Posted By: John Conley Re: Obama Re-Elected! - 11/07/12 04:57 AM
Oh, I finally got it. They guy who gets the most votes does not win. The guy who comes 2nd out of 2 wins. So some votes counted more than others. Weird. They should try that in NASCAR. LOL.

I guess we have weird politics in Canada in that the Queen passes the laws, but if it were not for good old England Canada would not be Canada at all.

Whatever. I just try and stay out of it all.

I am just happy that Obama won. I am all for this national health care. There are so many people that can’t even afford to go to the doctor when they need it. My brother worked very hard all his life and is now running into a lot of heath issues and needs that healthcare. Also, I spoke to a man from Canada that was for Obama. He said that he had lived in Canada before for most of his younger life and he said and I quote! No matter what people tell you about the healthcare; well, everybody loves it. This is our chance in the U.S. to step outside of our comfort zone and try something new. I know that there are a lot off opposing opinions out there but they are entitled to their opinion and I am entitled to mine. I am not looking to get into it with anyone so I would appreciate it if you anyone would keep the roar to a minimum. Thanks I am happy that Obama won...

Yes. It is stretched considerably from time to time, but partisan politics is generally considered inappropriate.

Since this is an off topic forum, most things can be discussed IMO

Here some interesting lyrics to a song:

America you’re too young to die
You’re just a baby still
You’re tearing at my heart it makes me cry.
Sometimes I hurt all over
When I think about this world we’re in
What this world will be when you no longer try.
America I’m hurting for you
Wishing I could change it for you
America you’re too young to die.

Looks like Obama won the popular vote, too. Though it doesn't matter because of the electoral college outcome -- I still think it is important that the president wins the popular vote, too (no matter which candidate you wanted to win).

If that is why you are happy that Obama won, then you shouldn't be happy. We don't have national health care. We don't even have national health insurance. We have an insurance reform plan going into effect that increases the risk pool by requiring everyone to be covered by some kind of health insurance even if they have to buy it themselves.

I know that. It is better that everybody has insurance. I have a friend from Canada that mentioned to me yesterday that; no matter what anyone says this healthcare that is being put into place will help everyone. We don't know what the future holds. Everybody in Canada loves it and we probably will also.

The Electoral College business I studied in Political Science class, but it's an oddity. We have lots too. A few weeks will go by and the new topic will be something else.

And Bruce can go back to being just Bruce and not canvassing. That's an interesting word, they used to put up canvass signs where people walked and talk to the voters. Or so I read. England. Way back.

We will not see the type of national health care that Canada has in our lifetime. Never happen. Medicine is a business. A big business. Obama can say whatever he thinks you want to hear to get your vote. Nobody makes him stick to his empty promises. They only need to get you to drink the kool aid twice and then can't run again. Apparently you bought it.

Ryszard, you were looking for a button to report posts to the mods? We do have just such a button. It's the second from right in the list of Post Extras, at the bottom of each post.

I use it frequently to report spam to the Moderators. Or the first post by someone who is selling something. Or Asian Escorts in Canada, whatever they are. Or, less frequently, personal attacks.

Drinking Kool-Aid is a very condecending term that implies that no one could have an intelectually valid reason for thinking differently than the speaker. The very reason that our government is malfunctioning is that no one respects the other side as having arrived at their opinion through anything other than mindlessness.

It was that and also to help the small states since every one gets two senators. That makes an invididual's vote in a small state count more than one a large state.

The old South also got more representation in congress because it got white representatives based on 3/5's of the slaves population as well as all the white.

Absolutely. Everybody needs healthcare. Saying that one wants to "opt" out is like saying they can "opt" out of national defense.

We've had socialized medicine up til now. People with insurance end up paying for people without. Obama just wants more people to at least pay something.

I was pleased that we’d ALMOST made it through this election cycle without having a political discussion on the forum. I’ve participated in them here before, but now I try to discourage them.

Besides being against the forum rules, they’re also a colossal waste of time. Even if tempers don’t flare up, nothing that any of us say will change any hearts or minds.

So if Obama was your guy, … congratulations! If Romney was your guy, … get over it. The election is FINALLY over and we don’t have to watch those ridiculous campaign commercials for a while.

FWIW, I’m not saying elections don’t matter, because they obviously do. I voted a couple of weeks ago in early voting. When the next election rolls around, I’ll go vote again if I’m able.

In the meantime, I don’t feel compelled to spout my beliefs and annoy those around me. They don’t want to hear my opinion any more than I want to hear theirs.

No, drinking the kool aid is a term meaning "blindly following even if you have no real reason other than everybody else is doing it". You think those people who followed Jim Jones to (literally to death) had an intellectually valid reason to follow him and belong to his cult?

In this case, draw your own conclusion about the amount that ethnicity contributes.

That is exactly my point. You are saying that people taking the opposite view from you do it because they are like the followers of Jim Jones. Mindless followers. I can assurwe you that as much as you would like to believe that, it just isn't so and its insulting for you to say it.

I can't believe that you even had the nerve to type that but it speaks volumes. Not much way to respond to that kind of thinking so I'll just let it be.
Posted By: eddie1261 Re: Obama Re-Elected! - 11/08/12 12:44 AM
So every voter decided who they'd vote for based solely on issues and nothing else? Nobody voted blindly based on anything else? Democrats didn't vote for the democrat even if the democrat is Satan himself? Republicans who vote for the republican just because he is a republican? Do you believe that every voter did research, weighed both sides and made an informed decision about who would be the best man to regenerate the economy, to lure jobs back from foreign shores, to get kids to go to school, to make an effort to put an end to the drug epidemic, to bring our troops home from a war we should have been out of long ago as was promised by the victorious candidate in 2008?

How many people did not vote for Kennedy because he was Catholic? How many people did not vote for McCain because his running mate was a woman? He didn't learn from Mondale who pretty much surrendered when he picked Geraldine Ferraro as his running mate? Whether she was qualified or not, was the world ready for a female president in 1984? (I know she was selected to run for vice president, but the vice president is one heart attack away from being president.)

If it was a pristine process, there wouldn't be the "clueless" vote who pick their candidate by buying into his lies about how much money he is going to put in their pockets. I have been voting since age 21 (1972) and every year both candidates promise they are going to lower taxes. My taxes have NEVER gone down since I started voting, so literally, the candidates lied to us.

But you go on believing that everybody voted for their choice for only the right reasons. Santa will be here in a couple of months, too.

Hehe. Good one John. In that election, I think all 4 of them were "knuckleheads".

That was the only presidential election since I was 18 where I didn't vote. Regardless of who won, ... America loses.

I decided not to participate in that farce.
Posted By: rockstar_not Re: Obama Re-Elected! - 11/08/12 04:11 AM
I voted a write-in, Joseph Schriner - same guy I have voted for in the last 3 elections. www.voteforjoe.com

Didn't promise me anything, seems to work his brain in a similar way that I do, and isn't at the beck and call of the joke of our political system 2 party farce that we now have. The founding fathers didn't imagine this - not saying that they were right about everything - but the endless vilification of 'the other side' wasn't at the heart of politics at that time; the other side was across the ocean.

I would write in Thomas Friedman, the guy who wrote "The World Is Flat". We need an economist to dig us out of this, not a smooth talking politician who wins votes with charisma. If you haven't read that book, you should.

Yes, I have read his book, and it IS great. I didn't mean to impugn Friedman, I read his column all the time. I just wanted to make a joke about liberals "all looking alike."

As far as "teaching economics," Wiki writes: "Friedman taught a class in economics at his alma mater Brandeis University in 2006..." Well, my daughter (a journalist) got a Master's from the London School of Economics, and she's no economist, I promise you. She asked me recently, "Dad, what's an index fund?"

Since you liked "The World is Flat," you may be interested in Fareed's newly revised book, "The Post-American World; Release 2.0".

Hello: I don't know much about the new act that is going to be going into effect. I do know that this may help millions of other people that don't have healthcare. I myself do! "All of the forums except for the Off Topic forum are for discussions of PG Music products only. The Off Topic forum is used for MUSIC-RELATED discussions that aren't about PG Music products. Please keep all your posts as constructive as possible."

Obviously, this rule could be subject to some interpretation. I'm a firm believer in civility and helping when I can. I really appreciate all the help that I've personally received on the PG Music Forums. I agree with Mario that it would probably be prudent if we steered away from religious and political discussions. I have seen what has happened on some other music forums even when there have been sections dedicated to such discussions. We have a choice to avoid "insults and hard feelings" simply by refraining from discussing religion and politics. That's just my opinion and I certainly don't consider myself as part of the "forum police". That is the function of the moderators. YMMV

Who cares who won. It'll be more of the same.

Let me step on my music related soapbox:

Any cat who plays for a living is dammed.

On side A, a trumpet player with fast fingers picks his pocket and gives it to the A&R exec in the booth [who has enough loot to never dirty his hands] in exchange for a promise that he'll get him gigs down the road.

The B-side features the deep sax solo of his split being funneled to the bass player for lessons to learn some new licks when in actuality he is just too lazy to refine his chops.

The B-side was the hit this time around. That'll anger the producers [especially if the A&R dude has to pay a cover charge to see the band] and they'll hire a new audio engineer the next time.

What we need is a NEW studio. One that looks out 4 ordinary cats. You know, the vast majority of us who are not major label honchos or slackers.

Did any of that make sense?

YMMV
