Just because it says sweet Jesus doesn't mean it's about sweet Jesus.

They are probably not as innocent as they look.

Yes, it was a big hit for them back in the day, maybe their only hit? Used to hear it on the radio all the time in the 70s.
It made the #8 spot in the Rolling Stone 15 greatest Stoner Songs of all time list :

Their cover of Jackson Browne's "Rock Me On The Water" was nice.
Love the vinyl crackle in this video! Probably NOT a plugin...
(I think I still have that record in a closet somewhere)

If not Jesus, were they possibly singing about Mary??
Mary Jane?
I loved these singers.
Where can I buy the entire collection of this man named Lawrence Welk?

Perhaps Johnny Zell (forum member) could weigh in on this, as a former Lawrence Welk trumpeter.

That was my mom's favorite show.... and no, she had no clue about the meaning of a "toke".
Brewer and Shiply were more convincing that they knew the meaning. I mean, just look at them!
