what do the bracketed numbers in the instrument column mean

The number represents what General Midi instrument patch or program number the audio RealTrack replaces.

For example, in the screenshot you provided (thanks for the screenshot as it helped a lot) the audio RealTracks replace MIDI patch number 26.

As you can see from +++ THIS +++ list, program # 26 is named Steel String Guitar which is one of 16 programs in the General MIDI Guitar group of instruments.

The 128 instrument names are part of the General MIDI standard. General MIDI 2, abbreviated as GM2, adds an additional 128 instrument names.
