When Letha heard the Winter Stroll jam (I posted that earlier here), she wanted to know if there were any lyrics yet. I gave her a concept line and she ran with it and wrote some mighty fine lyrics. Of course I am using the Nashville rule that since I was in the room serving coffee when the lyrics were written, I get to be in the credits (hah!).

Feel free to listen and comment. There are some issues with it here and there, but I've gone about as far as my recording/mixing skills can take me. It's mixed under headphones, so it'll sound the best there.

I like the tune, my only comment is that is overly compressed to my ear, and it don't sound like it is Soundclick's fault this time.

Good playing and message, I like it!

Ditto liked the tune. If you want any help mixing I'm sure there are many around here who would do it. Mastering matters with Rharv and Oren have been my savior.

This sounds like a very accomplished piece of work to me.

I like the way the banjo dirves it along throughout. I like the lyrics.

The lead vox is bold and strong.

The only points that maybe could be improved are
- a tune that is just a bit limp (in the verse)
- the instrumental section. (from 2'10) Doesn't sound like the sax and gtr are trading, but playing different songs
- just a little too much going on at the end, with a new sound coming in at pretty well every line

But im still mightily impressed!!

Hey thanks for listening and all the comments. I posted a newer mix where I just tried to reduce the time the banjo and fiddle were playing at the same time. Maybe that will help a bit.

jcspro40: Probably right. The vocal lines I got via email were going above 0db so I added some limiting there and overall -- probably squashed it too much.

edbulmer: Yea, I'm pretty much a novice at mixing -- plus I only have headphones right now. Maybe my next purchase (a little bit down the road) will be some nice recording monitors. Unless, of course, I have to spend all my money on new RealTrack offerings!

mglinert: I'm well known for trying to throw the kitchen sink into things. I'll probably try and improve it some more, but for now I have to set it aside. I've lost all objectivity!

I like the song. I agree with the others that it's non-stop strong instrumentally. The secret to making instruments and voices work together is in how you lower the volumes while they're singing. An old DJ trick. Before compressors came along the DJ, while making his commercials, would grab hold of the playback volume control and move it to louder or softer, depending on whether or not he was speaking. During the voice pauses the music would come up loud and strong but when he started speaking he would drage the volume down to about half way, then dance it back up. And that's how you edit volumes on tracks, unless you have a compressor that will do that for you.

I didn't hear the original version , but that was slammin' good to me. The mix seemed fine and Letha's vocal was great. My only quibble was I thought the sax solo may have gone on too long for the flow of the song. Great work Kevin and associates!!!

Real nice tune and performance overall. Only one small nit pick as the arrangement for me at least, was stuck in-between genres (and that may be a good thing that will broaden your audience, I don't know) but to me I thought there was a minor feud going on between the soulful blues styling’s of Leath's vocal, the guitar solo, the fiddle solo and sax Vs. the banjo and acoustic guitar. Maybe just the good tips above i.e. cutting back a bit on some of the backing instruments would solve that minor issue for me.

I am listening (#3) as I type and the better news is that my old ears like it better each time I hear it. Oh yeah, I would love to hear Leath do some Norah Jones or just belt out some up-tempo blues.

Later,

Russell: Now that you mention that, I hear some places where I could have worked the volume a little more. These things always seem clearer AFTER you release the song!

PeteG: The sax is what drew Letha to the the tune -- but yes it might be a little long. Letha does sound great here, thanks for listening and commenting.

Danny: Sometime the cross-genre works and sometimes it just sounds like, well, cross-genre (LOL). It's busy -- there are a total of 15 tracks in there counting the doubling I did here and there. Thanks for stopping by.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
