I Will Stand by You

By David Snyder

V1

Sometimes in life
It’s a fact
The world
turns its back on you
It happens to all of us
Once in a while
It’s just a test that we go through
But if you ask me what I have been taught
If you ask me what my faith has bought
I can tell you that these words are true
It’s the only thing that I know how to do

CH:

I will stand by you
I will stand by you
All the way to the top of the hill
Where the sky has grown dark and still
Where the hillside is littered with nails
And they separate lies from the truth
I will do what I came to do
And I will stand by you

V2

They say I don’t act like a king
But to some people I am everything
I’m the only reason they have to sing
And I’m the reason why their church bells ring
Everybody has their moment of truth
And I’ve never failed to offer the proof
Cause I tell the mountains to move
And no matter what this world will do
I will stand by you

CH:

I will stand by you
I will stand by you
All the way to the top of the hill
Where the sky has grown dark and still
Where the hillside is littered with nails
And they separate lies from the truth
I will do what I came to do
And I will stand by you

Interlude

All the way to the top of the hill
Where the sky has grown dark and still
Where the hillside is littered with nails
And they separate lies from the truth
I will do what I came to do
And I will stand by you
l will stand by you

David,

This is an excellent write.... really excellent. The melody is so strong and it has that all-important feel of familiarity that makes it sit so very comfortably on the ears. This is such a hard thing to accomplish and here you are making it seem so, so easy.

The lyrics in your first verse blew me away. You set the scene incredibly well and brought it to life vividly. The below lyrics grabbed my attention and pulled me into the song. I was hooked after that!

Quote:
Sometimes in life
It’s a fact
The whole world
turns its back on you
It happens to all of us
Once in a while
It’s just a test that we go through

Then, when the chorus came along, the meaning of everything you'd sung so far glistened with crystal clarity. Outstanding. Also, that chorus you've created resonates with strength and might and I found the words became very visual. This was such a good listen!

In a single word....

All the best,
Noel

WOW!!!!!!

Noel pretty much said it all, and summed it up nicely, "Brilliant!".

One of the best songs I've heard in a long time, well done.

What a cool tune David. Super vocal and lyric. The acoustic has such smooth and rich tones. Well done

What a tune! I'm getting a Tom Petty vibe here, which is always a good thing in my books. It's perfectly catchy, and I found it to sound really sincere and heartfelt. There's some really, really nice lyrics in this too. By the way - the mixing job on this is on point too!

Fantastic job here David, thanks for sharing smile

Hi David,

Simply stunning! As Noel said. So powerful yet so seemingly effortless. The melody makes you think it's something like we had heard before - but really we hadn't. That, my good friend, takes an uncanny talent. it had to first be conceived and then facilitated with equal precision.

Simply wonderful David. Spiritual without ever going there directly. This song should go all the way to the top of hill. I am impressed beyond my ability to further define. And Di and I completely agree with the message.

I was going to tell you all the various things you did in the creation and delivery of this marvelous song. But as i thought what to say, it came to me that I'd already said everything was really important. I'll simply say everything about this sings inception and conception equals the magic of the final product. Di and i are blown away. We both tip our hat to youy.

Excellent. Wow!

David,

This is just outstanding! This is my favorite of yours. So well written. The message is so true, and awesome. Your vocals are perfect for this song. Has that Dylan/Tom Petty feel, with a heart-piercing delivery of the truth. All on top of a simple, fitting arrangement.

Did I mention, I like this one?

I think this is a song that all of us can relate to at some point in our lives. It's such a profound song. Your vocals are perfect for this type of song, I think. It suits the kind of raw emotions just lurking under the surface.

Well done, and another great song! smile

David,
Excellent song - lyrically & musically excellent.
The vocal has a mannered/shouty early Dylan delivery which makes sense but seemed a little aggressive.
Top stuff.

David,
Marvellous write - I really like the way your vocal ( way to really sing!) brings us to the declaration of the chorus and then backs off just enough.
The meld of your own guitar/synth playing and RT`s is seemless.
Love it!

Powerful tune, David. I too heard a lot of Dylan in this one. I also heard a lot of truth. "Everybody has their moment of truth." So well put.

This is one of those rare song for which this forum is just too small smile Although the lyrics have religious metaphors, the message is universal. The arrangement is simple but yet powerful. Singing is excellent and the melody is strong and familiar, just like any U2 song, this is recognizable as another David Snyder classic smile

Absolutely LOVE IT David!! Maybe I tend to read in to the lyrics something not intended, but it sounds like it is written from the viewpoint of Jesus. You don't have to reveal the mystery if you'd rather keep it that way-just my take. Either way--WOW!!! GREAT STUFF!! Take care. Greg
Posted By: David Snyder Re: I Will Stand By You - 11/13/17 06:56 PM

Hi Greg,

I wrote it such that this can be the predominant message and viewpoint for people so inclined to hear it that way. And if that is the case with you, I am extremely happy.

However, since faith and spirituality is a mystery, I allowed it to remain mysterious so that people of all faiths could relate to the central message as well--that of standing by one another "all the way to the top of the hill...where the hillside it littered with nails...and where they separate lies from truth." Dylan does this a lot.

I did have a funny moment when I was about to write and sing the vocals, where I imagined the Lord by my side saying, "Hey, let me take a whack at this one."

Who knows. Maybe He did.

I liked it very much David.
I liked the raw power of the song.
I liked that your lyrics are, at the same time, clear, direct and yet can be interpreted in many different ways, lyrics that may touch people from very different walks of life.
I liked your vocal performance, and especially those tiny, beautiful imperfections that make it absolutely perfect.
As someone said already: BRILLIANT.

Man, that sounds like a lost Tom Petty write. Excellent.

Your vocal exudes soul and sincerity.

Both your guitars and the CelticAir acoustic sound fantastic.

Strong stuff happening here.

David,
a slightly more technical comment.
I've been listening to this song a few times.
And it gets better every time I do :-)
But on a more technical note, I just want to notice how beautiful is the passage from the first verse to the first chorus. At that point, the listener expects a change of chords. After "It’s the only thing that I know how to do" the ears are really "ripe" for a change of chords. But ... you don't change. You repeat "I will stand by you" twice on the SAME chord. And ... it works incredibly well. It's magical because you surprise the listener by NOT changing. And that makes the actual change of chord progression, as it happens a couple of lines later, at "top of the hill", even more inspiring, more powerful, more beautiful.

Very inspired song, very inspiring.
Posted By: David Snyder Re: I Will Stand by You - 11/14/17 07:06 PM

Wow, thanks man!!!! I appreciate that Jon!!

I guess when I asked the good Lord to step up to the mic and help me out, I made a good move. Some folks say He really knows what He's doing, and that has always appeared to be the case to me.

I guess from now on, my line is going to be:

"Dear Lord, please help me write this song so it works and I don't mess it up."

David...I was a fan before but now I am a super fan...this is by far my favorite song of yours...beautifully written...this story has been told in songs thousands of times for thousands of years...it is special...but when simply and profoundly presented (as you did) it takes on new dimensions of glory...well written...great melody...passionately sung...the total package!

David, I too am late to the party. I've been away and trying to catch up with some of the songs I've missed. Man, I'm glad I didn't miss this one! This is such a strong song and strikes such a deep chord. You've written so many good songs, but this one seems to have been led - all the way from the writing through the presentation and production it resonates deep, personal meanings, and you did a masterful job following the master. You've gotten a lot of compliments on this song, and everyone of them are deserved. Fantastic song, thanks for giving us all a listen, I loved it.
