A few months ago I have upgraded BIAB Ultraplus from 2016 to 2018. I bought the 2016 version on disk, which I still have with one license left, and then upgraded to 2018 online. Now my question is, does the 2016 harddisk still have a purpose after the upgrade to 2018, or can I get rid of it? I don't like keeping things in my house anymore 'just in case', in the knowledge that I will never need it again. I already have too many of these 'keep it, you never know' software programs, and it's time to clean up. Can anyone advice me on this, and also to what extend a new version overwrites the old one?

Thank you

From my simplistic view you have a license to an older product that you are unlikely to use. On another note when you paid for an upgrade you did so on the condition you already had a license which is now superceeded by the new license so the old license has most likely technically gone.

My thoughts

Just make sure your new version is registered with PG Music.

If anything happens, you will always be able to re-download files that you have a valid license for.

That way, you need not hang on to redundant versions.

Hi Steevus,

The 2016 hard drive won't contain anything that isn't on the 2018 drive, so you don't really need it at this point.

You're welcome to reformat the old hard drive to use it for something else if you'd like, you just can't sell or give the 2016 version to someone else, without also giving them your 2018 version and transferring your license.

Backing up your 2018 hard drive's contents to the 2016 hard drive so you have an emergency backup would be a pretty good use for it. smile

Thanks

One thing to note is the file system gets changed when you update to 2018.
So I'm not sure you could safely go back to 2016 if you wanted to once you do the update, .. without uninstalling and re-installing everything, which would cause lost data (new realtracks etc at least, hours of songs at worse).

I'd install 2018 over your existing 2016 version, assuming you have BiaB on C: drive.
Then if all went well I'd backup up the 2018 drive onto the old drive and stash it somewhere.

Actually I like having multiple drives of the current version.
I may need to use it in more than one location, so I can leave a drive somewhere else.Like in a drawer at my buddies house.
Planned offsite backup with dual purpose. <grin>
