Pickup Truck Cowboy

©2011 Robert Randall Burke

Well, the sun's goin' down
In the desert tonight
And the cowboy's alone with his blues.
There's no one in town
Not even a light
So he looks for a friend in the booze.

He's a pickup truck cowboy
His pony is gone
To the pasture where old ponies go
His six-gun is rusty
It lies on the shelf
Can you tell me
Where old cowboys go?

The moon's on the rise
And the coyote calls
In sadness, the song of his soul.
Like the cowboy, he's broken
From too many falls
In silence, the time takes it's toll.

You have such a strong command of melody!

All the way around, this song sounds genuine to how it should. I feel it's really well produced...not just mixed, the sound choices, placement of those sounds AND mix is great!

And of course, I have ALWAYS been a big fan of your vocal tone.

Great job!

This has a James Taylor vibe to it. Sweet Baby James

Cool tune

Another excellent production Robert. You've captured a great lyric, forlorn and melancholy, and packaged and delivered it with a perfect musical production.

Thoroughly enjoyable.

My word of choice, forlorn, has already been used but your vocal so captures the trail worn, weary feel of the protagonist. Yet your creative write keeps it from becoming maudlin or over-wrought.

Everything works toward this end.

Powerful and enjoyable!

Robert,

this must be one of your best vocals so far. They sound brighter than usual. Different EQ settings or something?
The song itself is very Pro sounding all around.
Wonderful work!

Hi Robert. Enjoyed this tasteful and sophisticated treatment of the old cowboy theme.
Strings come through and carry me along. Cheers.

Bob, This is another fine write with an excellent melody and standout vocals. The chord changes are quite unusual and make this a pleasure to listen to. Tom

Great song!

I heard early Eagles influence and as mentioned by Herb
some JT sounding melody in there.

A really nice write and performance

Hello Bob,

A real nice country waltz! Your backing tracks are simply perfect and the chord arrangement, particularly on the chorus, give the song a a continually fresh sound. Your vocal fits nicely in this. Terrific lyric, too. What a great listen! We totally enjoyed our listen,

Back for another listen...Janice commented that she felt a strong Glen Campbell connection to the song. Really nice! And as she says, he sings it really well."
