Hello

When I record audio track (sax), it sometimes happens, that some part of punch recording is louder than other. I don't always want to record that part so many times, that it sounds ok compared to earlier stuff in that track. Then I export audio track from BIAB to my DAW software where I do all that kind of editing and then import it back to BIAB. Is there an easier way to do that?

Same automation need is for example in Horns Background track (RealTracks) which I'd like to start at part B of my song or for example slowly come in under solo. How to accomplish that in BIAB? I understand, that it's impossible to handle everything with BIAB, but still, if there are some ideas how do those things easier...Maybe next BIAB comes for that kind of support!

Regards,
Hi Tanelito,

Welcome to the forums.

The following process should make things a little easier for you.

I'll use a song called Noels_Song as an example to explain what I mean.

1. Create a unique folder for your song. This is good practice as it will keep everything separate.

  • For example: I'll create the folder c:\My Songs\Noels_Song.

2. Save your SGU/MGU file to that folder.

  • For example: I'll save Noels_Song.SGU to c:\My Songs\Noels_Song.

3. Using the Audio track, record yourself playing sax.

  • This will create an audio file called TEMPMAIN.WAV in the folder c:\My Songs\Noels_Song

4. Save the song after you've recorded your playing.

  • For example: After saving the song, the TEMPMAIN file is renamed and I will now have a file called Noels_Song.WAV that's in c:\My Songs\Noels_Song

  • Now, whenever I open Noels_Song, the audio track Noels_Song.WAV will automatically load with the song. I never have to import it.

5. Any editing that needs doing, simply navigate to the song's directory and edit the audio file. Always save the file as the same name as the song but with a WAV ending.

  • For example: I'll edit the Noels_Song.WAV file in c:\My Songs\Noels_Song and always save my edited file as Noels_Song.WAV.

  • NOTE: As a safety precaution, save the original recording under a different name so you can always go back to it if you need to.

Because the audio WAV file is in the same directory as the SGU/MGU file, and because the audio has the same name as the song, as mentioned above, the audio will automatically load when the song is opened.

Hope this helps,
Noel

The most likely reason your punches are a different volume is because you changed the input levels to your sound card or interface. It's also possible that you are simply playing at a higher or lower volume. Lots of things can cause it. Generally though, it's an easy fix in a DAW. Simply use volume envelopes to even out the levels or use volume level gain in audio processing to step up or down in volume on the clip. I use both methods quite often.

Why would you want to import it back into BiaB? My personal work path never goes back into BiaB.... it moves to Real Band and ultimately into the DAW.

Again... take the tracks to a DAW. Use volume envelopes to bring the horns in and out where you want. Use your programs in their strong areas and don't try to make them do things that are easier to accomplish in another program that's specifically designed to do that chore.

Here's a look at the envelopes I used in my latest song on the forum. You can use them to bring things in and out surgically (see the piano track) as I am doing or fade in and out slower (B3 track) as you wish.

You can find this song by following the links in my signature. It's at the top.

My work process is as follows. I start in BB. Move to RB for rendering of the audio tracks. Move everything to Sonar for recording my tracks and vox and mixing and processing before I export the finished song. It never flows backward. The only backing up I do is if I decide I need another track and then it's back to RB to get the tracks and then back to the DAW.
Hello,

thank you so much! It seems that there is so much to learn for me using BIAB: In fact I already had done as you mentioned before, and actually the sax wav file was in the folder waiting for me...

Many thanks,
Tanelito
Hello,

thank you for your help! In the start I did just what you explained with my track volume automation (I use Samplitude), but then I thought that wouldn't it be nice and easy to get that kind of musical arranging done in BIAB - a little same kind of editing/musical arranging, that you can now do with the Solist: you can adjust where the solo starts and ends in the song.

Maybe I am just lazy...but many thanks!
