Green apple here...musician all my life but this is definitely a new game. I do allot of rock, blues, r&b and country. I'm bogged down trying to understand how to tag /end a song. I am stuck on the fact that the program seems not able to allow a simple ending of more than 2 bars..How can an ending/tag be created as per the needs of a given song? Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum.

Maybe this post on endings will help. I was commenting on someone's complaint.

Tags are a separate story.

This topic might be better in the BIAB forum rather than here in Tips and Tricks; it will get more attention there. Maybe name it "Need help with tags and endings", something like that.

Thank you very much, Matt. I will re-post this. So this is a pretty common issue? Not just me eh?

Well, some new users post about it, but I don't consider tags and endings to be a problem at all; you just need to see how they work. The videos, the tutorials, the Help and the FAQ can be of assistance, as well as the forum.

See you over in the BIAB forum.

I got something to work by going into song settings and using the intro (also reoccurs between all choruses...typical country format)as a tag/ending. Only thing left to work out is I have 5 chords in the intro that need to be 4 chords in the same segment when used as a tag/ending. Can't seem to find anything on that. Could you be so kind as to point me to the solution? I know it's there somewhere! Thanks again.

Sure.

You need to copy (or just retype) the chords you want for the ending to an area at the end of the song.

Then find the little box marked "S". It is located between the name of the song and the little box that says "Memo". Click on the "S".

Or - a keyboard shortcut for this is Ctrl+N.

That will bring up the Song Settings Dialog (the "S" for short). Find the checkbox for "Tag Exists" and check it. Then supply the next three bar numbers as needed. You will probably also check the next two boxes about endings, and maybe a few after those.

Give it a try!

ps I'm assuming you have BIAB 2011 for Windows. The Mac version 2010.5 may be somewhat different.

That's one good reason to post questions in the BIAB for Windows forum, or the BIAB for Mac forum as appropriate. This Tips forum is to tell about the tricks you have discovered. More people can help answer questions in the other forums I mentioned.

But - no problem for a first-timer!

Thank you Matt. I think I understand.Sounds like I should leave the begin/end settings alone and insert target bars in the blue boxes creating an alteration that will be accessed ad substituted as the system plays my intro as a tag. Is that close in concept?

Yes - that's it exactly.

The version just before 2011 was 2010.5, so you are one version behind. The ".5" releases occur in the summer, and the current 2011 version came out in early December. There are a lot of good reasons to consider upgrading. The operation of the tag, though, is the same for your version.

Yes, it is a fantastic product, a great forum, and the best company to work with that I've ever found.

When you get to the main BIAB Windows forum, you'll find a ton of us who can help as you get better, and then you can become one of them for the next new user.

Actually this was bought in Jan. this year.It was presented and packaged as 2011 but inside the program it's called 2010.5. Should I take this up with PG? (I did not buy it from them)They told me it was the same. ?? One thing...those bars at the end in dark gray are already numbered...how can they be renumbered? Thanks.

Don't "renumber" the bars (not sure you could, anyway); just use those numbers in the tag settings.

I don't think PG Music has any responsibility here, since it appears your vendor misled you. Maybe they really didn't know the difference, but they sold you an older version a month after 2011 was available. I suggest you go back to the vendor and see if they will make good on it.

This is fun - it's more time today in this Tips forum than I've spent here in the last fifteen years.

Welcome to the forum.

Click on the "Support" tab at the top of this page. That brings you to an index that includes tutorials and (lower corner) videos. In the videos, there is an Intro to BIAB.

If you want to avoid getting too bogged down with making the software do the work, you can get the same results or better by editing manually too. Copy/paste is always a powerful friend when it comes to this stuff. As I've said before as well, an important consideration as a companion to biab and real tracks is a software drum package. I like ezdrummer because it's cheap and sounds great. When using biab and real tracks, I find the ezdrum samples integral for custom parts such as endings, or anything really. Cymbal shots are especially important for customization. In my signature, listen to 'Love I'm fallin in' for an example of a fabricated musical hook I made from editing the audio files after they are generated. I couldn't have generated those parts- it had to be a process of editing, as well as help from third party cymbals all throughout- using ezdrummer. And on the song 'Heart of Gold', the ending is edited heavily to be customized with a ritard to make it less stiff and more musical. Whether in real band or another DAW, learn to edit well and then all you'll really need out of biab and real band to create multitrack custom arragements is instrument choice and renders. After clean renders, the audio files can be edited and manipulated to do a lot. But keep in mind when it comes to real tracks, it's often better and lots more fun and enlightening to let the PERFORMANCES that are generated lead the way, instead of molding them too much. Those great players often have excellent ideas to offer with every new generated file. Use 'em!

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
