Brent Mason (and Vince Gill) - Don't Try This At Home

Since we’ve gotten the Brent Mason real tracks, I thought some of you might want to actually SEE Brent play the guitar. And of of course he’s got a pretty good sideman. … … , Vince Gill.

Shucks, this type of picking actually made John Conley consider getting a cowboy hat!

Yeah Bob! I've seen this before. This is a good listen. Brent sure makes it look effortless. Vince is no slouch either. Thanks.

.. and neither is the pedal steel player.

I notice the bass player is using a 5 string bass. What note is the extra string tuned to? I'm guessing B the same as a regular guitar

Usually the 5th string is a LOW B and then the standard E-A-D-G above it. A high B doesn't serve much purpose because you are above what a guitar can play. Now, that being said, you can do whatever you like. I have played with bass players that use a 4 string string bass with a low B and play B-E-A-D too, so whatever you like to do works fine.

I am using the new 1040XTRAEZ form this year. It has just 2 lines.

1. How much did you make in 2023?
2. Send it to us.

Interesting... thanks Eddie.
An Australian jazz legend, George Golla had a 7 string Maton guitar made for him many years ago. Here's a link to the guitar, and if your interested you can look him up on Wikipdedia. http://www.grouseguitars.com/sold/matongolla7.htm

Keith,

Typically, the 7 sring guitar also has the lowest string tuned to B, like the bass Eddie described.

I've never played one, but I know of one flatpicker that occassionaly uses one, ... Steve Kaufman.

I've always had my hands full with 6 strings.

Everybody in that set is a Bad Mo' Stanky at what they do.

Knowledgeable and practiced at playing quite a few different genres and able to overlap them at will. Love the Roy Bucannon tribute changeoffs, what else would two TeleMasters do? (Well, *anything* they WANT to do, really...)

Fun gig when its like that.

I got your “country” right here from the same concert with Vince and Brent “chicken pickin” all over the place from a gig with guys who Mac aptly called “Bad Mo' Stanky” at what they do:

I would’ve loved to have been at this concert, especially in such a small setting.

Anytime I see anything with Vince it brings back fond memories as he and we often played golf together in Nashville. Not only a fine singer and musician he is a done right great guy. I am proud to say I knew him before "No One Answers".

Edited portion . . . make that "Nobody Answers" When I Call Your Name. If he saw this he'd wanna kick my butt!

Danny,

I have to admit I’m envious of you for having actually played with Vince. He’s one of my favorite guitarists and singers, (not to mention a damn good song writer, … wait, … I just mentioned it!).

I became familiar with Vince after he joined “Pure Prairie League”. It’s interesting to find that Vince initially turned down a spot in the band because he was “playing bluegrass”. This is from the bands website:

Quote:

Someone auditioning for the spot of the departing Gorshorn brothers brought along a young man named Vince Gill. He hadn't intended on trying out for the band, but after jamming for the band, they offered him the job on the spot. "We had seen him play in 1976 when the band he was playing with opened up for us in Oklahoma City", remarks Reilly. "We offered him the gig then, but he said, 'Oh no, I'm playing bluegrass.' Two years later he came to Los Angeles with Byron Berline and Sundance and after we jammed agian for a few hours, we offered him the job again and he accepted".

The rest is musical history. From everything I’ve read and heard about Vince is that he’s genuinely as humble as he appears onstage and in interviews. He still plays with folks from his bluegrass roots and is an all around “multi-instrumentalist” and good guy.

He’s mostly known for his voice and as a “Tele-Master”, but he can make several instruments “talk” like nobodies business!

Bob,

Please note I said I played "golf" with Vince although we may have been involved in a songwriters guitar pull one night while attending a 2-day golf tournament in conjunction with sipping some adult beverages down at Henry Horton State Park. But the truth be spoken when it comes to knowing the six string I am not qualified to carry Gill's guitar picks, period. But in actuality it was Vince's encouragement that pushed me back into singing and playing after nearly a 30-year layoff.

Danny,

OOPS! My bad, As soon as I read “played”, the word “golf” didn’t even register!

But the rest of what you said about Vince encouraging you to play makes up for it!

Sorry for the miscue.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
