As we count down to the end of 2016, I figured a "clock song" would be appropriate...

Cuckoo clock sample

CUCKOO

i hear the clock strike
i'm reminded by that bird
been waiting all night
cuckoo is all i've heard

i'm gonna smash that bird
if he calls out one more time
it'll be his last word
he's driving me out of my mind

   he called me cuckoo once
   he called me cuckoo twice
he called me cuckoo through the night
'cause i'm waiting for you to come back home
   undeniable, certifiable
   crazy as a loon
'cause i'm waiting for you to come back home
still waiting for you to come back home

it's nearly morning
where the hell you at
i smashed that bird; i warned him
can't take no more of that

one last look, hit the lights
giving up, going to bed
but something just ain't right
cuckoo still running through my head

   repeat chorus

Happy New Year, Y'all.
Hope you have a great one.

Great song Floyd and Michael.

So much energy in that song, I can see you kicking that bird down the street.

All the best.

Cheers.
Mike.

Hi Floyd and Michael.

I DO like your heavier side, Floyd.

An amazing track with super guitars and what sounded like Phil Collins on drums!

Great vocals and inspired lyrics.

A startlingly good mix - loved the reverb.

A good track to close out 2016.

ROG.

Yeah! Awesome groove, and nice to hear you rock out!

I really enjoyed this, great intro! And the lyrics are fun and well written. Love the vocals, especially in the chorus, the way you arranged that part.

I would have liked the lead guitar to be just a touch more upfront in the mix, it seems a little buried, especially the little lead guitar fill before the second verse.

Great way to end out the year!

Very Nice Floyd. Great production. Great harmonies. Great song. Love the cuckoo sample!
Posted By: dcuny Re: Cuckoo - 12/30/16 04:26 PM
A solid production, and a very clever write.

In particular, I loved the way you held off on the reveal - 'cause i'm waiting for you to come back home - until the chorus was almost over. Sort of a "Luke, I am your father" moment that completely transforms the song.

Awesome driving tune. Excellent collaboration. Love the cuckoo effect. Awesome vocal and lyric.

Love the cuckoo sound, when I first saw the title I didn't know what to think about it, until I listened ;-)
you and Michael did a very nice job. A great rocker all around.

Appreciate your support always, ROG. And...to have you say the drums sounded like Phil Collins is a real compliment! The RealDrums in the style (RockHardModernEv8) were a good choice for this... and I added a snare sample track that duplicated each of the snare hits - and a kick track that duplicated each of the kick hits... that way, I could have complete control of the volume of the kick and snare... "startlingly good mix" - I really appreciate that, too!!

What a great unusual twist for a song!! Really fun rocker! The sound is awesome-sounds like a 70's rock band in a midnight studio with everything turned to eleven!! I don't think I've heard this level of "liveness" with just RTs. I know I can't get there. Vocal (performance and processing) is stellar. Awesome job on this one!! Take care. Happy New Year! Greg

Thanks, Dave. I did wonder about whether the lead needed to come up some. Although, the short one before the 2nd verse was intended to "blend in" to the music flow with the cuckoo, so I'm good with that being not-quite-so-up-front.... but I do think the main solo could come up some...

floyd and Michael, Cool intro, superb mix, expert vocal ( I like the delay) make this a great listen. The lead guitar was buried a bit. Drums sound great. A solid, fun rocker. Tom

I think our monitors are OK. We had to pick them up off the floor. This puppy rocks! Your ability to produce killer productions in multiple genres seems to know no end. This is a great example of how a seemingly pegged in your face production can also, counterintuitively, breath. This must have been an interesting mixing exercise.

You vocally move seamlessly from country ballads to rock and it works. That's a real gift and makes, we're sure, for a lot of fun. This cool write and production makes for a lot of fun for us also!

Inspired intro ( well, what else could you do with a very original title like that!) and it sounds like you really had fun with the vocal on this - energy comes powering through.
I too like this rocking side of you!

Thanks!

I generally mix as loud as works. I don't believe in that -12 dB thing - at all!!! As long as it isn't distorting... and, heck... it's Rock'n'Roll. Often, it's the snare that is the thing that sends the meters into the red. I don't worry about that - it's a snare, after all... if you take that out and everything else is under, then you are okay - throw that hot drum back in!

Hi, Floyd !:))

This must be one of the
most original rock tunes I´ve
ever heard and at the same time
it is one of your absolute best
if not even the best rocker !

Those lyrics too, could not
help laughin´my belly out
thinkin´on that poor bird that
is completely innocent and can´t help
jumpin´out when the machinery
requires it to do do !!!

LOL

Thanks, Josie! Actually getting the cuckoo sound intertwined took some doing... turns out you have to tune it to fit in with the key of the song and stretch it to fit the tempo...

Thanks, Tom. Yeah, I agree that the lead is a bit low... I got so wrapped up in all the other parts - the cuckoo sample, the drums, the vocal processing - that my ears got used to the level it was at. Mental note..

What a nice review! If I can get such a reaction from you - the man with the perfect live band mixes - how could I not be pleased?... not sure about that "vocally move seamlessly".. HA!.. this is HARD for me! Thanks!!!

What a production!!! Stellar on every level. A full production similar to my take away from 'Diamonds' from a few years ago.

You seem as comfortable with this style as you do with ballads. Great dynamic vocals.

Enjoyed this one a lot. I've got a great image in my head of Janice and Bud jumping around trying to catch the falling monitors...

floyd and Michael,

Congratulations on a great write, outstanding arrangement, and in really involving production and performance. Try as I might, I couldn't stop my feet from tapping. I really liked the sync'd cuckoo-clock sound... a very inventive musical addition.

Really enjoyable music!

All the best,
Noel
