

I would try the "return to factory settings" to see if that works. If not, I vaguely remember that there is another file you can delete that forces a complete rebuild of StylePicker, but I can't remember what that is. Perhaps one of the PGMusic folks could help here, or just send a request to support.

Thanks for the info on renaming the files, that worked.

This is just an update in case the problem happens to someone else - lab environment. The same thing kept happening with old files - lots of crashes this week and lots of renaming of the intrface and mysetup files (anything created in BIAB 2017 was ok). This only happened if you tried to load real styles. The issue was related to our new server, when the Broadcom NIC driver was updated on the server, the problem was resolved. The software is installed locally but the students files are on the server.

Thanks once again for the info on renaming files.

Thanks for the update. That's handy to know.

When you say "student files are on the server", Does this mean that the Realtracks and Realdrums are on the server?

No, all of our software including the real tracks have been installed on the computers. The students just save their work to their folder on the server and it's also where I share files with them. That's why it was a weird problem to solve. Guitar Pro 7 (also new) was affected too.

Everything else was fine - (we have a lot of software installed), so that's why I thought it was an issue with the new versions of BIAB and GP7 - students don't have admin rights so sometimes this can be a problem, but in this case admin accounts were affected too.

Anyway, I'm glad it's sorted, thanks for your help.
