Driving Out of Winslow

By David Snyder

V1

Well I was driving out of Winslow
With a hole the size of Dallas in my heart
I had to drive my Wrangler
‘cause the Eagles' rusty flatbed wouldn’t start
I was two thousand miles from Tampa
But my girlfriend told me not to quit
At least not yet
She said we may not own the world honey
But we’re still driving it

CH:

Yeah it’s somebody’s else’s world
But we’re still driving it
And not every drivers seat’s been taken
So find a place to sit
And if we pray, and we listen
We just might be forgiven
If we sing Hallelujah and commit
Then the Lord God Almighty
Might let us have a hit
So just remember
It’s somebody else’s world
But we still pray in it
We still pray in it

V2

Well the smoke and fog is lifting
As I leave this burning town
I don’t know how it happened
But somebody tried burn the whole place down
I told them it was coming
So get ready for the Apocalypse
Now I’m driving cross this wasteland
For one last kiss from your sweet lips

CH:

Yeah it’s somebody else’s world honey
But we can still protest in it
Though every sanctuary’s taken
And they’ve sold the last permit
But if we pray, and we listen
We just might be forgiven
If we make a sacrifice and forget
Then the Lord God Almighty
Might let us have a hit
But just remember
It’s somebody else’s world honey
But we can forgive in it
We can forgive in it
Yeah it’s somebody else’s world baby
But I’m never gonna quit

AAAhh plain to see the eagle boys where on your mind with this one, good stuff I loved the lyrics.

David,

I love that long rolling anthemic chorus and there are some great lines throughout. Drums coming in sound good and not at all old school.
You always sing with feeling - this is another good one.
The fading out of that last "I`m never gonna quit" surprised me-a thoughtful rather than punchy way to close?

"Though every sanctuary’s taken
And they’ve sold the last permit"

Nice.

Love the Apocalypse/sweet lips rhyme...

A good write all 'round. Good band.

Well done.

The ever creative one strikes again! Really nice arrangement, David. Kind of Folk-Pop-Rock. You know how to string some words together and then throw some equally creative music at them. Good stuff!

Been through Winslow about 8 or 9 times in the past 12 years. It's a lot of things, but pretty ain't one of them! Stopped and ate there about 4 years ago at a place called Alfonso's Mexican Restaurant, or something like that.

Anyway - more magic from the Snyder Studios!

David, you're a songwriting machine. I enjoyed this for all the reasons already said - the epic anthem feel, clever rhymes, great build, sincere vocals... Good stuff!

I don't know how you keep doing it, but you did it again! laugh

Really good, David!

Nice production starting with the acoustic, bringing the band in for the chorus, and then the change for V2 and the build after that. Really helps keep things interesting when you do stuff like that instead of doing the same thing all the way through.

And one of your best vocals I think, very expressive.

You are on top of your game!

Good work David!
We love that Tom Petty like chorus.

I misheard flatbed as flatbread. Now I'm hungry (not for rusty flatbread, though)! Really great job, though! smile

David, IMHO this is your best to date. Everything about this is top shelf. You have a great groove going on here. That coupled with great lyrics and vocals. I heard some Tom Petty and Dylan in this one.

Thanks Beatmaster! I really appreciate that!

Yeah, hard not to be thinking about the Eagles when you are standing on that corner.

smile

They make it REALLY hard for you to not think about it.

Thanks Robert,

Yeah, I decided to go out the same way I came in.

Glad you liked it! Thanks for the listen!

Thanks Floyd,

Well to be frank the lyrics to your last tune about Smoke and Mirrors jump started me here. It is a similar theme, just approached differently I guess.

Thanks for the listen!

Hello, David

Very good song!
The scent of Bob Dylan and The Byrds become thicker than usual.
The key is Bb, but are you playing the guitar with a capotast?
The chord changes are very smooth.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one! When it drops in with the drums just after the minute mark I can just imagine losing it if I was at a concert with this. It sounds nostalgic almost, and really epic and huge. And that great groove does a great job at keeping the momentum the whole way through.

Really, really nice work here - thanks so much for sharing smile

A Petty/Springsteen cover of a Snyder cult classic.

Spot on lines.

Terrific write and a very effective production with the build.

Great work!

Hi Shigeki,

Thank you so much!

Yes, it is capo 3, and I am playing the acoustics myself, so I tried to make it as smooth as I could.

Glad you liked it!!

Thanks Deryk,

Yeah I lot of people lose it when I play. I am not saying that is a good thing necessarily though.

Seriously, thanks for the listen and I am so glad you liked it!

This is right up my alley!! Love the way the song rolls along. Like the picture...cool that there's a sign immortalizing the song and the town. That was the first Eagles hit, circa 1972 (Frey, Jackson Browne)...I had both versions. Remember hearing the song while driving out to Half Moon Bay....referenced the Eagles in my song of the same title.

We may lose and we may win
But we will never be here again
So open up I'm climbin' in
to take it easy

Love it.

This is a wonderful song you've put together here!! Love the dreams/aspiration theme. Some great lyrics and a really nice vocal/arrangement. Love it!! Take care. Greg

A little Tequila Sunrise, mix in some Ole 55, run out and grab John Mellencamp and you're right back in Winslow with Dave...

Great song done with a lot of feeling. I enjoyed this a lot.
