I'm building a server for the home network. Because of some roles I need covered I plan on using server 2008.

Think I'll have any issues running RB on it? The machine should be capable (phenom triplecore), just wondering about the OS.. is there anything I need to watch out for while setting it up? Any known issues?

Well, if you use it as a regular computer; yes.
If you want to make it act like a server it's a lot more complicated than installing XP or W7.
If you install a simpler OS on it one of those machines it would be much easier.

I have other plans that would take a bit of 'splaining, and thus wondering about 2008 and PGProducts. Running H/W RAID on a recording machine seems like it would be a cool idea. Especially since the machine can hold 8 drives (2 IDE and 6 SATA). Also has 8 USB 2 connections, a couple PCIe and a couple PCI slots, and firewire ... and 2 NIC's. One 10/100 and the other gigabit. Should be able to handle a lot of stuff once set up!

Not for beginners, generally speaking, but the possibilities seem pretty enticing. Due to a lot of it being given to me, I only have a couple hundies into the system; but the processor (and fan), MB and RAM will all be new. The power supply is a couple months old (mine from previous system) and I still gotta get some SATA drives. I see packages out there for RAID in sets. Hopefully end up with a nice system for $400 or so. I got 120 gig IDE drives laying around in plentiful supply. Wondering whether to keep the older (XP) recording system and use this to back up the house and handle other chores (roles), or if this may actually run RB better even though it is a server...

I see tons of low cost servers for sale at geeks.com http://www.geeks.com/products.asp?cat=SVR I have always wondered, can you run a standard OS on a server? If so what is required.

I called on some of these servers, and the problem is that none of them take PCI so I can drop my Delta card in them. I was going to pick up one and start working on it, but i will have to wait.

"Server" refers to the software you are running. There is really no "server computer". In fact, file servers that do nothing more than send files when requested can really run on SLOW computers. It isn't doing any "computing" and doesn't need to be a rocket.

Remember what a server is. Just like in a restaurant, you (the client) request food. Your waiter or waitress (the server) delivers it to you. Simple as that. They don't think, they make no decisions. You request, they deliver. That's all a server is.

I worked for a law firm and the mail server was a Compaq Deskpro. The computers on the desks were much better than the servers, because the computers the lawyers and secretaries used did "computing".

When you load Server 8 you will get prompted to load various modules that make a server a server. Domain Controller, DNS server, DHCP server, etc.... and honestly, you can network your computers together in a pier to pier configuration without running server software. Just come up with a workgroup name, name each computer, put them in the same workgroup, make sure the drives are "shared" with "everybody" access, and you will be able to see every computer from every other.

It sounds daunting until you do it once, but it really is nothing too difficult.

Partially true. A regular computer can act as server, and you can network peer to peer.

But a regular computer is likely not set up with the resources and redundancy you see on a true server system.
Look up server Motherboard (I know you know this already).

I have my 3 computers set up peer to peer wireless. One is XP/SP3 one is Win7x64 and the Internet one is Linux. The printer is also hooked to the Linux box. Works great. Bob's going to school & thus is probably hyped about applying what he's learning.I would be for sure.

I am hyped from school, but even more so on getting this box handed to me, and having access to free software to build it with due to being in that class. We got MSDN accounts as part of the registration!

Dual Xeon processors in your near future, perhaps? <salivating>

I once built a server for a company that had dual Xeons and more RAM than I can remember and it flew. Right after that they went to the IBM Blades and the one I built became a backup, but man those Blades were slick. 8 servers in a pull out rack.... One ran mail, one ran document storage, one ran the internet proxy and authentication.... it was beautiful.

What are you in, MCSE school?

No, keeping current on my web development. Saw the local college offered a course for the CompTIA Server+ certification so I took it. Got an A (3.85 GPA still!) but have not attempted the cert test yet.

I have A+ and Network+ and 4 courses into MCSE. But I am also 60 years old now and see no reason to invest time and money to finish the MCSE just about the time I will stop working.

Great that you are continuing to learn.

I'm mid-40's so I think I have a little room in there yet to cram some more knowledge.

I was suppose to be A+ and Net+ certified to get into the course. I don't have net+, but the instructor knows me well enough that he let me in knowing I could pass. I maintain a network right now for a 103 acre project, mostly wirless towers for WIFI throughout the park, but some wired office stuff too on a separate domain. Plus the integrated park reservation system. We have a couple racks full of 'stuff' in the server room. I could post a pick if your interested.

Love to see it. I'm a nerd through and through.

I remember playing in Sarnia and on the Sunday night of that week I was at a place in Sarnia and somehow met up with 2 girls from a softball team. Later we went across the border to Port Huron and had a BALL at some club there. That was 1987 so I am sure it's gone but man we had a blast that night. I am thinking the name was something like Kennedy's or something close to that.

Here's one

Around that time I think the 'hot' club here in Port Huron was "George's", could be wrong though. That's before I moved back into the area from Chicago. I didn't move back here until '95 or so. I was gone from '80 til '95.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
