I am looking for a VST or VSTi where I can get bass notes (played on a midi keyboard) to growl as in "Footstompin' Music" by Grand Funk Railroad. Advice appreciated!

Spectrasonics' Trillian VST can do that, easy. Check out the first demo on this page: https://www.spectrasonics.net/products/trilian-audio.php

You could probably get a similar growl out of other bass guitar sounds by adding my favourite saturation/distortion plugin, Soundtoys' Decapitator to the signal chain, but Trillian can do it right out of the box.
