I just purchased a Scarlett 2i2 and I can't seem to get it set up correctly. I either get Left in/left out or right in/right out. Is there any way to get left in/ stereo left and right out? This works okay through Ableton, but not through RB. This is direct monitoring through headphone out. Also, it only shows left or right input and left or right output through the meters. There is obviously something I can't lay my hands on.

In Prefs-Audio tab

What is Input channel for MONO tracks drop down selection set to?
It should be 1+2 (2 Tracks) if you want to record both left and right.

Or right click the desired track and select 'Stereo Audio' as the track type to record both channels on one stereo track.

EDIT
after rereading your post, I may have misunderstood the question-
The panning of the playback in realtime is a function of the sound device.
RB panning doesn't work until the track actually contains the data.
I'm not familiar with the Focusrite mixer but there should be a way to pan the input toward center for monitor mix while recording.

I use the left in for most of my guitar and vocals.... be sure it's set to MONO.

The interface is a "stereo " interface in that it has 2 mono channels that are assignable. If using only one side... set it to mono and all should be good. You should then hear it from both speakers.

EDIT: THE INFORMATION BELOW PERTAINS TO THE
SCARLETT 2i4 NOT THE SCARLETT 2i2

I LEFT IT RATHER THAN DELETING IT BECAUSE
IT MAY BE USEFUL TO SOMEBODY WHO IS THINKING
OF BUYING THE 2i4, OR WHO ALREADY HAS IT AND
CAN'T ACCESS THE 2nd SET OF OUTPUTS IN RB
-------------------------------------------

Another thing to plug into the equation:

This device has one stereo input, and two stereo outputs , which makes a total of 6 jacks. RB sees them similar to the way it sees multiple MIDI ports. (each set of ins and outs can be assigned separately to tracks)

Things that can go wrong:

1) you aren't using an ASIO driver... (without ASIO, RB only sees one of the stereo in-out sets)

AUDIO SETUP USING MME

Note that when using MME drivers, when you right click on a track to assign the tracks output , you only get one option:

AVAILABLE OUTPUTS USING MME DRIVER

2) Even if you are using an ASIO driver, in your audio driver setup you need to highlight BOTH sets of IO options, or they won't be enabled and show up in your list of output options

AUDIO SETUP USING ASIO

After switching to ASIO and selecting both sets of ports, you will have an extra assignable audio output in your right click track menu:

AVAILABLE OUTPUTS USING ASIO DRIVER

3) even if everything else is setup right, you could still get your cables mixed up and have one cable attached to IO set A, while the other cable is attached to IO set B. In such a case, no combination of settings would ever give you a stereo out, because you can't assign both sets of outputs to the same track.

Hope this provides some help. Its a great little device, very useful if you need to route different tracks to different outputs.

Check the specs on this interface my friend. I think you may have this interface confused with another larger one.

http://us.focusrite.com/usb-audio-interfaces/scarlett-2i2/key-features

It has only 2 inputs and 2 outputs. It has 2 preamps and no mention anywhere that I saw that the inputs or outputs are stereo. Notice the setup diagram is showing mono inputs.

Single guitar in one (mono) single mic in the other (mono) and the stereo stage piano is shown routed into both channels to allow "stereo" .

Outputs on the rear are clearly marked "Left" and "Right".

edit:

This interface is very close to the one I have, the Focusrite SAFFIRE. The biggest difference between mine and the Scarlett 2i2 is that the Saffire does in fact have 8 unique programmable outputs on the back side. Inputs are the same. Physically, mine has 4 inputs but you can only use one out of the two for each channel at a time.

It's a great little interface. Certainly, use the ASIO drivers with it. Be sure to choose the correct mono input side and not the STEREO input.

Oops! You're right... I just looked at mine and it's a 2i-4

sorry for the confusion. (Thanks for the brain-nudge, Herb)
