Across the southern tip of Florida including the beautiful Florida Keys, We are in the midst of an environmental nightmare. This has not seemed to reach the national attention in the way we had hoped. I have spent a good portion of my adult life on these waters and it is heartbreaking to witness the decline in quality. A group of charter boat captains are in Washington DC as I write this. Hopefully they can rattle some cages. To read more please go to;

Save The Everglades

Down in sw fla where the water was so clear
The river of grass doesn’t flow like it did Our world’s gonna disappear
There’s a Tallahassee stranglehold they say the money all sits there
corporate sugar’s a political dam something fishy’s in the air

10,000 souls are gone to heaven if the lake starts to breach the dike
better open the gates let some water out Let’s fix this thing tonite
I’m sure I heard a whisper coming straight the captain’s mouth
It’s time to save the everglades so send the water south

What about fifty years from now when all the fish have died
The Seagrass gone and the algae bloom is everywhere in sight
Our drinking water filled with salt it’s a scientific fact
Disaster’s at our doorstep if we fail to act

10,000 souls are gone to heaven if the lake starts to breach the dike
better open the gates let some water out Let’s fix this thing tonite
I’m sure I heard a whisper coming straight the captain’s mouth
It’s time to save the everglades so send the water south

Tom,

This should be the theme song for this cause... Tremendous song. Outstanding vocal and instrumentation. Best mix ever!

Good political song.

John Anderson did something similar back in the day.

Water..... ask California how important it is. They shut it off to the farmers to try save some miniature fish.

Foolishness..... if you ask me. DO the right thing.

Nice job on the song. I could see this being the banner song for that movement.

Terrific! Loved everything about this, my new favorite from you I think.

That repeating riff really makes the song, not to mention the great vocal and solo.

And of course the message which is the important thing, very well written. Never been to the keys, but it's on my bucket list of places to visit. I'm going to check out that website after I post this.

Man, talk about capturing a feeling! Dang!

The lyrics and melody said it all, they guitar echoed the meaning.

I love the feel of this. You don't hear enough of these songs anymore. You nailed it Tom!

Great job!

I just hate that you had to write it in the first place. But I'm sure as hell glad you did!

An excellent "issue write". You've stated the case in just 4 lines. Very well done.

The Driving Country Blues is a perfect vehicle for the message.

Excellent mix. Good "passionate" vocal - clean and clear and gets the message across. Cool guitar riff. Nice "angry" solo...

Love that last chord! Well done all around.

Herb, thanks for the nice comments. You are right. Seminole Wind was definitely on mind throughout this write. I have a close association with that great song having played it thousands of times. We opened several times for JA and in the song he mentions the Seminole war chief Osceola. We are friends with some of his descendants. This song means a lot to me and I thank everyone for indulging me and learning about the cause, Tom

Like fj mentioned those four lines absolutely nail the entire problem and the reasons behind it.

If you removed the message from the lyric and changed the entire meaning it would remain a great tune based on the performances, melody and mix.

But with that lyric...wow! This is a textbook example of where the lyric, arrangement, vocal and instrumental tracks can have that symbiotic feel that is so often lacking.

Tremendous and thanks for the background link.

Hello, Tom

Environmental problems are everywhere serious. There are various environmental problems in Japan as well. It is quite difficult to solve them with the power of singing, but nothing will start unless we raise our hands.
These subjects tend to be heavy, but I was touched by the fact that difficult subjects are expressed with your powerful vocal very well.
I agree with floyd.
The Driving Country Blues is a perfect vehicle for the message.

Hi Tommy,

Good luck changing the minds of politicians.

I like the song. It has good production values and straight forward lyrics but it didn't move me. Songs created in support of a cause need to have an emotional impact and this song didn't hit me in the gut. I never understood (from the song) what we're loosing.

I love the Everglades because I've experienced it. The summer heat, the smell, the sound of wind blowing over the reed marshes and through the swamp trees, the view of the sun at dawn or dusk (more dusk than dawn for me!). You have to make citizens realize what their losing so they will bring the politicians in line.

Jim, thanks for taking the time to send your thoughts. The song is not about the trees or the air quality or the smells or the sounds. It is about the decline in water quality. The entire second verse states the problem; “ What about fifty years from now when all the fish have died
The Seagrass gone and the algae bloom is everywhere in sight
Our drinking water filled with salt it’s a scientific fact
Disaster’s at our doorstep if we fail to act”. I understand you don’t get it. Thankfully some folks do get it as it is being played on ESPN radio on a local weekly fishing show. I do appreciate that you have stated your opinion and I will keep your observations in mind for any future political forays. I do see your point but I also think you missed something here. Respectfully, Tom
