OK... I didn't write this, but I do have permission to record/post it. And it's not BB or RB tracks....And yeah, that's not me singing either....But that is me on the guitar..... So, all the disclosures are out of the way.

I need ears and thoughts.... Mainly regarding levels and the licks being played. Tasty? Too much? Not enough? Let me hear your thoughts.

I'm providing the lead guitar and fills. I also play the rhythm in the rest of the song around the fills and solo. Nothing I do on this is multi track or studio magic.

NOTE: there is another rhythm on this ....cleaner, that I did not play.... you can hear it in a few places.

It's a straight up guitar track. I used flange as well as some sweet crunch. And the guitar is the tele miked with the SM-58 on the grill of the Studio 22 Boogie.

Listen on some good speakers and also with cans.

Thanks... enjoy

So, you are saying that you were given Vince Gill's studio tracks to a song from a CD that is being released tomorrow...

...and asked to replace Vince's lead...

...and given permission to post that on the PGMusic forum?

Why? Would love to hear that story.

Yeah, I know that track too and like Floyd I'm curious to hear the story...

Regarding that track.... yes....It's available to anyone who wants the track. No, it's not being released tomorrow by Gill..... The point is to play your own lead and fills and whatever and videotape yourself playing the parts live..... no studio magic.... you gotta be able to play it start to finish.... Then, when you're done, post it on the internet on YOUTUBE and link to it....

It's a contest of sorts... I thought it would be fun....so before I start to put the video together, I want ed to get some opinions on the soundtrack of me playing the leads on Gills tune.....

http://onstage.amplifiertv.com/

Hopefully this info resolves the issues raised.

You too can join the fun. Get the track and play around with it. I had never heard Gills version till just now....

Of course... if you think this is a violation of the rules.... feel free to report it and ask the mods to remove this thread.... your choice. It won't make me mad.

Your tracks set well in the mix and are quite good. Good luck in the contest and remember the one who first wished you luck....

Thanks Charlie. My wife listened last night and made a few suggestions which I incorporated into this version.

The playing is nicely subtle, as it needs to be. There is an awful lot going on in the track (crowded), not leaving much room for discernible licks. The main lead seems to change tone at 2:43 - was that intentional? As if it's 2 sections (the 1st section is a little louder than the 2nd - if you had not mentioned that you did it all at once, I would have guessed that it was 2 different takes, one being pasted in). I like the tone of the 2nd part.

The end licks are smooth. Did you play that fade?

Indeed that track is really busy. They didn't take much time to clean it out.... they simply muted VG's axe. I had the guitar parts up several dB louder but my wife commented that the guitar was too loud for the mix and she was correct so I pulled it back and let it set in the mix a bit more. That does make it a bit hard to hear in a few places as it competes with the stuff behind it, over which I had no control.

In the solo, I started with flanged guitar and then switched to straight tele. Yes that was intentional. I used flanger on the intro as well as harmony licks to VG's vocals in several places. Those places should be very obvious.

I'll be doing the video soon to accompany the music where I will be playing it completely through from start to finish. No cuts and paste or edits.

The tone for the rhythm and the second part of the solo as well as the ending is tele into boogie.... at a low volume. Sweet crunch... I really like that tone as well. You'll very likely be hearing that tone or a variant thereof in my future original tunes. Since it is recorded into Sonar, the fade on the guitar matches the fade on the master track.

Hey Herb,

I can be a total guitar snob when I want to be so I listened to it that way, extremely carefully, thinking that is what you wanted. That being said, I really like the overall work..a lot. Very delicate. The sound from about 2:48 on is perfect to my guitar snob ears, I loved every single bit of it, I thought it was beautiful. However, from about 2:32 or so until 2:45 I guess, there was too much flange for me and it seemed somewhat out of character with what is to come, I can't describe except to say that 2:48 on is very muscular and masterful, but to me (and this is just me) that 2:32 to 2:45 ultra flangey section seems kind of watered down in overall tone quality by comparison and I didn't like it quite as much. But that was the only part where you didn't completely have me. Others might feel differently. Great work man. Beautiful tone you have going on there.

I listened to this early today when you posted it...before there was more explanation of what the project is. VERY cool project btw!

A few things to know, or remind you of.

1-I am not a guitarist.

2-I didn't know this song at all, and initially thought it was an original of yours.

3-I typically listen to the song THEN read others comments, so I'm not swayed before hearing for myself.

My first over all impression was "holy s#^t Herb! This is AMAZING!" I loved the guitar sound, and mood it created, and blown away by the vocals (lead and harmonies), and production over all.

I was stunned. I was jealous!

I kept thinking, "who did he get to sing this?" and "it sounds a little like if Vince Gill and Feetwood Mac did a song."

I read the comments and went "Oh! Ok! I get it. Still very cool!"

So my point, I liked your guitar work a lot, and felt it really gave the song a great sound/mood. The solo stood out slightly more than I am used to for a solo, but I may wrong on that. I don't remember thinking that the first pass. You know how you can OVER listen?...well, I'm sure that's why this thread is here smile

I will let others give you much better advice than I can, but I like the idea of the project and really liked what you did with it.

Well done Herb!

I will be easy to reconsider the solo and retrack that first part playing the exact same notes and licks..... Yeah, thats the kind of feedback I need. I was actually kinda sitting on the fence about the split solo starting with flanged guitar going to straight.... I think I'll keep the flanger on the harmony to the vocal and play straight up on the solo.

My wife also commented that it sounded like Stevee Nicks...Rihannon.

My hat will never fit my head again.... Thanks...! Hopefully you still respect me now that you know how it was all done....

I also thought the solo to be two takes. My initial reaction during my first listen was that I mildly disliked the flanging solo, but at the same time felt it fit the song and I assumed my reaction was due to personal taste so I didn't bother to comment about it. After reading others comments and knowing you are revisiting it; While I wouldn't mind seeing less flange in that section, I recommend you do something to keep the variance between the two sections because the variance feels natural to the song.

Herb, It was well played and sits in the mix just right. I am not a big fan of flange, but that is just me. Good job and good luck. That is a very cool thing for Vince and Guitar Center to do. Hopefully we will see more of this type of thing in the future. Tom

SRP, Charlie & Tommy....

I'm not a big FX on the guitar sort of guy....I rarely use them, if you listen to my tunes, especially flange. I just thought it worked well in this instance...and there are places where FX tend to be the spice that brings things to life...

I have retracked the guitar since I did burn the flange to the guitar track.

Next week, I will start work on the video. Shooting it won't be the hard part since the guitar parts are well in hand.... it's the making of the video that will prove to be interesting for me since I rarely work with video.

I'll post the finished video link here when it's done.

Let me know if I can be of any help with the video. I have several pieces of hardware that may be helpful including a GoPro, a Drone, A DSLR with various lens and several varied camcorders. I also have some field audio equipment but you shouldn't need that for your video this time. Been wanting to have lunch with you and talk ham radio, dogs and music for some time.
