I came up with this after escorting two kids to the circus...nowhere near Texas, but the style seemed to fit.

Circus Girl
( Robert Cordrey, March 2001)

Katie and Joanne
if your buttons and bows are all spic and span
lets go hear the ballyhoo around town
of roustabouts and harlequin clowns

they`re turning cartwheels on Star Hill
juggling teapots they don`t spill
and so high it`ll make your head spin
no taller than you up on the cloud swing

it`s the circus girl
circus girl
trusts the man who`s tongue`s on fire
and the angels of the high wire
let the calliope turn the world
of the circus girl

Katie and Joanne
your finery has me in a trance
you be the jugglers I`ll be the clown
on our merry way through this sad town

you`ll see no last performing bear
just a man eating flames on a tower of chairs
and flying through the air with the geatest of ease
the suicide queen of the trapeze

its the circus girl
circus girl
trusts the man who`s tongue`s on fire
and the angels of the high wire
let the calliope turn the world
of the circus girl

Robert,

What a terrific intro and riff between chorus and verse 2... very creative. There are some highly visual lyrics too. The "juggling teapots", "angels on the highwire"... my favourite was "suicide queen of the trapeze" - that says and shows an incredible amount of detail in just a few words. I thought the melody was well structured too!

You brought a smile to my face smile I was entertained!

Regards,
Noel

Robert,

A lovely song in every way. Why ? it spelt it, it smelt of circus, from the get go, you could see it, feel it, sawdust, young faces in awe, excitement and then the filtering of the accordion within, for me the link.
When one is able to create a powerful visual aspect to ones song, you can indeed be proud

Interesting and imaginative, Robert.

Tuba would have been a fun addition...

Noel,
I had fun with the intro loop ( remembered it from Sgt Peppers` Mr Kite) and was surprised that it fit again as a "wake-up" after the insrumental break. I`m glad it left you with a smile!

Paddy,
It was a great expedition with the young lasses that lives on for me with the song - thanks very much for listening and letting me know the Big Top sensations come through!

Thanks Floyd,
I did look for a trumpet fanfare and didn`t find one that quite fit- yes, good idea- Tuba would probably be right on the money.

Robert,

FWIW, I've never been to a real circus in my 72 years.
But many County Fairs.

My circus knowledge based only on Movies and TV shows.

The feeling I got from the introduction parts, then your arrangements
as the song and your vocals were happy and wonderful for me to listen to.

Thanks for your hard work and sharing.

Robert

Really enjoyed this. It set a perfect scene and ambience from the very first note. I liked the timing and phrasing, and thoroughly had a great experience with the lyrics.

Very good indeed.

Very nicely done, and I'll go with the description of "imaginative" that others used!! Love the intro and outro circus riffs. Melody, arrangement, and lyrics all work well. I like the vocal fx a lot but they are in contrast to the other very dry tracks. I would put some verb on the other tracks to make it feel like it's in the same musical space. Nice job Robert! Take care. Greg

Thanks very much for listening:if the happiness of that day comes through, then my work on the song has been well rewarded!

There`s so much ambience to a circus that the hard part on the song was not getting too carried away with the loops. I`m really glad you liked the timimg as I had to sing many takes to get it sounding right.
Cheers,
Robert

Greg,
Thanks for your listen and supportive comments.
I`m going to go back to the mix again to see if I can hear the contrast you`re pointing out. I used more of a"rock" setting on Nectar than usual which accounts for the reverb there, and none on the backing, so your comment makes good sense.

Agree with Greg - imaginative.

Bob this is very good! It brought me back to my youth when the circus would come to our town. Clowns, balloons, acrobats, the girl on the flying trapeze, ring master etc all came back. Thanx for the trip!

PS - I remember paying a dime to see the tattooed lady! Now I see them on the streets for free!

Alyn - Glad it took you back.

Peter - Thank you!

Mario - You are welcome for the memory lane trip. I was thinking on the night back then "This might be the last circus I see"...so far & sadly that seems likely.
