Sometimes you just can't take anymore.

So you gotta just hang your head and shrug your shoulders...

...and write a song.

GROW UP

we missed so many chances
we're not as young as we once were
you thought you'd find the things you wanted
now you're not so sure
so you look around to lay the blame
i'm the only one you see
so i'm the villain, i'm the wretch
you throw it all back at me

   grow up
   dammit open your eyes
   quit buying your own alibis
   grow up
   baby when will you see
   i can't fight your fights
   i'm not your shining knight
   that ain't on me

you can mourn your loss of innocence
it won't do you much good
i could apologize for the things I say
but i don't believe i should
part of me want to hold you
and tell you it's all right
part of me wants to call us fools
for trying to save this night

   repeat chorus

you cinderella your days away
conjure dragons for me to slay
i'm suppose to know the right things to say
that's just your fantasy

   repeat chorus

   i can't fight your fights
   i'm not your shining knight
   that ain't on me

I can really relate to this song. I love what you decided to do with the lyrics versus the sound/style of the song. It makes me think of someone who has just kind of accepted that some things just aren't going to change, but it also has that spunkyness to it that kinda hints at a touch of resentment/bitterness. That's what I got out of it, anyways! Awesome job.

Floyd,
"you cinderella your days away
conjure dragons for me to slay" - my favourite lines in a really excellent hard hitting write.
The Bruce arrangement powers along with that Grow Up! refrain punching the message through.
Loved it!

Great song - great production - great delivery!

What a tune! I enjoyed every aspect of this. The progression and how it picks up in energy for the chorus is perfect. It displays a strong sense of songwriting knowledge, and your vocal delivery here is flawless too. The lyrics are vivid and memorable as well. Overall just a nice catchy tune smile

Great work, and thanks for sharing!

Man, you had me hooked right from that opening drum riff panned left! Drums are huge and sound great.

I love hearing you do rock material, you should let your inner rock guy out more often! 'Cause this is as good as it gets, sort of a Springsteen meets Tom Petty vibe.

Lots of great lines here, I think my favorite is:

"you cinderella your days away
conjure dragons for me to slay"

Very cool ending too with that echo repeat on the guitar.

Awesome!

What a cool song Floyd. Loved the backtrack on this. Drums were just awesome. Super vocal and lyric. And the guitar was just so good. Just super Floyd. Well done.

Hi Floyd,

I think I've liked every song you've ever done, but this heavier side is still the
side of you I like the best.

A fabulous driving groove going on with some superb vocals and harmonies.

Storytelling is one of your strengths and as ever, this has some splendid lyrics.

Mix sounded great on the mains, but a minor niggle - in the 'phones the hard-panned
toms took me a bit by surprise - otherwise, a killer drum sound.

Hey, great guitars on this one - loved them.

Cheers, ROG.

Man, those drums...from the git-go...they sound over the top good. And when the piano makes itself known it just shouts at you...in a good way of course. Great BIG sounding mix.

In short, along with the above and propelled by your vocals this puppy just ROCKS!

Thanks, Torrey. The Springsteen thing is not actually intentional. It's just the way most of my Rock stuff comes out - probably because I wore out my copy of Born To Run...it's just a "part of me"...

Hey Floyd,

I've been on hiatus for awhile, (I am back with a new song though) but I see you continue to crank out quality work in my absence! grin

This is good stuff. The drums sound fabulous as does everything else... Vocal, backing tracks, mix, etc.
For some reason this has sort of a Neil Diamond thing going for me. cool
First time it hit the chorus brought a big grin to my face!

Great Job!

Love that piano!!!

I like the "staggered" (relative to the lead vox) background vocals. They add to the energy and intensity.

The song, music and lyrics, is like a good steam locomotive barreling down the middle of my head.

Great job once again on the production.

much enjoyed!

Dave - interesting to hear you say that. I have never consider myself much good at Rock'n'Roll since I don't have that voice for it - using when I try, people refer to it as "Country Rock" - which is really still just Country... smile Always appreciate people quoting their favorite lines... those are a bit more "poetic" than I usually get... Thanks for mentioning that last guitar hit - I really like that, too...

Technically, I loved all the aspects of the song - big sound, expressive singing, excellent production.

But - and much to my irritation - I found I wasn't emotionally drawn in, because the hook's lyric didn't appeal to me. Not a complaint against the song at all - that's my loss. cry

ROG - I certainly appreciate that you think my heavier stuff is "worthy"...means a lot coming from you. The drums were a stereo loop set (from Drums On Demand) - like RealDrums are stereo - so in this case, the panning of the toms were already in the mix. I have some drum sets from them that are all separated out, but I don't use them much - always seems like more work than I want to deal with so I end up grabbing and using the stereo mixed ones...

The ghost of… The Boss – what's not to like!
A great rocker, great lyrics and melody.

Agree about earlier comments on hard panning toms.
How do you mix your drum loops? Have you added some kind of compression to them? One or more tracks, bus-mixing?

And your vocals – outstanding! Really enjoying you taking out your american rocker potential!

Thanks for the ride :-)

I have a fair number of suggestions on what you can change in your song. If you are looking to make your song bad, let me know...I'm your man. Otherwise, you will be stuck with this great song. Your call really. wink

People have already mentioned many things...the lyrics, drums..all of that...fantastic.

Personally, there is so much working right, that I hate to limit it. I would like to say though, that I really like the hook extending into the piano at the end of the choruses. So cool. The organ coming into build into the next section...awesome! Tearing down and rebuilding that chorus towards the end, beautiful. You did SO MUCH to create interest in listening.

Loved it!

Strangely, as I'm writing this, Born in the USA is playing in the room I'm in. Hmmm....a sign?

David - appreciate the nice comments. It's actually a good thing that the lyric didn't "hit home" for you... that means you never had a girlfriend like this - that drove you to the point of screaming "Grow up!"... This lyric was actually written when I was about 24...a chaotic time in the relationship...

Einar - Thanks for having a listen. The drums loops in this case are a stereo drum mix - just like RealDrums are - and just like them, I added the same Studio One preset that I always do - which includes an EQ and a multiband compressor. I just drop that one and then don't touch it...

Hello, floyd

Very pop and powerful!
This is exactly American Rock song.
As others said, Bruce Springsteen and Neil Diamond!
Your vocal is very powerful and comfortable as usual.
The great bear of the bass drums is also wonderful.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

I listened to "Grow Up" quite a while back but, for some reason that's now lost in history, I didn't say anything!

Your singing, your writing, your arranging are fantastic (as always). And the production... wow!! It's spectacular. I cannot believe just how much sparkle and shine you manage to add to a mix. This is such a good listen!

Really enjoyed it... and then some!

All the best,
