I always liked the idea of talking to relatives and friends no longer in this world.
One day maybe.
Oh and A Merry Christmas.

There are ghosts © 2023 Vic Arnold
V1
There's a silver haired old mother, sitting in a fireside chair,
gazing at the embers with a teary, distant stare.
I wonder what she's seeing in the flickering of the flames.
Coming through the light ...
In passion or in shame ...
There are ghosts in this valley and tonight they're her's to name.
Ch.
There are ghosts in this valley
but they show no ill intent.
They're the guardians of memories back in time.
Stepping stones across a river
that lead to our old friends
or the troubled, broken dreams we left behind.
V2
There's a track through the brambles where we played with our toy guns
in imaginary battles that somehow we always won.
Then came the time to put an end to all those childish things ...
Marching off to war ...
to feel the bullet sting ...
There are ghosts in this valley but tonight again, they'll win.
Ch.

Vic, I really like this one.
Great vocal, harmonies, and lyrics.
Great instrumentation and mix.
This is one of my favorites from you.

Vic, super tune, strong write and performance! Love the philosophical musings of the narrator and the thin veil between ghosts and memories. That's really cool. You remind me of Warren Zevon in your delivery on this one. He's one of my favorites, or was. Of course, he's a ghost too now. Anyway, LOVED IT! Hope you and yours have a Merry Christmas!

Thoughtful write and arrangement. Moody and effective.

Thank you DC.
Warren was clever. I’d never heard of him until about 3 years ago, then I heard the one about the headless Thompson gunner. Brilliant.
Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Best to you and yours for the holidays.

Yep, my great-grandma & I are still best friends. My writing partner of 40 years still gives me advice although he's gone for 11 years now.

Great write, Vic. Man, I really like the songs you write. Excllent lyrics --relatable, heartfelt and thought-provoking. A wonderful melody for singing along, and the perfect vocal to encurage that.

Moody by name and moody by nature. That's me.
I just have to work more on the "effective" part. smile

Excellent idea for a narrative.
The solo works better than I thought it would.
Your voice fits/suits/carries this really well.

This is really nice Vic. Did y'all have a civil war over there, too?

smile

Anyway, I really like your Americans songs. This is great.

Happy New Year.

Yes, we had one 200 years before you. Maybe we started some kind of weird fashion. It is said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. smile

That is a beautiful melody to go with the tender and very relatable lyric.

The vocals and the sessions guys are comforting (a la Norman Blake).

Wonderful imagery and well produced by all measures.
it would make a great video.

Happy New Year!

Thank you J&B.
I would love to make a video. I have a few old family film clips from the '60's that I could use.
The amount of work is daunting though. Maybe one day.

Your delivery is just right and uncluttered backing works well.

Re the fiddle: It was like one of those rare moments in an intimate gig where someone asks to join in from the audience and adds that little extra.
