Who said that ukuleles are just for happy, silly, upbeat tunes?
Ukuleles can be very expressive. They can convey happiness, but also sadness, love, reflectiveness and so much more.
Well, this is what I think.
This is another ukulele song of mine.
It starts with the uke, and then ... things happen smile
It's about saying goodbye, losing something or someone.
But it's not a sad song, actually. Or, at least, I don't think of it as such. To me, it's about that sense of "sad but serene acceptance". Does it make any sense? Not sure. After all, I know nothing about this song. I just wrote it. Songs belong to the listeners smile

(by the way, BIAB helped me with the drums and bass here)

Lyrics:

YOU’LL BE GONE

When the moon is high
when the wind is strong
you will set your sail
and you'll be gone

When the night is warm
when the days are long
you will touch my hand
and you'll be gone

Like snow in the spring
like a thunderstorm in july
like a river suddenly dry
I'll realize the time has come
and you'll be gone

When your eyes are clear
when your arms are strong
you will say goodbye
and you'll be gone

I'll see rain in the sun
I'll see icicles melting away
flowers blooming just for one day
and I won't be afraid when the time will come
and you'll be gone

Like snow in the spring
like a thunderstorm in july
like a river suddenly dry
I'll realize the time has come
and you'll be gone

Hi John. Another delicate and pretty tune. Particularly like this verse.

Like snow in the spring
like a thunderstorm in july
like a river suddenly dry
I'll realize the time has come
and you'll be gone.

The strings really added vitality to this great write.
Thank you for another great effort.
Rob.

Jon,

Another excellent song. Beautiful write. Simple and poetic at the same time - always a real accomplishment. (You have mentioned before that English is not your first language - what is? one would NEVER know that you weren't "native").

Excellent recording. Your vocals sit SO nicely in the mix.

Nice orchestration. The piano touches are really tasteful.

A great listen.

Thank you Rob and Floyd,

My mother tongue is Italian.
You have no idea how happy you make me when you say that my accent is not obvious smile

hi Jon.
Clear and clean and delicate but with a strong rhythm.
Very good. Cheers.

Hi Jon,

Love this! You have a special touch in your arrangements and your lyrics are always wonderful. I agree with Floyd about how "native" your English sounds on your vocals. And your vocabulary and grammar are perfect.

Such a nice song ... a true pleasure to listen to. Wishing you the very best.

floyd mentioned “simple and poetic.”

Yes, that is a sweet spot that is hard to hit. But when it’s nailed it makes for a great lyric like yours.

We think your term “sad but serene acceptance” well sums it up.

We enjoyed the fine production!

Really nice song, bit melancholy, but still somehow positive. And the string part surprises at the right moment, bringing timeless feeling.

Wow, you did an awesome job here! You created a dark and somber mood - which as you pointed out, is unusual for the ukulele. When I think ukulele I imagine a bright and upbeat tune. This is certainly not that! It's still incredible though - it reminds me of Sufjan Stevens a bit, if you've ever heard of him.

Thanks so much for sharing, Jon smile

I never heard of Sufjan Stevens, I'm gonna check it out. Thanks again!!

Jon, you are really stringing together some great material here on the forum! This has Cat Stevens all over it! I bet you could really do some great covers of his music! But back to yours, the songs you post have such a nice gentle appeal with perfect vocals! Enjoy your material! Thanks, Torrey
