Hi all
W10 update 1809 a word of warning!

After a spot of bother with W10 updates I thought I would tell you what I have found out.
It appears according to multiple sources that windows updates is not quite what it seems, there is a difference between automatic and check for updates manually that you may not Know.

Assuming you have Automatic updates set .
If you check by settings / update & security you will normally see you are up to date last checked on this assumes you are indeed up to date.
This means you have all, the ready for general release updates.

However if you click on check for up dates you may well find there are some.
Be warned these are considered to be early releases. (beta)

The problem is it will now download them and try to install them
It may be ok it may fail or it may install with bugs, if it fails during installation it will unpick itself and roll back to your original version.
If it installs with bugs you have got it and would have to uninstall it manually or restore to an earlier point.
Problem with that is there wont be any earlier restore points if the update is one of the big 6 monthly features up dates as it removes them all as they would be incompatible with the new version.
I found all this out by checking for updates as I had not been offered the W10 new October 1809 features update,
The reason I now know, it is not ready for general release until later this month pos Tues onwards,
As for me well
Installed 1809 on my 2 older machines long job up to 2 hrs
Ok with but usual problems with changing my default sound device and finding other computers on the network but all working now.
On my latest HP all in one it did not install and rolled it self back to 1803 that’s the April 2018 update , this is due to incompatibility to Intel Display Audio. Microsoft are aware of this and have blocked the update from some pcs due for fix Tues 9 Oct.

I guess the moral to all of this is don’t manually check for updates wait for the automatic general release version .assume you allow automatic updates.
This is a pain if you want to check Microsoft updates for drivers etc at any time.
I can only hope if there are any it will tell me on automatic when they are approved,
If you Google w10 1809 feature update problems you may think twice about doing it early.

Thanks for posting this Mike. I was just getting ready to manually search for and load the update on my computer. Seems like with every new update, my computer has some issues with older "unofficial" drivers that I have to use especially my Roland synths. Had some time today so thought I might give it a go, but after reading your thoughts guess I'll hold off till the general release.

I guess I'm lucky. I installed 1809 before I saw the warning. All of my files are saved to an external drive. So far I haven't detected any deleted files. Keeping my fingers crossed.

As always, I did a complete disk image before installing the update. I also do this when I install or update any app.

Fortunately I had no problem, but if I did, with a complete image, I could have restored the HD to it's pre-update condition, OS and all.

I have windows updates deactivated in services, however it seems that somehow windows resets this to manual again.

But you can switch it off permanently using gpedit.msc, a lot of doingz however: how to switch windows updates off

So i installed this: windows-10-update-switch , and somehow mine is version 2, i don't remember were i found it. Never switched back on since by Windows ... F

I started a Win 10 Fall Update thread in the Tech S.O.S. forum a week ago and updated it with the announcement it was being pulled. That forum is specifically for non music, non PG products discussions.

Hi Bob

Sorry for the cross posting on this subject .
I didn’t notice that we even had a Tech sos forum.
I will have to pay more attention.
Wrist duly smacked!!

Haha, not exactly a wrist slap, just a comment and there's yet another bug reported yesterday I just saw concerning the update "possibly" turning off your audio and I just posted that link. Isn't that nice, suddenly no sound. Great.

Regardless of where is the right place to post...

I read today that only those who requested a Windows update (as opposed to Microsoft pushing one on us) had the problem of the deleted files.

A all the way for years, except for one Mac.

Mac has their own headaches about updating OS versions. They might even be more likely to break software by updating than Microsoft. I'm on High Sierra, and BIAB for Mac runs beautifully.

A for me, followed closely by C (never B cry What were they thinking? )

A for me, but only using Stardock's StartMenu to give me better control over my start menu (more Win7 like). Then C, as I am very comfortable with Windows 7. I went through both Windows 8 and 8.1, but really hated them. It was to Windows 10 what Windows Vista was to Windows 7.

I liked Windows XP, but much prefer being able to operate in a 64-bit environment (Windows XP 64-bit never really got off the ground and broke a lot of applications). But for 32-bit processing it was rock solid. I still run it as a virtual machine, but not very often. Between my two desktops running Windows 10 Pro and my laptop running Windows 7 Pro (because under Windows 10, I can't get the proper video drivers - thanks HP! - otherwise, it would be on Windows 10 also).

Funny everybody complains about windows 8. Bought a laptop with 8 enterprise 64bit already on it, and upgraded it to 8.1 almost directly. Never had to repair or reinstall it for 4 years now. Use classicshell as with Windows 10, and of course only manually installed the recommended security updates.

Again i had a serious Winwar 10 battle yesterday with stuttering USB audio, installers complaining that they did not have enough permissions, or access restrictions whatever, while running with the 'hidden' administrator account even so. Ended with loading an older image backup. F.

Windows 7 for me was continuous conflicts with permissions. F
